Will my 2024 income appear on Social Security records when applying at FRA in March 2025?

Hello everyone, I've been planning my retirement carefully and have a timing question about my earnings record. I'm hitting my full retirement age (FRA) next March 2025 and plan to apply for Social Security benefits then. I'm still working through this year, and my accountant can have my 2024 taxes ready to file by early February 2025. My question is: if I file my taxes in February 2025, will those 2024 earnings show up on my Social Security earnings record by the time I apply in March 2025? Or will there be some delay in SSA processing that income? I'm asking because my 2024 income will be one of my higher earning years, and I want to make sure it counts toward my benefit calculation. Thanks for any insights!

No it wont show up that fast. My taxes got done in january last year and took till june to show on my SS record.

Oh that's concerning - I was hoping it would be faster. Do you know if there's any way to make sure SSA includes those earnings in my initial benefit calculation?

The timing of your tax filing doesn't actually affect when your earnings show up in the Social Security system. Your employer reports your wages to SSA quarterly through W-2 forms, and those are what update your earnings record, not your personal tax filing. By March 2025, your employer should have already submitted your 2024 W-2 information (they're required to do this by January 31), so the earnings should theoretically be in the system. However, there can sometimes be a lag between when employers submit this information and when it actually appears in your Social Security earnings record. It's not uncommon for it to take 2-3 months for the most recent year's earnings to be fully processed and visible in the system.

Thank you for explaining that! So if I understand correctly, my employer's W-2 reporting is what matters, not my tax filing. That's good to know. Is there anything I should do when I apply if my 2024 earnings aren't showing yet?

When you apply, if your 2024 earnings aren't showing yet, make sure to mention this specifically to the SSA representative. Bring a copy of your W-2 for 2024 as proof of those earnings. The SSA can make note of these earnings in your application even if they haven't been fully processed in their system yet. They may initially calculate your benefit without the 2024 earnings and then automatically adjust it later when those earnings are fully processed. If that happens, you'll receive any additional back payments you're entitled to once they recalculate.

Good luck getting through to ssa on the phone!! I tried for WEEKS last year and either got hung up on or waited 2+ hours!!

I had this EXACT same situation last year!!! Applied in April 2024 right after my FRA and my 2023 income wasn't showing up even though I filed taxes in February. The SSA rep told me they would calculate my benefit without it and then RECALCULATE later when it appeared. But guess what? Six months later I had to CALL THEM to remind them because they never did the recalculation!! Make sure you keep track of everything and follow up with them!!!

That's concerning! Did they eventually adjust your benefits correctly? Did you get backpay for the months they underpaid you?

Yes they finally fixed it but it took FOREVER and multiple phone calls. I did get the backpay for the difference but it was so frustrating. The first few reps I talked to had no idea what I was talking about!! Finally got someone who understood and fixed it. KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING - your W-2, tax return, any letters from SSA. And write down names and dates when you talk to them!!

When I called SSA about my missing 2022 earnings, I used Claimyr.com and got through to a rep in about 10 minutes instead of waiting for hours. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - it basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is about to pick up. Made the whole process so much less stressful! The agent I spoke with was able to note my most recent earnings in my file even though they weren't showing in the system yet.

I've never heard of this service before. Does it really work? I hate waiting on hold for hours, so this might be worth trying when I apply.

Yes, it actually works! I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for days to get through. The service calls SSA for you and then calls you when they're about to connect you to an agent. Saved me hours of frustration. The agent I got was super helpful and made notes about my missing earnings in my file.

I want to clarify something important: The benefit calculation process is more flexible than many people realize. When you apply for retirement benefits, SSA will use the earnings information they have available at that time. If your 2024 earnings aren't showing yet but would increase your benefit amount, you have options: 1. You can provide your W-2 or self-employment tax return as proof of those earnings when you apply. 2. SSA can process your claim with a notation that 2024 earnings are pending. 3. Once those earnings are processed (which might take until mid-2025), SSA should automatically recalculate your benefit amount and pay any additional amounts retroactively. 4. If they don't do this automatically, you can request a benefit recalculation called a recomputation. This happens frequently with people who apply early in the year, so SSA has established procedures to handle it. Just make sure to follow up if you don't see an adjustment within 6 months.

wait so does ss calculate from the 35 years of highest earnings or just the last few years? i thought it was 35 years

You're correct - Social Security does use your highest 35 years of earnings (adjusted for inflation) to calculate your benefit. That's why the 2024 earnings matter to the original poster - if 2024 is one of their highest earning years, it would replace a lower earning year in that 35-year calculation, potentially increasing their benefit amount. For someone at full retirement age in 2025, those 35 years could span several decades of their working life, not just the most recent years.

I had a similar issue and found that if I went to my local SS office in person with my W-2 they were able to note it in my file right away. Much better than trying to do it over the phone! Just make an appointment online first.

Thank you all for the helpful information! I'll definitely bring my W-2 when I apply and make sure to mention that my 2024 earnings might not be showing up yet. I'll also keep track of everything and follow up in a few months if I don't see an adjustment. This is all really useful advice!
