OP, you've got this! The process seems scary at first but thousands of people go through it successfully every week. Just take it one step at a time and don't be afraid to ask questions here if you get stuck.
I worked in HR for years and had to explain this to new employees all the time. Many people don't realize they're contributing until they see it on their first paystub. It's good that you're asking questions and understanding your deductions!
Just want to add that if you ever have questions about your specific deductions or contribution amounts, your HR department should be able to explain the breakdown. Every employer handles payroll slightly differently.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! I feel much more prepared to file my claim now. Sounds like I should qualify for a decent benefit amount based on my previous salary.
One last tip - make sure you file your claim as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. Benefits don't start until the week you file, so any delay costs you money.
The whole process is honestly pretty simple once you understand it. File your final claim with work info, stop filing, done. Don't stress about 'canceling' anything officially.
Welcome to the 'back to work' club! Hope your new job goes well. Remember - if anything goes wrong in the first few months, your unemployment claim is still there in your benefit year if you need it.

Good luck with your application! The system can be frustrating but once you get through the initial setup, weekly claims are pretty straightforward. Just be patient and thorough with your paperwork.

One more thing - if you're denied benefits, don't panic. You can appeal the decision within 30 days. The appeal process is separate from the initial application and many denials get overturned on appeal.

•What are the most common reasons for getting denied?

•Usually it's related to the reason you left your job - if Washington ESD thinks you quit without good cause or were fired for misconduct. But these determinations can often be successfully appealed with the right documentation.
