How does Washington ESD know if you leave country while on unemployment?
I need to visit family overseas for about 3 weeks but I'm currently receiving unemployment benefits from Washington ESD. I've been filing my weekly claims religiously and doing my job searches through WorkSourceWA. My question is - how would Washington ESD even know if I left the country? Do they track passport records or something? I'm worried about getting disqualified but this is a family emergency situation. Has anyone dealt with this before?

You're required to be available for work and actively seeking employment to receive UI benefits. Leaving the country makes you unavailable for work, which is a disqualification. You need to report this travel when filing your weekly claims - there's a specific question about being available for work.

•But what if I just don't mention it? How would they actually find out?

•That would be fraud. They can cross-reference data from multiple sources including customs records. Not worth the risk of having to pay back benefits plus penalties.

they definitely can find out through passport records and stuff like that. my cousin got caught doing this exact thing and had to pay back like $4000 in benefits

•Seriously? That's terrifying. How long after did they find out?

•took about 6 months but then they hit him with the overpayment notice. he tried to fight it but lost the appeal

If you need to travel for a family emergency, you should contact Washington ESD directly to discuss your options. Sometimes they can put your claim on hold without disqualification depending on the circumstances. Don't just stop filing - that creates other problems.

•How do I get through to them though? I've been trying to call for days and can't get past the busy signal.

•Yeah the phone lines are brutal. You might want to try using a service like Claimyr - they can get you connected to an actual Washington ESD agent. Check out claimyr.com, they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

WAIT - I need to know more about this Claimyr thing. I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my adjudication issue. Does it actually work?

•It worked for me when I had a standby issue that needed clarification. Saved me hours of calling and getting disconnected.

•Sounds too good to be true honestly. How much does it cost?

•They focus on just getting you connected, not expensive at all compared to the time you'd waste calling yourself.

The system tracks everything these days. When you swipe your passport at customs, that data gets shared with government agencies. Washington ESD has access to determine if you were available for work during your claim periods.

•This is so stressful. I really need to see my sick grandmother but I can't afford to lose my benefits.

•That's exactly the type of situation you should discuss with Washington ESD. Family emergencies sometimes qualify for exceptions.

ugh the government surveillance state is real. they know everything about us now

•This isn't surveillance, it's preventing fraud. UI benefits are for people actively looking for work in Washington state.

I had to travel for a funeral last year while on unemployment. I called Washington ESD beforehand and they put my claim on inactive status for two weeks. When I got back, I reactivated it with no issues. Just be honest with them.

•That gives me hope! How did you manage to get through to them on the phone?

•I actually used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Got connected within like 30 minutes instead of spending all day calling.

Just want to add that even if you're out of the country, you might still be required to do your job search activities through WorkSourceWA to maintain eligibility when you return. Make sure you understand all the requirements.

•How can I do job searches if I'm not even in the country? That seems impossible.

Oliver Brown
•That's exactly why travel affects your eligibility. You can't reasonably conduct a job search or be available for interviews while abroad.

Don't risk it. I know someone who thought they were being clever and didn't report international travel. Washington ESD flagged them during a random audit and they had to repay 6 months of benefits plus interest.

•How do these random audits work? That sounds terrifying.

•They cross-reference data from various sources. Once they find a discrepancy, they investigate your entire claim history.

The honest approach is always best. Washington ESD deals with family emergencies all the time. Call them, explain your situation, and ask about putting your claim on hold. It's better than risking fraud charges.

•You're right. I'm going to try that Claimyr service to get through to them tomorrow.

•Good choice. Better safe than sorry with unemployment fraud - they take that stuff seriously.

Wait, can someone explain what happens if you just stop filing weekly claims while you're gone? Would that be better than filing and lying about being available?

Reina Salazar
•Stopping weekly claims creates a break in your claim that can be complicated to restart. You're supposed to contact Washington ESD before stopping, not just disappear.

•This is all so confusing. Why can't they just make the rules clearer?

The travel restriction makes sense when you think about it. Unemployment insurance is supposed to help people who are temporarily out of work but actively seeking employment. Hard to do that from another country.

•True, but family emergencies happen. There should be some flexibility built into the system.

•There is flexibility - that's why they allow you to put claims on hold for valid reasons. You just have to go through proper channels.

My neighbor got audited by Washington ESD and they found his trip to Mexico from two years ago. Had to pay back $8,000 in benefits. The government agencies definitely share information.

•Two years ago?! I thought there was some kind of statute of limitations.

•Nope, they can go back several years if they find evidence of fraud. It's not worth the risk.

For what it's worth, when I had to deal with a complex Washington ESD issue, I used Claimyr and it was honestly a lifesaver. Got connected to an actual human who could help instead of navigating the phone tree maze for hours.

•I'm convinced. Going to try this service tomorrow. Been trying to reach them about my pending adjudication for weeks.

•The demo video really shows how simple it is. Wish I had known about it sooner.

Bottom line: be honest with Washington ESD about your travel. They have ways of finding out anyway, and the penalties for fraud are severe. A temporary hold on benefits is way better than having to repay everything with penalties.

Just wanted to add that Washington ESD has specific procedures for emergency travel situations. I had to leave suddenly when my father was hospitalized overseas and they were actually pretty understanding when I called ahead. They put my claim on temporary hold and when I returned with documentation (hospital records), they reactivated it without any penalties. The key is communicating with them before you travel, not after. Don't try to hide it - they really do have access to travel records through federal databases.

•This is really helpful to know! Did you have to provide any specific documentation when you called ahead, or just explain the emergency situation? I'm in a similar boat with my grandmother being in the hospital overseas and want to make sure I handle this properly.
