Will I miss a Social Security check when transitioning from SSDI to retirement benefits at FRA?

I'm currently receiving SSDI (have been for about 7 years) and my Full Retirement Age is coming up in about two months. My neighbor told me that when disability benefits automatically convert to retirement benefits at FRA, there's a gap month where you don't receive a payment during the transition. Is this true? I absolutely cannot afford to miss a monthly check - I live on a very tight budget and any interruption would be devastating. Has anyone gone through this transition recently? Did your payments continue smoothly, or was there a gap? I've tried calling SSA three times this week but kept getting disconnected after waiting 45+ minutes each time.

Your neighbor is incorrect. There is NO gap month when transitioning from disability to retirement benefits at full retirement age. The conversion is automatic and seamless - you'll continue to receive the same monthly amount without interruption. This is an administrative change that happens in SSA's systems; from your perspective as the beneficiary, nothing changes except the internal classification of your benefit. Your payment dates and amounts should remain exactly the same.

Thank you so much for clarifying! What a relief. Do I need to do anything to make sure the transition goes smoothly? Should I be contacting SSA beforehand just to make sure?

THE SSA SCREWS EVERYTHING UP!!!! When I transitioned two years ago they DID skip a month and it took SEVEN CALLS and talking to THREE supervisors to get it fixed!!!! They kept saying it was 'processing normally' while I couldn't pay my electric bill!!! Don't listen to people saying it's automatic and perfect - CALL THEM REPEATEDLY until they confirm everything is correct in their system!!!

The transition from SSDI to retirement benefits at FRA should be completely automatic with no missed payments. However, it's always good practice to contact SSA about 30 days before your FRA just to confirm everything is set up correctly in their system. You can also create or log into your my Social Security account online at ssa.gov to verify your benefit information and monitor the transition. If you're having trouble reaching them by phone, have you considered using Claimyr? I had similar issues getting through to SSA and used claimyr.com - they got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of the hours I was waiting before. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. Made the whole process much less stressful.

I haven't heard of that service before. I'll look into it! I definitely want to speak with someone at SSA before my transition date, just to have peace of mind.

I was on SSDI for 12 years before hitting FRA last June. The transition was completely seamless for me - no missed payments, no change in amount, no paperwork, nothing. Just one month I was technically on disability and the next month I was technically on retirement, but from my perspective nothing changed at all. The only difference you might notice is on your annual benefit statement where it will show as retirement instead of disability. My advice is don't worry, but if it makes you feel better, try reaching SSA about 3-4 weeks before your FRA just to confirm everything is set to transition properly.

My experience was different. When my benefit switched over from disability to retirement they DID change my payment date. I used to get paid on the 3rd and now I get it on the 2nd Wednesday. The amount stayed the same though. So the payment schedule CAN change depending on your situation.

FRA stands for Full Retirement Age. It's when you qualify for 100% of your Social Security retirement benefit. For people born 1943-1954, FRA is 66. For those born 1955-1959, it gradually increases to 67. For anyone born 1960 or later, FRA is 67. When someone on SSDI reaches their FRA, their disability benefits automatically convert to retirement benefits.

Thank you everyone for the helpful responses! I feel much better knowing this transition should be smooth. I'm going to try reaching SSA again to confirm everything, and I might try that Claimyr service if I keep having trouble getting through. I'll also double-check my direct deposit information to make sure it's current. I appreciate all your help!
