Social Security payment amount changing between application date and first payment - confused about benefit start date!

I'm totally confused about what my actual SS retirement benefit will be. Here's what happened: When I checked my SSA account on 1/31/2025, it showed my January 2025 benefit estimate as $1351. I submitted my application that night and got confirmation that my application was accepted on 1/31/25. But today when I logged in, the statement now starts with February 2025 and shows an estimated benefit of $1358 (which is $7 higher). I have two questions that are driving me crazy: 1) Since benefits are paid a month after the start date, when I actually get my first payment, will it be $1351 or $1358? Why did it change? 2) I'm also planning to suspend my benefits when I reach my FRA to get those Delayed Retirement Credits. When I do this, should I set my restart date as my birthday month or the month after? Does it make any difference? I've read so much conflicting info online and I'm worried about making a mistake that will cost me money for the rest of my life. Thanks for any help!

I can help clarify this for you. The $7 difference you're seeing is normal and related to the COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) that Social Security applies at different times. For your first question: You'll receive $1358 if February is your first benefit month. That's because January would be considered your filing month, and February would be your entitlement month, with payment coming in March. The system is now showing the updated amount that includes applicable adjustments. Regarding suspending benefits at FRA for DRCs: You should specify the month you want the suspension to BEGIN, which would be your birth month if you want to maximize the DRCs. The suspension starts with the month you request it, not the following month. Each month of suspension after FRA earns you 2/3 of 1% in additional benefits (8% per year). Does that make sense?

Thank you! That's starting to make more sense. So if I understand correctly, even though I applied in January, my first actual payment will be the $1358 amount because it's for February (paid in March)? I just want to make sure my budget is correct. And for the suspension at FRA - is there any paperwork I need to prepare now, or do I just contact them when I reach my FRA in a few years?

Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one who's seen this! Did your actual payment end up matching what was shown on the SSA website right before you received it?

I'm dealing with the EXACT same thing right now! My estimate changed by $12 between when I applied and my first payment month. Called SSA and sat on hold for 2.5 HOURS only to get disconnected!!! This system is a nightmare. I just want to know what my actual payment will be so I can plan accordingly. The website is so confusing and contradicts itself.

I had the same frustrating experience trying to call them about a similar issue last month. After multiple disconnects, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a live agent in under 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU It worked great for me - the agent was able to explain exactly why my benefit amount had changed and confirmed what my first payment would be. Saved me a ton of stress and wasted time on hold.

It's not just about the $7... it's about understanding how the system works! Some of us like to know EXACTLY what to expect. And when you're living on a fixed income, even small differences matter. Plus, if there's confusion about the small things, it makes you wonder what else might be wrong. MY SS was off by almost $200 when I first started getting it and it took MONTHS to fix!!

Let me provide some technical clarity on your questions: 1) The benefit amount difference relates to the computation date used in the estimate. Your January amount was based on earlier data, while the February amount includes the most recent calculations after your application was processed. The $1358 is your actual benefit amount for February 2025 (paid in March). January would be your application month, not a payment month. 2) For suspending benefits at FRA to earn DRCs: You need to specifically request suspension starting with your birth month if you want to maximize DRCs. There's no automatic suspension. Each full month of suspension earns you 2/3 of 1% (8% per year) up to age 70. Important: For the suspension, you need to contact SSA the month before you want the suspension to begin. You can do this online, by phone, or at an office. There's Form SSA-795 for the suspension request, but it's typically handled through direct contact with SSA. The system is showing you the correct information now - $1358 will be your benefit amount.

This is exactly what I needed to know! So my actual first payment will be $1358 in March (for February). And I need to contact them the month BEFORE I want to suspend. One last question - when I eventually restart benefits after earning DRCs, do I need to submit a new application or just notify them I want to restart? I've heard conflicting things about this.

For restarting after suspension, you don't need a new application. You simply contact SSA to request reinstatement of your benefits. This can be done by phone, in person, or online through your my Social Security account. When you request reinstatement, benefits resume the month after your request (unless you specify a future month). The amount will include all accumulated DRCs. My recommendation: Set a calendar reminder about 30 days before you want to restart. This gives SSA time to process everything so there's no gap in payments.

Thank you so much! This has been incredibly helpful. I'll definitely set that calendar reminder when the time comes. I feel much better about understanding how this all works now.
