Just want to add that if you do end up needing to appeal this or get more information, don't wait too long. Most deadlines with Washington ESD are pretty strict and they're not always flexible about extensions.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! I'm going to try the online payment system first, and if that doesn't work I'll look into that Claimyr service to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. Really appreciate all the different perspectives on this.
Make sure you understand the difference between fraud and overpayment. Fraud requires intent to deceive. Overpayment can happen due to mistakes or misunderstanding. Your situation sounds like the latter.
Whatever you do, don't ignore this hoping it goes away. I know someone who did that and it turned a simple overpayment into a much bigger problem with way higher penalties.
Definitely not ignoring it. I'm going to try calling first thing Monday and if I can't get through I'll try that Claimyr service.
For what it's worth, I used Claimyr last month when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about my weekly claim certification. It was super easy and they got me connected right away. Worth checking out the demo they have online.
Just remember that unemployment numbers are lagging indicators. By the time we see them spike, the economic problems that caused them started months earlier. The good news is that means recovery can happen faster than the numbers suggest too.
For what it's worth, Washington ESD benefits are among the better ones in the country. The maximum weekly amount is pretty decent compared to other states, and the duration is standard at 26 weeks.
One last tip - make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. The weekly is what you get each week, the maximum is the total you can collect over the entire benefit year (weekly amount × 26 weeks).

been following this thread and it's really helpful. i'm in HR and see this situation a lot. employers sometimes think firing someone automatically disqualifies them from unemployment but that's not how it works. the reason for termination is what matters.

•From an HR perspective, does my situation sound like something that would qualify for benefits?

•Based on what you've described - performance issues combined with safety complaints and sudden write-ups after two years of good performance - yes, I think you have a strong case for approval.
