Reopening PA UC claim after 3 weeks at new job - reopen now or wait until Sunday filing?

I started a job with a new employer about a month ago and stopped filing my weekly PA UC certifications. This week I only got 12 hours of work (way below what I need). I know I need to reopen my existing unemployment claim, but I'm confused about the timing. Should I reopen my claim right now during the week and then do my weekly certification on Sunday? Or should I wait until Sunday and do both the reopening AND certification at the same time? I don't want to mess this up and delay getting benefits for this short week. Anyone been through this before?

Thanks for the quick reply! So I just wait until Sunday, select 'reopen claim' first, and then do the weekly certification right after? And I'll make sure to have my pay info ready.

You should reopen your claim as soon as possible, not wait until Sunday. The reopening process can sometimes take a day or two to process in the system before you can file weekly certifications. If you wait until Sunday to reopen, you might not be able to file for this week until the reopening is processed, which could delay your payment. Make sure to report all your earnings from the new job when you certify, and remember that Pennsylvania has a partial benefit credit where you can earn up to 30% of your weekly benefit rate without reducing your UC payment.

This is the right answer! I waited till Sunday once and it was a whole mess - couldn't file that week and had to call them to fix it. DO IT NOW.

Oh shoot, I'm glad I asked! I'll go do the reopening process right now then. Thanks for explaining about the partial benefit credit too - I didn't know about the 30% thing.

WAIT!!! This depends on when your benefit year ends!!! If your original claim is still within the benefit year (12 months from when you first applied), then yes, you need to reopen. BUT if your benefit year ended, you need to file a NEW claim completely!!!! The website won't tell you this clearly and you'll waste weeks trying to figure it out. Check your dashboard for your benefit year end date before doing ANYTHING else!!!

My benefit year definitely hasn't ended yet - I first filed about 7 months ago. But that's really good to know for the future! Thanks for pointing that out!

This is an important point. Reopening is for claims within the same benefit year. Filing a new claim is necessary if your benefit year has expired. You can see your benefit year end date on your dashboard when you log in to your PA UC account.

I got stuck in a frustrating loop trying to reach PA UC when I needed to reopen my claim after working at a temp job. Busy signals for DAYS. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - they connected me to an agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for a week with no luck. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 The agent explained that it's better to reopen ASAP during the week rather than waiting for Sunday, especially if you have any potential issues with your claim. Mine had an open issue that would have prevented filing if I'd waited.

does this claimyr thing actually work? seems sketch to me but i really need to talk to someone about my claim

@casual_commenter It definitely worked for me. I was desperate after trying to call for days. Not sketchy at all - they just connect you to the actual UC phone line but get you past the busy signals.

When reopening a PA UC claim, there are actually some timing considerations to keep in mind: 1. If you reopen mid-week, the system will ask for information about your work search activities for that week so far 2. If you reopen on Sunday, you'll need to complete both the reopening AND certification in the same session 3. If you had a new employer, make sure to have their correct information handy as the system will ask for it 4. Be prepared to answer why you're reopening (reduced hours is a valid reason) Generally, it's better to reopen as soon as you know you'll need benefits again rather than waiting. The process takes about 15-20 minutes online.

This is really helpful! I'm going to reopen today then. One quick question - for the work search activities, I was working at my job Mon-Wed this week, so I don't technically have any work search activities to report since I was employed. Will that cause an issue?

Can I just say I HATE how confusing the PA UC system is about this stuff?!? Why can't they just have CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS on their website about reopening vs. new claims and WHEN to do it? It's like they DELIBERATELY make it hard to understand!!! I nearly lost 3 weeks of benefits because of this exact situation!!

So true! I swear they design it to be confusing on purpose so fewer people get benefits. The online system is stuck in like 2005.

EXACTLY!!! And then when you call for help you can't get through anyway! It's a nightmare!!

Just wanted to update everyone - I followed the advice and reopened my claim today. The process took about 15 minutes and asked about my new employer, why I needed to reopen (reduced hours), and some questions about my work search. The system told me I can file my weekly certification on Sunday for this week. Thanks for all the helpful advice!

Great to hear! Just remember that when you certify on Sunday, be sure to accurately report all earnings for this week, even from the days you worked before reopening your claim. PA UC calculates benefits based on when you earned wages, not when you get paid.

Good luck with your certification on Sunday! Just a heads up - when you report your earnings, make sure you report the gross amount (before taxes) for all hours worked this week, including Monday-Wednesday before you reopened. The system is pretty good at calculating the partial benefits automatically once you enter the correct wage info. Hope you get your payment processed quickly!

Thanks for the tip about reporting gross earnings! I'm new to this whole partial benefits thing - do I need to report the exact hours worked each day, or just the total earnings for the week? Also, about how long does it usually take for the payment to show up after filing the weekly certification?

@Rachel Clark You just need to report the total gross earnings for the week, not a daily breakdown. PA UC keeps it simple that way. As for payment timing, if you certify on Sunday and everything processes smoothly, payments usually hit your account by Wednesday sometimes (Tuesday if you re'lucky .)If there are any issues with your claim or if they need to review something, it could take longer though.
