washington esd makes this way more complicated than it needs to be. other states just give you a percentage of your last job's pay and call it good
Bottom line: if your benefit amount seems wrong, don't just accept it. Get your pay records together and contact Washington ESD to have them explain the calculation. I've seen too many people miss out on money they were entitled to because they didn't question the initial determination.
Thanks everyone for all the info! I'm definitely going to gather my W-2s and try to get through to someone at Washington ESD to go over my calculation step by step.
If you can't get through the regular way, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work for getting past the phone queue. Good luck!
The calculation seems fair but what really bugs me is how long it takes to get answers when you have questions. The whole system needs better customer service.
Does anyone know if the tax withholding election carries over to the next benefit year if you have to reapply? Or do you have to set it up again?
Sorry to hear about your layoff. The 26 weeks should give you enough time to find something good if you stay focused. The Washington job market isn't terrible right now, especially for warehouse and logistics work.
Last thing - remember to file your weekly claims every week even if you're not sure about something. Missing a week can cause delays in your payments. It's better to file and ask questions later than to skip a week.

bottom line - its not welfare or charity. you paid for it, your employers paid for it, and you earned the right to collect it when you lost your job through no fault of your own. end of story.

This whole thread has been super educational. Never really thought about the mechanics behind unemployment funding before but it makes total sense now. Thanks for asking the question OP!

•You're welcome! I'm glad other people found it helpful too. Sometimes the obvious questions are the ones worth asking.
