How long to get unemployment benefits approved in Washington - timeline?
I just applied for unemployment through Washington ESD last week after getting laid off from my warehouse job. My employer said it was due to budget cuts and they had to let 15 people go. I'm wondering how long it typically takes to get approved and start receiving benefits? I've heard different things from people - some say 2 weeks, others say it can take over a month. My rent is due in 3 weeks and I'm starting to get worried. Has anyone recently gone through this process? What should I expect for timing?

The standard processing time for Washington ESD is usually 2-3 weeks if there are no issues with your claim. Since you were laid off due to budget cuts, that's considered involuntary separation which shouldn't cause any delays. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial determination.

•Thanks! I did file my first weekly claim yesterday. Should I keep doing that every week even though I haven't been approved yet?

•Yes, definitely keep filing weekly. You won't get paid for weeks you don't file, even if you're later approved retroactively.

Mine took exactly 18 days last month. But I had a friend who waited 6 weeks because his claim went into adjudication - they had to verify his work history or something.

•What causes it to go into adjudication? I'm worried mine might get stuck there too.

•Usually happens if there's a question about why you left your job, or if your employer disputes the claim. Since you were laid off, you should be fine.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me connect with an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call for days and can never get through.

Sofia Rodriguez
•Yeah it's real, they basically handle the calling and wait time for you. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•I don't remember the exact amount but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of calling 50+ times a day.

LMAO 2-3 weeks my ass! I waited 7 weeks and had to call every single day. Washington ESD is a JOKE. They're so backed up it's ridiculous.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I was afraid of hearing. Did you eventually get approved?

Miguel Herrera
•Yeah eventually but by then I was behind on everything. Start looking for other income sources NOW just in case.

The official timeline on the Washington ESD website says initial claims are processed within 21 days, but that doesn't include the one-week waiting period. So realistically you're looking at about 4 weeks total before your first payment if everything goes smoothly.

•Wait, there's a waiting period too? Nobody told me about that.

•Yes, Washington has a one-week waiting period for unemployment benefits. It's unpaid but you still need to file a claim for that week.

•I thought they got rid of the waiting period during COVID?

•That was temporary. The waiting period is back in effect now.

mine was approved in 12 days but took another week to get my debit card in the mail so plan for that delay too

•Good point about the debit card. How long did it take to arrive?

•about 7-10 business days after approval

This is so stressful! I applied 3 weeks ago and still nothing. My claim just says 'under review' and I can't get anyone on the phone. I've tried calling first thing in the morning, during lunch, even late afternoon. Always busy signal or it hangs up after 2 hours on hold.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. The phone system is completely overwhelmed. At least with their service I knew someone would eventually answer.

•I might have to look into that. This is driving me crazy and I'm running out of savings.

Make sure you have all your documentation ready. They might ask for proof of your work history, your separation notice, or other paperwork. Having everything organized can speed up the process.

•What kind of paperwork do they usually want?
0 coins
Keisha Jackson
•Your separation notice from your employer is the big one. Also pay stubs from your last few months of work, and sometimes they want verification of your Social Security number.

I got lucky and mine was processed in 10 days, but I think it helped that I applied right at the beginning of the week. I've heard they process claims in batches so timing might matter.

•Interesting theory about the batches. I applied on a Friday so maybe that hurt me.

•Could be coincidence but yeah, Monday/Tuesday applications seem to move faster from what I've observed.

The waiting is the worst part honestly. Even when you know you qualify, you're just sitting there wondering if there's some problem you don't know about. At least Washington ESD sends you a determination letter when they make a decision, so you'll know one way or the other.

•How will I know if there's a problem with my claim?

Oliver Schmidt
•They'll either send you a letter asking for more information, or you'll see a note in your online account about additional documents needed.

Just want to mention that even if your claim takes longer than expected, they'll pay you retroactively for all the weeks you filed claims. So you won't lose money as long as you keep filing weekly.

Fatima Al-Sayed
•That's reassuring at least. I was worried I'd miss out on benefits if it took too long.

•Nope, as long as you file every week you're covered. The key is not missing any weekly filing deadlines.

I work at a nonprofit that helps people with unemployment claims and I can tell you that Washington ESD is actually faster than most states. 2-3 weeks is pretty standard. The problem is people don't realize about the waiting period and the time to get the debit card.

Fatima Al-Sayed
•So realistically I should plan on 4-5 weeks total before I see any money?
0 coins
Javier Torres
•That's a safe estimate, yes. Sometimes faster, but plan for 4-5 weeks and you won't be disappointed.

•What's the fastest you've seen someone get approved and paid?

•Fastest I've seen was 8 days from application to first payment, but that's very rare and everything has to go perfectly.

My brother applied in January and it took 5 weeks because they had to verify his employment with a company that had closed down. Even straightforward cases can hit snags you don't expect.

Fatima Al-Sayed
•Oh wow, what did he do when the company was closed?

QuantumLeap
•He had to provide pay stubs and tax documents to prove he worked there. Took forever because everything had to be mailed in.

The best advice I can give is to be patient but proactive. Check your online account daily, respond immediately to any requests for information, and keep detailed records of everything. And yeah, if you need to talk to someone, that Claimyr service is legit - I used it when my claim got stuck.

•Thanks for all the advice everyone. Sounds like I just need to be patient and keep filing weekly.

•Exactly. The system works, it's just slow. Hang in there!

One thing nobody mentioned - make sure you're doing your work search activities even while waiting for approval. Washington ESD requires job search efforts and you don't want to get dinged for not looking for work during your waiting period.

Fatima Al-Sayed
•How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?
0 coins
Isabella Santos
•It's 3 job search activities per week in Washington. Can be applications, networking events, job fairs, etc. Keep a log of everything.
