Can you get PFL and unemployment benefits at the same time in Washington?
I'm currently on paid family leave through Washington State for taking care of my newborn, but my employer just laid me off while I was on leave. Can I collect both PFL and unemployment benefits simultaneously? I'm getting conflicting information online and Washington ESD's website isn't super clear about this situation. Has anyone been in this position before?

You typically can't collect both at the same time since they're both wage replacement programs. If you're receiving PFL payments, you're not considered available for work which is a requirement for UI benefits.

Actually had this exact situation last year. You have to choose one or the other - can't double dip. I finished my PFL first then applied for unemployment since I was laid off during leave. Washington ESD approved my UI claim but it took about 3 weeks to process.

The key issue is the 'able and available' requirement for unemployment. While on PFL, you're not available for work since you're caring for family. Once your PFL period ends, then you could potentially qualify for UI if you meet all other requirements including the job separation reason.

From what I understand, both programs are administered by Washington ESD but you can only receive one type of benefit at a time. The timing of when you apply for UI after PFL ends is important too.

Just went through this process 2 months ago. You definitely cannot collect both simultaneously. I had to wait until my 12 weeks of PFL was completely finished before I could even apply for unemployment. Make sure you keep all your paperwork from both programs.
