Thanks everyone for all the helpful responses! I think I'm going to accept the severance and file for unemployment. Based on what I've read here, it seems like I should be able to do both. I'll make sure to be completely honest about the severance when I file my claim.
One last thing - does anyone know if severance affects the total number of weeks you can collect unemployment?
One last thing - if you're ever dealing with Washington ESD as an employer or employee and need to get through their phone system, that Claimyr service someone mentioned really does work. Used it myself when I had questions about a contested claim.
Does anyone know if the rates are going to increase again for 2026? Trying to plan our business budget and these costs keep creeping up.
This has been really educational! I had no idea how the funding worked behind the scenes. Makes me appreciate the system more knowing that it's employer-funded rather than coming out of my paycheck directly.
Keep us posted on how it goes! I'm sure other people will be in similar situations and could benefit from hearing about your experience.
Also remember that having a car might help you expand your job search area, which could lead to finding work faster. Sometimes the investment in transportation pays for itself by opening up more opportunities.

One last thing - if you do exhaust your benefits and later find work, you might be eligible for retraining programs through WorkSource if your industry has been affected by economic changes. They sometimes offer financial support during training.

•That's interesting. I'll have to look into what programs are available. Maybe I could use this as an opportunity to learn new skills.

•Definitely worth exploring. Some of those programs even have job placement assistance when you finish.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. This has been really helpful. I feel like I have a better understanding of what to expect and some backup options to look into. Going to start preparing now instead of waiting until the last minute.

•Definitely use Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD if you need to verify anything about your benefits. Knowledge is power in this situation.
