Can you collect unemployment if you move to a different state - Washington ESD rules?
I'm currently receiving unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and my spouse just got a job offer in Oregon. We're planning to move there in about 3 weeks. I still have several weeks left on my claim and I'm wondering if I can continue collecting Washington unemployment benefits after I relocate to Oregon? Do I need to notify Washington ESD about the move? Will this affect my weekly claims or job search requirements? I'm really worried about losing my benefits right when we're dealing with moving expenses.

Yes, you can generally continue receiving Washington ESD benefits even if you move to another state. The key is that you need to remain able and available for work, and you'll still need to meet Washington's job search requirements. You should definitely notify Washington ESD about your address change through your online account.

•Thank you! Do I need to keep looking for work in Washington or can I search for jobs in Oregon where I'll be living?

•You can search for work in your new location, but make sure you document your job search activities properly in your weekly claims. The important thing is that you're actively seeking work.

I moved from Washington to California last year while on unemployment and had no issues continuing my claim. Just make sure you update your address and keep filing your weekly claims on time.

•That's reassuring to hear! Did you have to do anything special or just update your address?

•Just updated my address through the secure portal. Everything else stayed the same.

Make sure you're familiar with the Interstate Benefit Payment Plan. This allows you to collect unemployment from your original state while residing in another state. Washington participates in this program, so you should be fine as long as you follow the proper procedures.

•I haven't heard of that before. Is there anything specific I need to do to participate in that program?

•Usually it's automatic if you properly notify Washington ESD of your move. The key is maintaining contact with Washington ESD and following their requirements, not Oregon's.

I had trouble reaching Washington ESD when I needed to update my information for a similar situation. Spent hours on the phone trying to get through. If you run into that issue, I recently discovered Claimyr at claimyr.com - they help you get connected to ESD agents without all the waiting and busy signals. There's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Thanks for the tip! I've been dreading having to call ESD. How does that service work exactly?

•It basically monitors the phone lines and calls you back when an agent becomes available, so you don't have to sit on hold forever or keep redialing busy numbers.

•That sounds too good to be true. What's the catch?

•No catch really, just saves you time and frustration. I used it to sort out a similar address change issue and it worked great.

Wait, I'm confused. If you move to Oregon don't you have to file for Oregon unemployment instead? I thought each state has their own system.

•No, you continue with the state where you originally filed your claim and earned your wages. Moving doesn't automatically transfer your claim to a new state.

•Oh that makes sense. So it depends on where you worked, not where you live.

Just be careful about the job search requirements. Some people think moving gives them an excuse to not look for work actively, but Washington ESD still expects you to be genuinely seeking employment.

•Good point. I definitely plan to keep looking for work once we get settled in Oregon.

•Perfect. Document everything in your weekly claims and you should be fine.

I moved to Texas while collecting Washington unemployment and it was seamless. The main thing is keeping up with your weekly certifications and making sure Washington ESD can reach you at your new address.

Oliver Fischer
•Did you have to provide any proof of your move or job search in the new state?

Freya Andersen
•Not initially, but I kept records just in case. Washington ESD may ask for job search documentation during random audits.

One thing to watch out for - make sure your move isn't considered 'voluntary' in a way that affects your eligibility. If you're moving for family reasons like your spouse's job, that's usually fine, but document the reason just in case.

•Should I mention in my weekly claim that I'm moving because of my spouse's job opportunity?

•It wouldn't hurt to note that if there's a section for comments or if they ask about changes in your circumstances.

This whole interstate thing is so confusing. Why can't they just make it simple? Every state should have the same rules IMO.

•Each state funds their own unemployment system, so they get to set their own rules. The Interstate Benefit Payment Plan helps coordinate between states, but it's not perfect.

•Still unnecessarily complicated for people who are already stressed about finding work.

Make sure you change your address BEFORE you move, not after. I learned this the hard way when important documents got sent to my old address.

•Good tip! I'll update it as soon as we have our new address confirmed.

•Also set up mail forwarding with USPS just to be safe.

Does anyone know if there are time limits on how long you can collect from one state while living in another? Or can you do it for the whole benefit period?
0 coins
Emma Davis
•You can continue for your entire benefit period as long as you remain eligible. The Interstate Benefit Payment Plan doesn't impose additional time limits.

•Thanks! That's what I was hoping to hear.

I moved from Washington to Nevada and continued my benefits with no problems. The only annoying part was updating all my job search contacts to reflect the new location, but Washington ESD was fine with it.

Oliver Fischer
•Did you have to explain why you were looking for work in Nevada instead of Washington?

Diego Mendoza
•Not really. I just put my new location in the job search log and they accepted it.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier - I actually used it again last week to get through to ESD about a different issue and it worked perfectly. Saved me probably 2+ hours of phone tag. Definitely worth checking out if you have trouble reaching them about your move.

•I'm definitely going to try that. I've been trying to reach ESD for weeks about my own issue.

•Yeah, the traditional phone system is basically broken. This actually gets you through to a real person.

Be prepared for some paperwork potentially. When I moved states, Washington ESD sent me some forms to verify my new address and confirm I was still eligible.

Oliver Fischer
•What kind of forms? Was it complicated?

Sean Flanagan
•Nothing too bad, just confirming address change and that I was still able and available for work. Took maybe 10 minutes to fill out.

The most important thing is don't let any weekly claims lapse during your move. Even if you're busy with moving logistics, make sure you file on time every week.

Oliver Fischer
•Good reminder! I'll set phone alerts to make sure I don't miss any deadlines.

•Smart. Missing even one week can create headaches you don't want to deal with while you're settling into a new state.

One last thing - if Oregon unemployment benefits are better than Washington's, you might want to look into whether you can switch over at some point. But that's a more complicated process.
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
•I hadn't thought about that. I'll look into Oregon's system once I'm settled there.
0 coins
Emma Davis
•Generally you can't switch mid-claim unless you have new qualifying wages in the new state. Better to stick with Washington for now.

Luca Ferrari
•Good point. Probably not worth the hassle unless there's a significant difference.

Final update from my end - I contacted Washington ESD today using that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got everything sorted out for my move. The agent confirmed I can continue my benefits in Oregon and walked me through exactly what I need to do. Thanks everyone for the advice!

This is exactly the information I needed! I'm planning to move from Washington to Colorado next month while still on unemployment and was worried about the process. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly reassuring. It sounds like as long as I update my address promptly and keep up with my weekly claims, I should be fine. I'm definitely going to check out that Claimyr service too since I've had terrible luck trying to reach ESD by phone in the past. Thanks to everyone who shared their stories - it really helps to hear from people who've actually been through this!
