Can I claim PA UC for partial weeks while working casual/on-call position?

Hi everyone, I'm in a confusing situation with my employment and PA unemployment. I got laid off from my full-time job last month and started collecting UC. Then I found this casual/on-call position at a warehouse that's really unpredictable. First week they gave me 40 hours (which was great), but my supervisor already warned me some weeks I might only get 2-3 days or even nothing if they're slow. They also don't offer holiday pay or any benefits. I'm confused about how to handle my UC claims now. When I certified after my full 40-hour week, the system said I earned too much and would need to reopen my claim if I wanted benefits later. But now I'm worried - do I need to reopen the claim every time I have a slow week? Will I mess up my benefits if I don't certify during full weeks? I've never dealt with this partial employment situation before. Does anyone know the right procedure here? Can I even collect partial UC for weeks when they only give me 1-2 days of work?

Yes, you can absolutely claim partial unemployment for weeks when you work less than full-time. This is actually a pretty common situation, especially with seasonal or on-call work. Here's what you need to do: 1. You'll need to reopen your claim since it got automatically closed after your full-time week 2. After reopening, certify EVERY week, even when you work full weeks 3. When you certify, report all earnings honestly for that week 4. PA UC will calculate if you're eligible for partial benefits based on what you earned Basically, if you earn less than your weekly benefit rate plus the partial benefit credit (about 30% of your weekly benefit), you'll get some partial UC for that week. The system won't penalize you for weeks you work full-time - you'll just get $0 for those weeks, but your claim stays active as long as you keep certifying.

Thank you so much! I didn't realize I should be certifying even for full weeks. So I need to reopen my claim now and just keep certifying weekly no matter what? I was worried about doing something wrong and getting hit with an overpayment later.

i had the same thing happen when i was working at the hotel. some weeks full hours some weeks barely any. just certify every week no matter what and report exactly what u earned. the system figures it out for u. don't worry about the reopen thing, just do it once and then keep certifying

Thanks for sharing your experience! That makes me feel better knowing someone else dealt with this. Did you ever have any issues with the system calculating your partial benefits when you had varying hours?

The previous answers are not entirely accurate. I work in employment services and deal with this regularly. Here's what you need to know: - You DO need to reopen your claim after any full-time week - You MUST report gross earnings (before taxes) not net pay - PA has a specific formula: If you earn more than your weekly benefit rate + the partial benefit credit (PBC), you get $0 that week - You need to be available for full-time work while collecting any benefits - You still need to complete your weekly work search activities (usually applying to 2 jobs and doing 1 work search activity) even during weeks you work part-time Don't just assume the system "figures it out" - you need to be careful about reopening claims properly after full weeks of work.

The system works differently depending on how you report your earnings. If you report earnings that exceed your WBR+PBC for one week, some people's claims remain active while others get the message to reopen. It depends on several factors including your specific benefit type and how the earnings were reported. The safest approach is always to continue certifying weekly regardless.

When I had this exact situation last year, I got totally confused too! Called the UC office about 50 times before finally getting through (took DAYS). The rep told me I should just reopen my claim after any full-time week, then keep certifying. The important part is you have to complete your work search requirements EVEN during weeks you work full time if you want to keep your claim active. Oh, and if you're struggling to get through to a UC rep to ask specific questions about your situation, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to PA unemployment in about 15 minutes instead of spending days redialing. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. Their website is claimyr.com - saved me so much frustration when I needed to get specific answers about my partial benefits.

I've been trying to call UC for days with no luck! I'll check out that service - at this point I just need to talk to someone directly about my specific situation. Thanks for the recommendation.

It worked for me. I spent literally 3 days trying to get through myself and kept getting busy signals or disconnected. With Claimyr I got through in about 20 minutes. Worth it for me since I needed an answer about my partial benefits calculation that was costing me money each week it wasn't resolved.

THE UC SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO CONFUSE YOU!! They make it complicated on purpose so people give up and don't collect what they're owed! I had a similar job situation and got hit with an "overpayment" notice 6 months later because they said I should have reopened my claim after each full-time week even though their own website doesn't explain this clearly ANYWHERE!!! Fought it for months and still had to pay back $1400. The whole system is a JOKE.

While I understand your frustration, it's important to note that the UC system isn't intentionally designed to confuse people. It's just a complex system with rules that need to be followed carefully. The OP should make sure to document all communications with UC and keep records of all earnings reported. This will protect them if there are any questions later about their claim.

Easy for you to say! Try dealing with their broken website and impossible phone system when you're trying to feed your family! They make "mistakes" that always seem to benefit them not us!

my cousin was in this situation and he just stopped certifying when he had full weeks and then opened a new claim wheneve he had a slow week seems like to much hassle to certify every single week when ur not getting nothing anyways

This is absolutely NOT the correct procedure and could result in claims being denied. Each time you stop certifying and then try to reopen, there's a potential delay in benefits and additional scrutiny. The proper procedure is to continue certifying every week regardless of earnings. Please don't follow this advice as it could jeopardize your benefits.

To sum things up for you since there's some conflicting information here: 1. Yes, reopen your claim now since it was closed after your full-time week 2. After reopening, certify EVERY week going forward regardless of hours worked 3. Report all gross earnings accurately each week 4. Continue completing your work search requirements every week (2 job applications + 1 work search activity) 5. For weeks you earn over your benefit amount + PBC, you'll receive $0 but your claim stays active 6. You won't need to reopen your claim again as long as you keep certifying weekly This approach ensures your claim stays active during fluctuating work schedules and you'll receive partial benefits for eligible weeks automatically.

Thank you for this clear summary! This makes much more sense now. I'll reopen my claim today and make sure to certify every single week going forward regardless of my hours. And I'll definitely keep up with the work search requirements too.
