Overall the system works but it's bureaucratic and slow. Just be patient, follow the rules, and keep detailed records of everything.
Been on unemployment 3 times in my career and each time I learn something new about how confusing their rules are. But yeah, the basics are: file initial claim, file weekly claims, do job searches, report any work/earnings, be patient.
The whole base period thing is confusing but it's actually designed to give you the best possible benefit amount by using your highest earning quarter. Could be worse - some states use different formulas that result in lower payments.
Just wanted to add that if you worked for multiple employers during your base period, Washington ESD will combine all those wages when calculating your benefits. So don't worry if you switched jobs - they'll use the total from all employers.
Keep all your documents organized - pay stubs, termination letter, any correspondence from Washington ESD. You might need them later.
The Washington ESD customer service has gotten better but calling them is still a pain. If you do need to call, try right when they open at 8 AM or during lunch hours when call volume might be lower.
Or just use that Claimyr thing people mentioned. Saved me from dealing with busy signals.
Don't stress too much about the process. Millions of people file for unemployment every year and most claims go through fine. Just be honest, keep good records, and file your weekly claims on time. You'll probably have your determination within 2-3 weeks.

File immediately and be patient with the process. Even straightforward claims can take 2-3 weeks to process. Don't panic if you don't hear back right away.

•Good luck! Remember to file your weekly claims every week even while waiting for approval.

One more thing - if you worked in multiple states recently, make sure you file in the right state. Washington ESD can help you figure out where to file if you're not sure.

•I've only worked in Washington so I should be good there.
