Can I pause Training Benefits for summer quarter and restart in fall with ESD?
Hi everyone, I got approved for Training Benefits through ESD this past winter and completed my spring quarter successfully. The problem is I'm not able to attend summer quarter for a couple reasons - some of the classes I need for my program aren't offered in summer, plus I'm dealing with some mental health stuff that I need to address before continuing. Would ESD allow me to basically pause my training benefits for summer quarter (not claim those weeks) and then restart them in fall quarter? My total approved training period is 2 years, so I'd still finish within that timeframe. Just worried that if I stop claiming for a quarter, they might terminate my whole training benefits approval. Anyone been through something similar or know how ESD handles these gaps?

Yes, you can pause your Training Benefits during summer and resume in fall. This is actually fairly common since many programs don't offer full course loads in summer. You should notify ESD through your eServices account that you're temporarily pausing your training program. Just make sure you don't file weekly claims during that period since you wouldn't meet the 'in approved training' requirement. When fall quarter starts, you can resume filing your weekly claims and indicate you're back in your approved training program.

•Thank you! That's a huge relief. Do I need to submit any special form to ESD when I want to restart in the fall? Or just start claiming again and select 'yes' to the training question?

•That's great to hear! Did ESD contact you at all during your summer break to check on your status? I'm worried they might think I've abandoned my training plan.

BE CAREFUL!!! When I tried to do this they CANCELLED my whole training program and I had to reapply!!! You NEED to talk to someone at ESD directly before you just stop claiming or you could lose EVERYTHING. The rules changed after COVID and now they're super strict about continuity!!

•When did this happen to you? I paused mine last summer (2024) with no issues, but maybe something changed recently? Did you notify them before pausing?

•This was early 2025 and yes I DID notify them through eServices but whoever processed it didn't understand what I was doing! That's why I'm saying you NEED to actually TALK to someone not just send a message!!!

To clarify what others have said, here's the official process for temporarily pausing Training Benefits: 1. Submit a message through your eServices account explaining your situation (classes not available + health reasons) 2. Specifically state your intent to resume in fall quarter with the exact date 3. Stop filing weekly claims during the pause period 4. Before fall quarter starts, submit another message confirming your return 5. Resume filing weekly claims once you're back in training As long as you remain within your approved training period (the 2 years you mentioned), this is allowed. Make sure to keep documentation of all communication with ESD in case there are any questions later.

•Thank you for laying it out so clearly! I'll follow these steps exactly. One last question - do I need to submit any proof from my school about the summer classes not being available, or is my explanation enough?

•It's a good idea to attach some documentation if possible - either a screenshot of the course catalog showing the classes aren't offered in summer, or a brief note from your academic advisor confirming this. The more documentation you provide upfront, the less likely you'll face issues when resuming benefits.

I had a similar situation last year and was so frustrated trying to reach ESD to get clear answers about pausing my training benefits. After getting hung up on multiple times, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent who confirmed exactly what to do. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent told me I needed to formally request a "training interruption" and document my reason. In my case it was for medical reasons, but unavailable classes is also valid. The key is getting clear instructions from an actual ESD specialist rather than risking your benefits on assumptions.

•Thanks for the tip! I've been trying to get through to ESD for days. I'll check this out if I can't connect with them soon.

One thing nobody mentioned - if you pause your training benefits you might need to do job searches again during that period if you want to claim regular unemployment during the summer. When you're not in approved training, you revert to standard UI requirements including the 3 job search activities per week. Just something to consider if you were planning to claim during summer.

•I wasn't planning to claim during summer, but that's really good to know! I'll take the break from claiming and just focus on my health for now. Thank you!

My sister-in-law works for WorkSource and she said people take breaks from Training Benefits all the time. Just make sure you document everything! Take screenshots of your eServices messages and record the date/time of any phone calls with ESD. The system works fine when you do things right but can be a nightmare if there are misunderstandings.

•This is so true! I've been on unemployment three times in my life and documentation saved me every time. Take notes during your calls with claim specialists too - get their ID number if possible!

Anyone else notice how the ESD website gives ZERO clear information about this specific situation?? It's like they deliberately make everything confusing so they can deny claims later! I spent HOURS searching for an official policy about pausing training and found NOTHING!

•You're right that this specific scenario isn't clearly addressed on their website. The closest reference is in the Training Benefits FAQ where it mentions that you must be making satisfactory progress in your approved training program. A formal pause for valid reasons (like course availability) can be considered part of your training plan, but you do need to communicate with ESD about it rather than just stopping and restarting claims.

I went through something very similar last year with my training benefits! I had to pause for a quarter due to a family emergency and was terrified they'd cancel everything. Here's what worked for me: 1. I called ESD directly (took forever to get through) and spoke with a training specialist who walked me through the "training interruption" process 2. They had me submit a formal request through eServices explaining my situation and expected return date 3. I provided documentation from my school showing my planned course sequence 4. They put a note in my file that I was on an approved temporary interruption The key thing the specialist told me was that as long as you're still within your overall training timeframe (sounds like you have plenty of time left in your 2-year period) and you have valid reasons, they'd rather work with you than have you drop out completely. I'd definitely recommend calling rather than just sending a message - the phone agents seemed more knowledgeable about the training interruption process than whoever handles the eServices messages. Good luck with your mental health journey too - taking care of yourself is the most important thing!

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'm definitely going to call ESD directly based on your experience and what others have said. It sounds like the phone agents have more knowledge about the training interruption process than the eServices team. I really appreciate you sharing the specific steps you took - having a specialist walk you through it and put a note in your file gives me confidence this can work out. And thanks for the encouragement about taking care of my mental health - it's been a tough decision but I know I need to prioritize that right now so I can come back stronger in the fall.

•This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I was really worried about calling because I've heard horror stories about wait times, but it sounds like getting a training specialist on the phone is worth it. I love that they actually have a formal "training interruption" process - makes me feel like this is more common than I thought. I'm going to gather my documentation from school first and then call ESD to get this properly set up. Really appreciate the support about prioritizing my mental health too. It's scary to pause something this important, but you're right that taking care of myself now will help me be more successful when I return in fall.
