ESD Training Benefits confusion - do they automatically start after regular UI ends?
I'm completely confused about how Training Benefits actually work with ESD. I got approved for Training Benefits back in August and have the approval letter in my Decisions section on eServices. The letter specifically says I'm approved for training benefits and an additional 26 weeks through June 2025 (that's when my program ends). Here's where I'm confused - my eServices dashboard never updated to show anything about Training Benefits. It still just shows my regular UI claim. And today I got a notification saying my regular UI benefits are running out soon and that I could apply for an extension. Does anyone know if the Training Benefits automatically kick in once my regular UI runs out? Or do I need to do something specific to activate them? I'm worried about a gap in payments while I'm still in school. The approval letter made it sound like it would be automatic, but now I'm not so sure.

•Thanks for the quick response! Did you have to do anything special to make the transition happen? Or did it just automatically switch over for you? I'm worried about calling because I can never get through to anyone.

Training Benefits don't automatically start after your regular UI ends - you need to make sure ESD knows you're still in your approved training program. When you get to your last few weeks of regular UI, you should be submitting a form called the "Training Benefits Transition Form" (sometimes also called the TB Verification form). This is how they verify you're still enrolled in the program you were approved for. Check your correspondence section in eServices - they might have sent you this form already with the notification about your benefits ending. If not, you should contact ESD directly to request it. The approval letter is just confirming your eligibility for the program, but the actual transition requires some action on your part.

•Thank you for explaining this! I just checked my correspondence and don't see any transition form. I'm getting really nervous now because my regular UI ends in 3 weeks and my rent is due right after that. I'll definitely need to contact ESD.

I went through this EXACT thing in January!!! It was super stressful and I nearly dropped out of my program because I thought I wouldn't have any income. What happens is that your file gets flagged for manual review when your regular UI ends. The TB doesn't automatically connect even though it SHOULD. My payments stopped for two weeks while some adjudicator reviewed my file and then they started up again with no explanation. My advice: start calling ESD NOW, not when your benefits run out. You want to get ahead of this!

•This is correct information. The Training Benefits program requires manual intervention by ESD staff to transition the claim from regular UI to TB status. Many claimants experience a 1-3 week gap in payments during this transition process. ESD's system does not have an automatic handoff mechanism between these two benefit types, despite what the approval letter might suggest. I recommend calling at least 2-3 weeks before your regular benefits end to ensure a smoother transition.

Try using Claimyr to reach ESD directly. I was in the same situation with training benefits last semester and couldn't get through calling normally. Claimyr got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 20 minutes who fixed everything on my account. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent I talked to explained that there's a specific code they need to add to your account to activate the training benefits when your regular UI runs out. If you wait for the system to catch it automatically, you'll definitely have a gap in payments.

The REAL problem here is that ESD designed their stupid system to be completely confusing!!! My cousin went through this training benefit mess and ended up HOMELESS because of the gap between benefits. They approve you for training benefits but then make it IMPOSSIBLE to actually get them without jumping through 50 hoops!!! This system is BROKEN BY DESIGN to reduce how many people actually get their benefits. They count on people giving up or missing some arbitrary deadline. The extension notification is just another trap to confuse you!!

•I think that's a bit extreme. My transition to training benefits was smooth last year. It helps if you keep all your paperwork organized and follow up regularly with your claims specialist. Not everyone has a bad experience.

To address your specific question about preventing a gap in payments: 1. Contact ESD immediately (don't wait until your regular UI runs out) 2. Specifically ask about the "Training Benefits Transition Process" 3. Request that they note in your file that you're continuing in your approved training program 4. Ask them to initiate the transition now rather than waiting for your regular benefits to exhaust 5. Get the name of the representative you speak with and a reference number for the call 6. Follow up with a secure message in eServices documenting your conversation Some claims specialists can start the transition process early to prevent gaps, but you need to be proactive about requesting this.

One more thing - make sure your school is still sending verification of enrollment to ESD! My community college had stopped sending updates because they thought it was a one-time thing, but ESD needs ongoing verification. Check with your school's financial aid office to make sure they're still submitting the required paperwork.

•I hadn't even thought of that! I'll check with my program coordinator tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

I remember when I was on training benefits they sent me something called a "Continued Claim Form" that I had to fill out. Maybe check your mail carefully? Sometimes they send important stuff through regular mail instead of putting it on eServices.

•yeah they do that! its super annoying how they use different systems for different forms. some stuff is only on eServices, other stuff only comes in the mail. makes no sense!!!

Just went through this exact situation last month! Here's what I learned the hard way: ESD has a "Training Benefits Continuation" process that's separate from regular UI extensions. When you get that extension notification, ignore it - that's for people NOT on training benefits. What you need to do is log into eServices and look under "Correspondence" for a form called "Training Program Status Verification" or something similar. If it's not there yet, it should appear in the next week or two. This form asks you to confirm you're still enrolled and making satisfactory progress. The key thing is to submit this form BEFORE your regular UI runs out. If you wait until after, there's definitely going to be a gap. I submitted mine 2 weeks early and the transition was seamless - my payments continued without interruption. Also, double-check that your training program is still sending enrollment verification to ESD each quarter. My school forgot to send the winter quarter update and it almost screwed up my benefits.
