Washington ESD unemployment claim if I move to another state - will I lose benefits?
I'm currently receiving unemployment benefits through Washington ESD but I'm considering moving to Oregon to be closer to family. I've been on benefits for about 8 weeks now and still have time left on my claim. Will I lose my Washington unemployment if I move to another state? I'm really worried about this because I can't afford to lose my benefits right now. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? Do I need to notify Washington ESD if I move? I've been searching for jobs in both states but haven't found anything yet.

You can continue receiving Washington ESD benefits even if you move to another state, but there are some important things you need to do. You MUST notify Washington ESD immediately when you move and update your address in your SecureAccess Washington account. You'll still need to file your weekly claims and meet all the job search requirements.

•Thank you! That's a relief. Do I need to tell them before I move or is it okay to update after I get there?

•You should notify them as soon as possible, but definitely within a week of moving. Don't wait too long because any delays in communication could cause issues with your claim.

Just keep in mind that you'll still need to follow Washington's job search requirements even if you're living in Oregon. That means 3 job contacts per week and keeping your job search log updated. Some people think moving means different rules but it doesn't work that way.

•Can I count job applications in Oregon toward my Washington job search requirement?

•Yes, absolutely! Job search activities in any state count toward your Washington requirement. Just make sure you're documenting everything properly.

I went through this exact situation last year when I moved from Washington to California. The key thing is staying on top of your weekly claims and keeping Washington ESD informed. I had trouble reaching them by phone at first to report my move - kept getting disconnected after waiting forever. Finally found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Made the whole process so much easier.

•How long did it take to update everything with Washington ESD after you moved?

•Once I actually got through to someone, it only took about 10 minutes to update my address and confirm I understood the requirements. The hard part was just getting connected to an agent.

Wait, I'm confused about this. I thought unemployment was state-specific? If you move to Oregon, wouldn't you need to apply for Oregon unemployment instead?

Malik Jackson
•No, that's a common misconception. Your unemployment claim stays with the state where you earned your wages and filed your original claim. You can't just switch to another state's program.

•Oh wow, I had no idea! Thanks for clarifying that.

Make sure you understand the implications for your job search too. While you can search for jobs anywhere, Washington ESD may have specific requirements about being available for work. If you move too far away, you need to be prepared to explain how you're still available for Washington jobs if they ask.

•That's something I hadn't thought about. Oregon isn't that far from Washington though, so I should be okay with availability, right?

•Oregon should be fine since it's neighboring and you could reasonably commute to some Washington jobs. Just be honest about your location and availability when you file your weekly claims.

ugh this system is so confusing! why can't they just make it simple and let you transfer benefits between states?? I've been trying to figure out unemployment rules for weeks and it feels like every answer leads to more questions

•I know it's frustrating, but the system actually makes sense once you understand it. Each state has different benefit amounts and rules, so you can't just transfer. You stick with the state where you worked.

•I guess that makes sense but it's still a pain to navigate

One thing to watch out for - make sure your mail forwarding is set up properly. I missed some important correspondence from Washington ESD when I moved and it caused a temporary hold on my benefits. Had to provide additional documentation to prove I was still eligible.

•Good point! I'll make sure to set up mail forwarding before I move. What kind of documentation did they need?

•They wanted proof of my new address and confirmation that I was still actively looking for work. Wasn't too bad but delayed my payments for a couple weeks.

Just a heads up - some employers might ask about your location during interviews. Be prepared to explain that you're willing to relocate back to Washington if you get a job offer there. Shows you're serious about finding work.

•That's good advice. I am definitely willing to move back for the right opportunity.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months and honestly their phone system is terrible. Half the time I can't get through to ask simple questions like this. Really wish they had better customer service.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - saved me so much frustration trying to get through on my own. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get things sorted out.

•Never heard of that service, but anything that helps get through to Washington ESD sounds good to me

Quick question - does moving affect your benefit amount at all? Like if Oregon has higher cost of living, do they adjust your Washington benefits?

Malik Jackson
•No, your benefit amount stays the same. It's based on your Washington wages and doesn't change based on where you live while collecting.

•Makes sense, thanks!

Don't forget to update your voter registration and driver's license too when you move. Not directly related to unemployment but you'll want to get all that sorted out.

•Good reminder! I'll add that to my moving checklist.

I moved from Washington to Arizona last year while on unemployment and it was pretty straightforward once I figured out the process. The key is just staying compliant with all the requirements and keeping Washington ESD informed.

•Just be extra careful about filing your weekly claims on time. Moving can be hectic and it's easy to forget, but missing a claim can cause big problems.

This is really helpful information! I'm in a similar situation but considering moving to Idaho. Sounds like the same rules would apply?

Malik Jackson
•Yes, same rules for any state. You continue with your Washington claim regardless of where you move to.

The job search requirement is the part that trips people up most. Make sure you're documenting everything properly because they do audit these things. Keep detailed records of all your applications and contacts.

•I've been keeping a spreadsheet with all my job search activities. Should I be doing anything else to document properly?

•That sounds good. Just make sure you're including dates, company names, positions applied for, and method of contact. Washington ESD provides a job search log form you can use too.

One more thing - if you're moving for family reasons, that's totally fine and won't affect your eligibility. Just make sure you're still available and actively seeking work.

•Perfect, that's exactly my situation. Family support will actually help me focus more on job searching.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this same question last month and gave up after 2 hours on hold. Ended up finding most of my answers online but it would have been nice to talk to someone. Maybe I should try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier.

•Definitely worth trying! I was skeptical at first but it really does work. Much better than sitting on hold for hours.

Just want to echo what others have said - keep Washington ESD updated on your address and you should be fine. The system is designed to handle people moving around, especially in today's job market.
