Washington ESD unemployment if you move to another state - need help
I'm currently collecting unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and my spouse got a job offer in Oregon. If we move there next month, can I still keep getting my Washington unemployment payments? I've been getting benefits for about 6 weeks now and still have money left on my claim. I tried calling Washington ESD but couldn't get through to anyone. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? I'm worried about losing my benefits right when we're trying to relocate.

Yes, you can move to another state and still collect Washington ESD benefits as long as you follow the rules. You need to report your address change immediately through your online account and continue filing your weekly claims. The key is staying available for work and continuing your job search - you'll need to look for work in your new state.

•That's a relief! Do I need to register with Oregon's job center or can I keep using WorkSource Washington for my job search requirements?

•You'll need to register with Oregon's job center system since that's where you'll be looking for work. Washington ESD will accept job search activities from other states as long as you document them properly.

I moved from Washington to California last year while on unemployment and it was fine. Just make sure you update your address in your SecureAccess Washington account right away. I think there's a form you have to fill out too.

•Did you have any problems with your weekly claims or did everything process normally after you moved?

•Everything went smooth once I updated my info. Just kept filing every week like normal.

You definitely need to notify Washington ESD about the move, but honestly good luck getting through to them on the phone. I've been trying to reach them for weeks about a different issue and keep getting disconnected. There's actually a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps people get through to ESD agents - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to talk to someone directly about the move.

•Never heard of that service before. Is it legit? I'm getting desperate trying to reach someone at Washington ESD.

StarStrider
•Yeah it's legitimate. They basically help you get through the phone queues instead of sitting there hitting redial for hours. Way better than the frustration of trying to call on your own.

Wait, I thought you had to stay in Washington to keep getting benefits? This is confusing. I've been afraid to even take a vacation because I thought it would mess up my claim.

Anastasia Ivanova
•No, you can travel and even move permanently as long as you remain available for work and continue your job search. Vacation is fine too as long as you report it if it affects your availability.

•Oh wow, I had no idea. I've been turning down family visits because I was scared it would affect my benefits.

The interstate thing can get tricky though. Make sure Oregon doesn't try to tell you that you need to file a new claim with them instead. Some states are weird about this stuff and you might end up in a bureaucratic mess between the two systems.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about. How do I make sure Oregon doesn't interfere with my Washington claim?

Anastasia Ivanova
•Oregon won't interfere as long as you don't try to file a new claim there. Just register for job search services, not unemployment benefits. Keep your Washington claim active and don't let anyone tell you to file in Oregon.

I moved to Texas while collecting Washington unemployment and had zero issues. The main thing is keeping up with your weekly claims and job search. Texas workforce people were actually helpful in explaining that I should keep my Washington claim.

•How long ago was this? I'm hoping the rules haven't changed recently.

•This was about 8 months ago, so pretty recent. Rules should be the same.

ugh the phone system at Washington ESD is absolutely broken. I've been trying to get through for three weeks about my adjudication and keep getting hung up on after waiting for hours. It's ridiculous that we have to jump through hoops just to talk to someone about our own benefits.

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. I was in the same boat until someone told me about them. Actually got through to an ESD agent the same day I tried it.

•I might have to try that. This is getting absurd.

Just want to add that you should document everything when you move. Keep records of when you notified ESD about the address change, your new job search activities, etc. If there are any questions later you'll have proof that you followed all the rules.

Diego Flores
•Good point. Should I send the address change notification through secure messaging or just update it online?

Aisha Rahman
•I'd do both - update online and send a secure message so you have a record that you notified them directly.

One thing to watch out for is the job search requirements might be different in Oregon. Washington requires 3 job search activities per week, but other states have different rules. Make sure you understand what Oregon requires for job seekers.

•Will Washington ESD accept whatever Oregon requires, or do I still need to meet Washington's requirements?
0 coins
Anastasia Ivanova
•You still need to meet Washington's requirements since that's where your claim is. But you can do those activities in Oregon - apply to Oregon jobs, attend Oregon job fairs, etc.

I'm dealing with something similar but moving to Idaho. Been trying to get clarification from Washington ESD for weeks but their phone system is a nightmare. Might have to try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned.

•Definitely worth trying. The video demo I linked earlier shows exactly how it works and it's pretty straightforward.

•Just watched the demo. This looks like it could actually work. Thanks for sharing!

Make sure you're not working in Oregon before your move date or that could complicate things. If you start a job there, you need to report it properly and it might affect your benefits timing.

•My spouse is the one with the job offer, not me. I'll still be unemployed and looking for work after we move.

Ethan Brown
•That should be fine then. Just be clear about your own employment status when you file your weekly claims.

Does anyone know if there are any states that have special agreements with Washington that make this easier? I heard some states have reciprocal agreements or something.

Anastasia Ivanova
•There are some interstate agreements for certain things, but for regular unemployment benefits, the process is pretty much the same regardless of which state you move to.

Yuki Yamamoto
•Thanks, I wasn't sure if some states made it more complicated than others.

The timing of when you update your address might matter too. I'd probably wait until after you've actually moved rather than updating it early, just to avoid any confusion with your weekly claims.
0 coins
Diego Flores
•That makes sense. I don't want to create problems by updating too early.
0 coins
Anastasia Ivanova
•Yeah, update it right after you move but don't wait too long. They want current information.

Quick question - if you move to another state, can you still use direct deposit or do you have to switch to a different payment method?
0 coins
Sean Murphy
•Direct deposit should work fine as long as your bank account is still active. Moving doesn't affect that part.

•Good to know, thanks!

I moved from Washington to Nevada while on unemployment and the only hassle was getting registered with Nevada's job service. Once that was done, everything else stayed the same with my Washington claim.

Diego Flores
•How long did it take to get registered with Nevada's system?

Zoe Papadakis
•Maybe a week or two. Wasn't too bad, just had to do it online and wait for them to process it.

This thread is super helpful! I was stressing about potentially having to move for family reasons while on unemployment. Sounds like it's more manageable than I thought.

Anastasia Ivanova
•It really is manageable as long as you follow the rules and keep good records. The key is communication with Washington ESD.

One more tip - if you're driving to your new state, keep receipts for your moving expenses. Some of those might be deductible when you file taxes, especially if you're moving for job search purposes.

Diego Flores
•I hadn't thought about the tax implications. Good point!

AstroAdventurer
•Yeah, there are some tax benefits for job search related moves. Worth looking into.

Just to recap for anyone else reading this - you CAN move to another state while collecting Washington unemployment, just update your address, register for job search in your new state, and keep filing your weekly claims. Don't let anyone tell you that you need to file a new claim in your new state.

Diego Flores
•Perfect summary! This gives me confidence about our move next month.

Last thing - if you run into any issues after you move and need to talk to Washington ESD, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier might be your best bet. The regular phone lines are basically useless at this point.

StarStrider
•Exactly. I've recommended it to several people now and everyone who's tried it has had success getting through to ESD.

•I bookmarked their site just in case I need it after we move. Thanks everyone for all the help!

This whole thread should be pinned somewhere. So much good info about interstate unemployment benefits that I couldn't find anywhere else online.
