TWC earnings reporting question - Will I still get unemployment after making more than my benefit amount?
Hey y'all, I'm super confused about how reporting earnings works with TWC. I got my first unemployment check on the 16th of this month (filed the payment request on the 14th). But here's my situation - I picked up some temporary work and made more money than what I get from unemployment. I'm scheduled to file my next payment request soon, but I'm not sure if I'll get anything. If I report that I earned more than my weekly benefit amount, will TWC still send me some money for that period? Or do I get nothing that week? Do I still need to file the payment request even if I won't get paid? Really appreciate any help!

You need to report ALL earnings for the week, even if they exceed your weekly benefit amount. When you make more than your WBA (weekly benefit amount), you won't receive a payment for that week, but you should ABSOLUTELY still file your payment request! This keeps your claim active. If you don't file, TWC might think you've abandoned your claim and you'll have to reapply all over again, which is a headache.

•Thanks for explaining! So just to be clear, I still do the whole payment request process on my scheduled day, report my earnings truthfully, and then just won't get any money that week? Will I still be eligible for benefits in future weeks when I don't make as much?

When you earn more than your weekly benefit amount, you won't receive benefits for that week, but you MUST continue filing your payment requests every two weeks to keep your claim active. As long as your claim is active and you have benefits remaining, you'll receive payments in weeks where you earn less than your WBA. Remember that Texas uses a "partial benefits" formula - if you earn some money but less than your weekly benefit amount, they'll reduce your payment accordingly.

DONT FORGET to keep doing your work search activities every week even when you're working!!! I learned this the hard way 😡 TWC doesn't automatically excuse your work search requirements just because you had temp work. I got hit with an overpayment notice because I stopped doing my 3 required job searches during weeks I was working part-time. Had to go through a whole appeal process. Such a pain!

•Oh wow, I had no idea about that! I thought if I was working I wouldn't need to do the work searches for that week. Thanks for the heads up - definitely don't want to deal with overpayment issues.

My sister went thru this exact thing last month!!! She worked a temp job for 1 week making like $200 more than her unemployment check and she still got benefits the next week when she wasn't working much. You just gotta keep requesting payments even when u make to much for a check

I've been dealing with TWC for months now and finally figured out how to navigate their system. If you need to speak with an actual agent about your specific situation (which I recommend), try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was getting nothing but busy signals for days until I found their service. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh. Got connected to a TWC rep in about 20 minutes who explained exactly how my earnings affected my benefits. WAY better than trying to figure it out from their confusing website.

•Yes, it worked for me and several people in my work group who got laid off together. The TWC agent I spoke with was able to see exactly why my payments were fluctuating with my part-time work and explained the formula they use.

youll get $0 for the week you made more money but make sure u still request payment!!! also texas has a formula where u can still get some benefits if u work part time. its ur benefit amount minus (earnings - $30 x 0.25) so u geta bit extra if ur working just a lil

Another important point: any week you don't receive benefits because of excess earnings still counts against your benefit year, but it doesn't reduce your maximum benefit amount. So you're essentially "saving" those benefits for future weeks when you might need them more. Just keep certifying honestly every two weeks and the system will calculate everything correctly.

•That's really helpful to know! So I won't lose those benefits, they'll still be there for later weeks when I might not have as much work. The TWC website doesn't explain this stuff very clearly.

i had this problem to. you gotta report earnings for the week you WORKED not the week you got paid!! that messed me up at first

•YES!! This is so important!!! TWC wants to know when you PERFORMED the work, not when you got paid for it. I got flagged for an interview because I reported earnings on the wrong week (when my check came in). They almost disqualified me over this!

One last thing to keep in mind: if you consistently earn more than your weekly benefit amount for several weeks in a row, TWC may review your claim since you appear to be fully employed. In that case, you might need to explain that your work is temporary or part-time only. But as long as you're honestly reporting your earnings and continuing to look for full-time work (and documenting your work search activities), you should be fine.

•Thanks everyone for all this great info! I'll definitely keep filing my payment requests and doing my work searches, and I'll make sure to report my earnings accurately. This temporary job is only for a few weeks anyway, so I'll probably need the unemployment again soon. Y'all have been super helpful!
