One last tip - keep track of all your job search activities starting now. Washington requires you to make 3 job search contacts per week, and they can audit your records. Keep a log of where you applied, when, and what happened.
Yeah definitely start now. Some people get randomly selected for job search audits and if you can't prove you've been looking, they can disqualify you and make you pay benefits back.
The WorkSourceWA website is good for tracking job searches if you don't want to keep a manual log.
Update us on how the filing process goes! I'm sure others reading this thread might be in similar situations and would benefit from hearing about your experience.
Will do! Thanks everyone for all the advice and encouragement. Really appreciate this community.
Good luck! You got this 💪
The most important thing is to apply as soon as you become unemployed, even if you're not sure you qualify. You can't get benefits for weeks before you apply, so don't wait around trying to calculate everything perfectly.
Good point. I've been putting it off because I wasn't sure about the requirements, but I should probably just apply and see what happens.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! This thread definitely cleared up my confusion about the work requirements. Going to log into my account tonight and check my wage history, then probably apply this weekend.
And remember, if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD and can't get through, that Claimyr service is still available. Sometimes it's worth it just to get real answers to specific questions about your situation.
For anyone still confused about this - there are online calculators that can give you a rough estimate of your Washington unemployment benefits based on your wage history. Not perfect but helpful for getting a ballpark figure.
Really? Where can I find those calculators?
Just search for 'Washington state unemployment calculator' - there are a few different ones available. Just remember they're estimates since they don't have access to your actual wage records.
This thread has been super helpful! I've been wondering about my calculation for months but was too embarrassed to ask. Turns out lots of people are confused about the same thing.
Same here! Glad I asked because I learned a lot from everyone's responses.
The benefit calculation is genuinely complex - there's no shame in not understanding it immediately. Even Washington ESD staff sometimes need to look things up!
If your claim is taking longer than expected, it might be worth trying to contact Washington ESD directly. I know the phones are terrible but sometimes you can get through early in the morning or right when they open.
I've tried calling at 8am sharp when they open and still can't get through. The system is completely jammed.
This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - saved me from burning hours every day trying to get through on my own. Sometimes you just need to talk to an actual person to find out what's happening.
Just want to echo what others have said about filing weekly claims while you wait. I almost made the mistake of thinking I didn't need to do anything until my claim was approved. Thank goodness I read this forum!
Same here! I had no idea about the weekly claims requirement. This thread has been super helpful.
Glad people are finding this useful. The weekly claims requirement trips up a lot of first-time filers.

I tried that and still couldn't get through. That's when I used Claimyr and it was so much easier. Worth checking out if you're having trouble reaching them.

Yeah I've heard good things about that service. Might try it if I have issues with my next claim.
