Can I get Washington ESD unemployment if I move out of state?
I might have to relocate to Oregon for family reasons but I'm currently receiving unemployment benefits in Washington. My claim has been active for about 6 weeks now and everything's been going smoothly with my weekly claims. But I'm worried about what happens if I move out of state - can I still collect Washington ESD benefits? Do I need to notify them immediately or can I finish out my claim period? I've heard conflicting information and don't want to mess up my benefits.

You can continue receiving Washington ESD benefits even if you move to another state, but there are specific requirements you need to follow. You must remain able and available for work, and you'll still need to complete your job search activities as required by Washington state rules.

•That's a relief! So I don't have to transfer my claim to Oregon or anything like that?

•Correct, you keep your Washington claim. Just make sure you update your address in your eServices account and continue meeting all the eligibility requirements.

•Did you have to tell Washington ESD right away that you moved?

The key thing is you need to notify Washington ESD about your address change promptly. You can do this through your eServices account or by calling them. But good luck getting through on the phone - I've been trying to reach them for days about my own claim issue.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I just discovered it recently and it actually got me through to a Washington ESD agent in like 15 minutes. They have this system that handles all the calling for you - check out claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Does it actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me! Way better than sitting on hold for hours. The agent I talked to was really helpful with my adjudication question.

Wait, I'm confused about the job search requirement if you move out of state. Do you still have to look for jobs in Washington or can you search in your new state?

Lucas Turner
•You can search for work in any state as long as you're genuinely able and available for work. The important thing is documenting your job search activities properly.

•OK that makes sense. I was worried I'd have to keep applying for jobs in Washington even if I moved somewhere else.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS SO CONFUSING!!! Why can't they just have clear information about this stuff on their website? I had to move last month and spent HOURS trying to figure out what I needed to do.

•I feel you on that frustration. The website is pretty hard to navigate sometimes.

•Right?? And then when you try to call them you can never get through. It should not be this difficult.

Just want to add that you should also check if there are any tax implications for receiving Washington unemployment while living in another state. I think it might affect your state tax filing but I'm not 100% sure about that part.

Eleanor Foster
•Oh good point, I hadn't thought about taxes. I'll need to look into that.

Lucas Turner
•Yes, definitely consult a tax professional about that. Washington doesn't have state income tax but your new state might tax the unemployment benefits.

one more thing - make sure you keep getting your mail forwarded or have someone check your old address for any important notices from washington esd. sometimes they send stuff by mail even if you have online access

•Good tip! I'll set up mail forwarding before I move.

Update: I tried that Claimyr thing and it actually worked! Finally got through to someone at Washington ESD about my claim. The agent confirmed everything about out-of-state moves that people mentioned here. Definitely worth trying if you need to talk to them directly.

•How much does Claimyr cost? I've been trying to reach ESD for weeks.

•Honestly I was just happy to finally talk to a real person. Way better than the endless busy signals and dropped calls.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! Sounds like I should be fine as long as I update my address and keep meeting all the requirements. Really appreciate the advice about Claimyr too - might need that if I run into any issues.

•You're welcome! Good luck with your move. Just stay on top of your weekly claims and you should be fine.

I moved from Washington to Texas while on unemployment and it was actually pretty smooth. The main thing is just being honest with ESD about your situation and making sure you're still actively looking for work.

Eleanor Foster
•That's reassuring to hear from someone who's actually done it. Did you have any issues with your weekly certifications?

Molly Chambers
•Nope, just kept filing them online like normal. Updated my address and everything went fine.

Wait can someone clarify - do you have to be physically available to work in Washington state or just available to work in general? This is confusing me.

Lucas Turner
•You need to be able and available for work in general, not specifically in Washington. As long as you're genuinely seeking employment and able to accept suitable work, you meet the requirement.

Ian Armstrong
•OK that makes way more sense. Thanks for clarifying!

Does anyone know if there's a time limit on how long you can be out of state while collecting Washington unemployment? Like do you have to come back at some point?
0 coins
Lucas Turner
•There's no specific time limit as long as you continue to meet all eligibility requirements. Your claim duration is based on your benefit year, not your location.

•Good to know, thanks!

Pro tip: screenshot or save all your online conversations and confirmations about the address change. I learned the hard way to document everything with Washington ESD just in case there are any questions later.

•Great advice! I'll definitely keep records of everything.

This thread is super helpful! I'm potentially facing a similar situation and was really worried about losing my benefits. Glad to know it's possible to keep collecting even after moving.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr recommendation - I used it again this week for a different question and it's consistently worked well for getting through to Washington ESD. Really saves time compared to the regular phone system.

•I'm definitely going to check that out. I've wasted so many hours trying to call ESD directly.

One thing to watch out for - make sure your job search activities are legitimate and in fields where you could realistically work. Don't just apply to random jobs in your new state if they don't match your background.

Eleanor Foster
•That's a good point. I'll make sure to focus on positions that actually match my experience and qualifications.

I'm curious - has anyone had issues with their new state's unemployment office getting confused about Washington benefits? Like do you need to tell Oregon that you're not applying for benefits there?
0 coins
Lucas Turner
•You typically don't need to notify your new state's unemployment office unless you're applying for benefits there too, which you can't do while receiving Washington benefits.

Alice Coleman
•Makes sense. Thanks for the clarification!

This whole process seems way more complicated than it needs to be. Why can't they just have a simple form that says 'I'm moving but want to keep my benefits' instead of making us figure it out ourselves?
0 coins
Kaylee Cook
•EXACTLY! The whole system is unnecessarily complex. Should be much more straightforward.

Lilah Brooks
•I mean, it's government bureaucracy - when is it ever simple? At least there are resources like Claimyr now to help navigate it.

Final thought from someone who's been through this process - just be proactive about communication with Washington ESD. Update your info early, keep good records, and don't wait until there's a problem to reach out. It's much easier to prevent issues than fix them later.

•Perfect advice! I'll definitely be proactive about everything. Thanks again everyone for all the help!
