Can you collect unemployment if you worked less than 90 days in Washington ESD?
I started a new job in November but got laid off after only 78 days due to budget cuts. My previous job ended in August. Can I still file for Washington ESD unemployment benefits even though I didn't work the full 90 days at this last position? I'm confused about the base period requirements and whether short-term employment counts toward my claim. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Yes, you can definitely file! Washington ESD doesn't have a 90-day minimum work requirement. They look at your base period earnings, which is typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. Your 78 days of work will count toward your total base period wages.

•That's a relief! So even though the recent job was short, it still adds to my base period calculation?

Adaline Wong
•Exactly. Every day you worked and earned wages during your base period counts toward determining your benefit amount.

I had the same worry when I got let go after 65 days. Filed anyway and got approved. The key is having enough total earnings in your base period, not how long you worked at each individual job.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved? I'm worried about the adjudication process.

Gabriel Ruiz
•Mine took about 2 weeks, but that was pretty typical timing. No adjudication issues since it was a straightforward layoff.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your eligibility, I used Claimyr recently and it was a game changer. They helped me get through to an actual agent who could look at my specific situation. Check out their site at claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that service. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after weeks of busy signals. Got connected to an agent within an hour.

•Might try this if I run into issues with my claim. Thanks for sharing!

The important thing to understand is that Washington ESD uses your highest earning quarter in the base period to calculate your weekly benefit amount. So even if your recent job was short, if you had good earnings from your previous job in August, that will help your benefit calculation.

•My August job paid really well, so that's encouraging. I should probably file sooner rather than later?

•Yes, file as soon as possible. You can't collect benefits for weeks before you file, so there's no advantage to waiting.

ugh the whole base period thing is so confusing... like why can't they just make it simple and say you need X amount of work days instead of all these quarters and calculations

•I know it seems complicated, but the base period system actually helps more people qualify since it looks at your earnings over a longer timeframe.

•i guess that makes sense but still wish there was an easier way to figure out if you qualify before going through the whole application

Wait, I'm confused. I thought you had to work for at least 6 months to get unemployment? My friend told me there was a minimum time requirement.

Vince Eh
•That's a common misconception. There's no minimum time requirement, just minimum earnings requirements during your base period.

•Oh wow, I've been putting off filing because I thought I didn't qualify. I only worked 4 months at my last job.

•You should definitely file! The worst thing that can happen is they deny your claim, but you might be surprised and qualify.

Update: I filed my claim this morning online. The system walked me through entering all my employers from the base period. It was actually pretty straightforward once I got started.

•Good for you! Make sure to file your weekly claims on time once you start receiving them.

•Will do. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly with the review process.

This thread is helpful. I'm in a similar boat - worked 82 days before getting laid off due to company restructuring. Going to file my claim today.

For anyone still worried about this, I've seen people qualify with as little as 3 months of work, as long as they had sufficient earnings in their base period. The key is total wages earned, not length of employment at any single job.

Tobias Lancaster
•That's really encouraging. I had two part-time jobs for about 3 months each, so hopefully the combined earnings will be enough.

•Multiple jobs definitely help! Washington ESD counts wages from all employers during your base period.

Just wanted to add that even if you don't initially qualify under the standard base period, Washington ESD can use an alternate base period which might include more recent earnings. So don't give up if your first application gets denied.

•I didn't know about the alternate base period option. Good to know there's a backup if needed.

•Yeah, it's not widely advertised but it can make the difference for people with recent job changes.

Quick follow-up on Claimyr - I mentioned it earlier but wanted to add that it's especially helpful if you need to discuss complex situations like multiple jobs or short employment periods. Sometimes you really need to talk to a human to get clarity on your specific case.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•I'd rather not discuss pricing here, but they're upfront about costs on their website. For me, it was worth it to get my questions answered quickly rather than spending weeks trying to reach Washington ESD directly.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for THREE WEEKS about my claim and keep getting hung up on. This is ridiculous - people need these benefits to survive!

•I feel your frustration. The phone system is definitely overwhelmed. Have you tried calling right at 8am when they open?

Reginald Blackwell
•YES! I've tried everything - calling at 8am, during lunch, late afternoon. Nothing works.

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. The regular phone system is basically unusable right now.

same thing happened to my cousin last year - worked like 2 months and still got unemployment. the 90 day thing is totally made up, dont know where people get that from

•It seems like there are a lot of myths floating around about unemployment eligibility. Glad to get the real information here.

•yeah people just repeat stuff they heard without actually checking. always better to just file and see what happens

Pro tip: when you file your claim, make sure you have all your employment information handy including exact start and end dates, employer addresses, and reason for separation. It makes the process much smoother.

•Thanks for the tip! I gathered all that info before filing and you're right, it made things much easier.

•Wish I had seen this earlier - had to log out and gather paperwork halfway through my application.

Just to clarify for anyone reading this - the minimum earnings requirement in Washington is typically around $3,200 in your highest quarter and at least 680 hours of work or $5,000 total in your base period. The specific job length doesn't matter.
0 coins
Tobias Lancaster
•Those numbers are really helpful. I think I should qualify based on my previous job earnings.

•You can also check your quarterly earnings on the Washington ESD website to get an idea of where you stand before filing.

Final reminder for everyone - make sure to continue filing your weekly claims even if your initial claim is under review or in adjudication. You can't go back and claim those weeks later if you don't file them on time.
0 coins
Tate Jensen
•That's really important to know. I'll make sure to stay on top of the weekly claims once my claim is processed.

•Good point. I almost made that mistake with my last claim a few years ago.

For anyone still unsure, I'd recommend calling Washington ESD directly to discuss your specific situation. Yes, it's hard to get through, but talking to an actual person can give you peace of mind about your eligibility.

•Easy to say but impossible to actually do! The phone system is completely broken.
