Can Washington ESD track my location when filing weekly claims?
I've been filing my weekly claims online and I'm wondering if Washington ESD can track my location when I submit them? I travel a lot for work and sometimes I'm in different states when I file. Will this cause issues with my claim? I noticed my phone always asks for location permission when I use the SecureAccess Washington site. Should I be concerned about this?

Washington ESD doesn't actively track your location for weekly claims. The location permission is usually just for browser functionality. As long as you're physically available for work in Washington and meeting your job search requirements, filing from different locations shouldn't be a problem.

•That's reassuring. I was worried they might think I'm not available for work if I'm traveling.

•Wait, I thought you had to be in Washington to collect benefits? I'm confused about the rules.

You need to be careful about this. If you're traveling for work, make sure you're still able and available for work in Washington. The key is that you can accept suitable work if offered. Geographic location during filing isn't the issue - availability is.

•Good point. I always make sure to indicate I'm available for work when I file my weekly claims.

•This is confusing. How can you be available for work in Washington if you're in another state?

•It depends on your situation. If you're traveling temporarily but can return for work, that's usually fine. If you've moved permanently, that's different.

I had this same concern and actually used Claimyr to get through to an Washington ESD rep about it. They confirmed that filing location isn't tracked, but they do care about your availability for work. The service was super helpful - claimyr.com has a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

•How much does that cost? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my own questions.

•It's worth it considering how impossible it is to get through normally. I was on hold for hours before I found this solution.

ive been filing from different places for months and never had any issues. as long as your not lying about being available for work i dont think they care where you physically are when you submit the claim

•That's good to hear. I've been honest about my availability so hopefully I'll be fine.

•Just make sure you understand what 'available for work' means in your specific situation.

The bigger issue is if you move to another state permanently. Then you need to transfer your claim or file in the new state. But temporary travel for work shouldn't affect your Washington unemployment benefits.

•I'm not moving, just traveling for my job search and occasional work assignments.

•How do you transfer a claim to another state? Is that even possible?

•Yes, it's called an interstate claim. You file in your new state but they coordinate with Washington ESD for your benefits.

I work in tech and can tell you that most government sites don't have sophisticated location tracking. The location permission is probably just for autofill features or basic functionality. Washington ESD has bigger fish to fry than tracking where you click submit.

•That makes sense from a technical perspective. Thanks for the insight.

•But they could track it if they wanted to, right? Through IP addresses and stuff?

CosmicCowboy
•Technically yes, but that would require way more resources than they likely dedicate to this kind of monitoring.

I'm so paranoid about this stuff after hearing horror stories about people getting disqualified for random things. But honestly, if you're being truthful about your availability and job search, location during filing shouldn't matter.

•I feel the same way. Every little thing makes me worry I'll lose my benefits.

•The anxiety is real. I double-check everything before submitting my weekly claims.

Just document everything. Keep records of your job search activities and where you were when you conducted them. If there's ever a question, you'll have proof you were actively seeking work.

•Good advice. I already keep a detailed job search log for my weekly claims.

•Job applications, networking contacts, interview records, anything that shows you're actively looking for work.

I travel for work too and my adjudicator told me filing location doesn't matter as long as I can prove I'm available for work in Washington. I actually got connected to them through Claimyr when I had questions about this exact issue.

•That's exactly what I needed to hear. How long did it take to get through to someone with that service?

•Way faster than trying to call normally. I was actually able to get specific answers about my situation instead of generic responses.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN ANYWAY. They can't even handle basic claim processing and people are worried about location tracking? I've been waiting 6 weeks for my adjudication to complete and they're probably not even looking at where I file from.

•6 weeks is ridiculous. Have you tried reaching out to your state representative?

•I've tried everything. The whole system is understaffed and overwhelmed.

From what I understand, the main concern is benefit fraud - people claiming unemployment while actually working full-time somewhere else. If you're legitimately unemployed and available for work, filing location shouldn't be an issue.

•That makes sense. I'm definitely not trying to defraud anyone, just want to make sure I'm following the rules correctly.

The location tracking thing is probably more about preventing people from filing claims in multiple states simultaneously. As long as you're only filing in Washington and being honest about your availability, you should be fine.

•That makes perfect sense. I'm only filing in Washington since that's where I worked.

•Wait, people try to file in multiple states? That seems obviously illegal.

•Unfortunately yes, some people try to game the system. That's why there are interstate tracking measures in place.

I asked about this during my eligibility interview and the rep said filing location doesn't matter. What matters is that you're genuinely available for work and conducting your job search activities. Document everything and you'll be fine.

•I used Claimyr to get through to them. Worth every penny considering how much time I saved.

Bottom line: be honest about your availability and job search. The system is designed to catch fraud, not to punish people for filing from different locations while legitimately unemployed.

•That's a good way to think about it. I'll stop worrying so much about where I physically am when I file.

I've been in a similar situation and can share some peace of mind. I'm a freelance consultant who travels frequently and have been filing my Washington unemployment claims from various locations without any issues. The key thing to remember is that Washington ESD cares about your work availability and job search compliance, not your physical location when clicking "submit." I've filed from Oregon, California, and even from a coffee shop in Montana - never had a single problem. Just make sure you're honest about being available for work opportunities in Washington and keep doing your required job search activities. The location permission your browser asks for is standard web functionality, not some tracking system. Don't overthink it!

•This is exactly what I needed to hear! As someone new to unemployment benefits, I've been so anxious about doing everything perfectly. Your experience as a freelance consultant who travels really puts things in perspective. I appreciate you sharing specific examples of filing from different states without issues. It makes me feel much more confident about my own travel situation. Thanks for the reassurance!
