Can I apply for partial unemployment benefits with Washington ESD?
My hours got cut from 40 to 20 per week at my job and I'm struggling to pay rent. I heard you might be able to get partial unemployment if you're still working but with reduced hours. Is this true for Washington state? How does it work exactly? Do I need to file weekly claims like regular unemployment? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, Washington ESD does offer partial unemployment benefits! You can still work part-time and collect partial UI benefits as long as you meet certain requirements. You'll need to report your weekly earnings when you file your weekly claims.

•That's great news! Do you know what the earnings limit is? I don't want to mess up my claim.

•It depends on your weekly benefit amount. Generally you can earn up to your weekly benefit amount plus $5 before it affects your benefits. Anything over that gets deducted.

You definitely qualify for partial unemployment. I was in the same situation last year when my restaurant cut everyone's hours. The key is being honest about your earnings on your weekly claims.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved? I'm worried about the wait time.

•Mine took about 2-3 weeks to process. Make sure you have all your employment info ready when you apply.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my partial claim but their phone lines are always busy. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you get through to actual Washington ESD agents. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling!

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•It's worth it just to avoid the endless busy signals. I was able to get my partial claim questions answered same day instead of calling for weeks.

Be careful with partial unemployment - Washington ESD is really strict about reporting earnings. If you mess up your weekly claims they can create an overpayment and you'll owe money back.

•What counts as earnings? Just my regular paycheck or tips too?

•ALL earnings including tips, commissions, bonuses, everything. Report it all on your weekly claim or you'll get in trouble later.

•This is so confusing! Why can't they just make it simple?

•The Washington ESD website works better early in the morning or late at night when fewer people are using it.

Quick update - I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and actually got through to Washington ESD! The agent explained my partial claim situation perfectly. Definitely recommend it if you're stuck on hold.

•That's awesome! What did they tell you about partial claims?

•They confirmed I can work up to 32 hours per week and still get partial benefits as long as I report everything correctly on my weekly claims.

I'm dealing with the same thing but I'm scared to apply because what if they deny me and then I can't get regular unemployment later if I get laid off completely?

•That's not how it works. Applying for partial unemployment now won't hurt your ability to get regular UI benefits later if you lose your job completely.

•Are you sure? I don't want to mess up my eligibility for full benefits.

•I went from partial to full unemployment when my restaurant closed permanently. No issues at all with my claim.

The job search requirements are different for partial unemployment too. You don't have to do as many job searches per week if you're already working part-time.

Mateo Silva
•Really? How many job searches do you have to do for partial claims?

•I think it's 1-2 per week instead of 3, but check with Washington ESD to be sure. The requirements change sometimes.

Does anyone know if you have to be available for full-time work to get partial unemployment? My current job won't let me work more than 25 hours even though I want to.

•You need to be able and available for full-time work, but you can still work your part-time job while looking for additional work.

•That makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!

I filed for partial unemployment 3 months ago and it's been a lifesaver. The extra money helps cover my bills while I look for a better full-time job. Just make sure you report your earnings accurately every week!

•How much do you typically get in partial benefits compared to your work earnings?
0 coins
Lucy Taylor
•It varies based on what I earn that week, but usually I get around $150-200 in partial benefits on top of my part-time wages.

Washington ESD's partial unemployment program is actually pretty generous compared to other states. You can earn quite a bit before your benefits get reduced.

•What's the exact formula they use to calculate partial benefits?
0 coins
Connor Murphy
•It's your weekly benefit amount minus your earnings over $5. So if your weekly benefit is $300 and you earn $100, you'd get $295 in partial benefits.

been working part time for 6 months and getting partial unemployment the whole time... it's not a lot but every little bit helps with groceries and gas

•Have you had any issues with Washington ESD during those 6 months?

•nope just file my weekly claims every sunday and report my earnings... pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it

Make sure you understand the difference between gross and net earnings when reporting! I made that mistake early on and had to correct it with Washington ESD.

Mateo Silva
•Do you report gross earnings or take-home pay?
0 coins
Amelia Dietrich
•You report gross earnings (before taxes and deductions) on your weekly claim. Don't report your net take-home amount.

•This is super important - reporting the wrong amount can trigger an audit or overpayment notice.

I tried using Claimyr too after seeing it mentioned here and it actually worked! Got through to Washington ESD in like 10 minutes instead of calling all day. They helped me understand my partial claim status.

One thing to remember is that partial unemployment benefits count toward your total benefit year. So if you collect partial benefits for 6 months, that's 6 months less of regular benefits if you lose your job completely.
0 coins
Mateo Silva
•Wait, so I'm using up my benefit time even with partial claims?
0 coins
Katherine Ziminski
•Yes, each week you file a claim (even partial) counts toward your 26-week benefit year limit in Washington.
0 coins
Victoria Jones
•That's correct, but you can potentially qualify for a new benefit year if you earn enough wages while working part-time.

Does anyone know if vacation pay affects partial unemployment benefits? My job is giving me a small vacation payout next week.
0 coins
Connor Murphy
•Yes, you need to report vacation pay as earnings for the week it covers, not when you receive it. Check with Washington ESD about how to report it properly.

Noah Irving
•Thanks, I'll make sure to ask about that when I call them.

The hardest part about partial unemployment is keeping track of all your earnings and making sure you report everything correctly. I use a spreadsheet to track my hours and pay.
0 coins
Mateo Silva
•That's a great idea! Do you track anything else besides hours and pay?
0 coins
Vanessa Chang
•I also track my job search activities since I still need to do those for partial claims. Helps me stay organized.
