How long it takes to get unemployment benefits approved in Washington ESD?
I just lost my job last Friday and need to know how long it takes to get unemployment benefits approved through Washington ESD. My manager said I was laid off due to budget cuts, so I think I qualify. I've never filed for unemployment before and I'm worried about how long the process takes. I have rent due in 3 weeks and really need to know what to expect. Can someone walk me through the timeline? I heard it can take forever but hoping that's not true.

The initial application processing usually takes 1-2 weeks if everything goes smoothly. After you file your claim, Washington ESD has to verify your employment history and wages. If there are no issues, you should get your first payment within 2-3 weeks of filing. Make sure you file your weekly claims every week even while waiting for approval.

•Thanks! Do I need to wait for approval before filing weekly claims or start right away?

•Start filing weekly claims immediately after submitting your initial application. You won't get paid for weeks you don't file, even if your claim gets approved later.

It really depends on your situation. Mine took 6 weeks because they had to do an investigation into why I left my job. If Washington ESD needs to verify anything with your employer or if there are any red flags, it goes into adjudication and that can add several weeks to the process.

•What kind of red flags would cause delays? I was definitely laid off, not fired or anything.

•Usually disputes about whether you quit vs were fired, or if there's conflicting information between what you report and what your employer reports to Washington ESD.

I've been through this process twice. The standard timeline is 2-3 weeks if there are no complications. However, if you can't get through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status or resolve any issues, it can drag on much longer. I spent hours trying to call them during my second claim.

•How did you finally get through to talk to someone at Washington ESD?

•I ended up using Claimyr.com - it's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Way better than spending all day redialing. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

DONT GET YOUR HOPES UP. I filed in January and didn't see a penny until March because of their stupid adjudication process. Washington ESD is completely overwhelmed and understaffed. Even simple claims can take months if you get stuck in their system.

•That's really frustrating but probably not typical. Most people I know got approved within a few weeks.

•Maybe I just had bad luck but their phone system is impossible and their online messages never get answered.

The key is making sure you have all your documentation ready when you file. Have your Social Security card, ID, and employment history for the last 18 months. If Washington ESD has to request additional information from you, that adds time to the process.

•What employment history do they need exactly? Just my last job or further back?

Ingrid Larsson
•They look at your base period which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters. So roughly 12-15 months of work history.

been there done that, usually 2-3 weeks but depends on your employer responding to Washington ESD quickly

•Do employers usually respond quickly or do they drag their feet?

Carlos Mendoza
•most respond within a week but some take longer especially if they're disputing the claim

One thing to keep in mind is that even after approval, there's usually a one-week waiting period before you get your first payment. So factor that into your timeline. Your first week of unemployment typically isn't paid unless you qualify for certain exceptions.

•Wait, so even if I get approved in 2 weeks, I still have to wait another week for payment?

LilMama23
•The waiting week is built into the process. So if you file today and get approved in 2 weeks, you'd get paid for week 2 and beyond, but not week 1.

•That's not always true anymore. During COVID they waived the waiting week, not sure if that's still in effect.

My advice is to be proactive about following up. Don't just wait and hope for the best. Check your account regularly and if anything seems stuck, try to get in touch with Washington ESD right away. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to resolve issues.

•How often should I check my account? Daily seems excessive but weekly might not be enough.

•I'd say every 2-3 days initially, then weekly once things are processing normally.

If you do run into problems reaching Washington ESD, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. They got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like you'd be paying just to make a phone call.

•It's worth it when you're stuck and can't get through any other way. Way less stressful than spending entire days redialing.

The timeline also depends on what day of the week you file. I filed on a Wednesday and got approved the next Wednesday, so exactly one week. But I've heard Friday filings take longer because of weekend processing delays.

•Good point! I was planning to file tomorrow which is Thursday. Should I wait until Monday?

Zainab Mahmoud
•No don't wait! File as soon as possible. The day you file becomes your claim start date, so delaying just costs you money.

Also make sure you understand the job search requirements before you start getting payments. Washington ESD requires you to make job contacts every week and keep records. If you don't follow those rules, they can stop your benefits.

•How many job contacts do I need to make per week?

Tyrone Johnson
•I think it's 3 per week but check the Washington ESD website because requirements can change.

•It's actually 3 job search activities per week, which can include job applications, networking events, or career counseling sessions.

honestly the whole system is a mess but most people do get through it eventually, just be patient and persistent

One more tip - make sure you file your weekly claims by the deadline each week. If you miss a week, you typically can't go back and file it later. Washington ESD is pretty strict about those deadlines.

Aisha Patel
•What day is the deadline? Is it the same every week?
0 coins
Ingrid Larsson
•You typically have from Sunday through Saturday to file for the previous week, but check your account for exact deadlines.

I'm in a similar situation, got laid off two weeks ago and still waiting for approval. It's nerve-wracking not knowing when the money will start coming in.

•Have you been filing your weekly claims? I want to make sure I'm doing everything right.

•Yes, filing every week even though I haven't been approved yet. Better safe than sorry.

For anyone reading this who gets stuck in the system - seriously consider using Claimyr. I know I've mentioned it before but it genuinely saved me weeks of frustration. Being able to actually talk to a Washington ESD agent made all the difference in getting my issues resolved quickly.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully everything goes smoothly but good to have options.

Bottom line - if you were legitimately laid off and have your paperwork in order, you should see your first payment within 3-4 weeks of filing. The system isn't perfect but it does work for most people.

Aisha Patel
•That's reassuring. I think I have everything I need so hopefully it goes smoothly.

•Just remember to keep filing those weekly claims and stay on top of any correspondence from Washington ESD. You'll get through this!

Good luck with your claim! Most people stress about it more than necessary. The vast majority of legitimate claims get approved without major issues.
