If you run into any issues with your claim getting stuck or need to check on status, seriously consider Claimyr. It's so much easier than the phone maze Washington ESD puts you through. Their customer service is actually helpful too.
Friend of mine tried that claimyr thing and it actually worked. she was stuck in adjudication hell for 2 months and they got her through to someone who could actually look at her case. worth checking out if you get stuck
Bottom line: file your claim, be honest about what happened, keep records of everything, and don't give up if they initially deny you. The appeals process exists for a reason and many people win on appeal even after being denied initially.
one last thing - if your employer contests your claim don't panic. its pretty common and doesn't mean you won't get benefits. just means washington esd has to investigate and make a determination
sometimes to avoid their unemployment tax going up, or if they think you quit or were fired for misconduct. most of the time the employee still wins if they have good documentation
This is when having a service like Claimyr becomes really valuable - if you need to speak with Washington ESD about a contested claim, you don't want to waste days trying to get through on the phone.
Best of luck with your application! The system isn't perfect but it does work when you need it. Just stay on top of your weekly claims and job search requirements once you get approved.
This whole thread has been super helpful. I was in the same boat as OP - knew unemployment existed but had no idea how it actually worked. Now I feel like I have a basic understanding of what to expect.
One last tip from someone who's been through it - keep detailed records of everything. Every application you submit, every contact you make, every communication with Washington ESD. You never know when you'll need to reference something.

Just wanted to add that vacation payout is treated the same as severance usually. If you got both, report both but don't stress about it. Washington ESD handles this stuff all the time.

•I did get vacation payout too, about $1,500. Good to know I should report that as well.

•Yep, report everything. They'd rather have complete information upfront than discover it later during an audit or something.

Last thought - if you end up needing to talk to Washington ESD about your severance and can't get through on the phone, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually works. I was skeptical at first but they got me through to an agent when I'd been trying for days on my own.

•Good to have that as a backup option. Hopefully I won't need it but it's reassuring to know it exists.

•Exactly. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to get clarity on these things, and Claimyr makes that possible when the regular phone system fails you.
