PA UC review status after reopening claim + what happens after BYE date?

Lost my warehouse job last week (budget cuts) and reopened my inactive claim on Monday since I had been working for only about 2 months after my previous layoff. Now my PA UC claim is showing 'in review' status already. Anyone know how long this review typically takes? It feels fast compared to last time when I waited forever. Also, my Benefit Year End date is 1/8/2025 which is coming up soon. What happens after my BYE date passes? Do I need to file a completely new claim or does something automatic happen? Really stressed about this timing since I've got rent due and am not sure if there will be a gap in payments.

review status can take like 1-3 weeks depending how busy they are. my claim was in review for 9 days last month but my coworker waited almost 3 weeks. theyre probably fast tracking you bc you had a recent claim.

9 days doesn't sound too bad. Did you get all your payments on time after the review was done or was there a delay?

When your BYE date hits on January 8th, you'll need to file a new application. The system won't automatically renew your claim. In fact, your current claim will be completely inactive after the BYE date regardless of any remaining balance. Make sure to file the new application on or right after January 8th to minimize any gap in payments. As for the review status, it's typically faster for reopened claims than brand new ones. You should see movement within 7-10 business days as long as there are no discrepancies with your employer's information.

NO THIS IS WRONG!! I just went through this! You CAN'T file a new claim until after your last payment from the current benefit year!! If you try to file too early the system will reject it and then you're stuck in limbo for weeks!!! Happened to me and I couldn't get through to anyone for THREE WEEKS!!!

glad youre asking this now instead of waiting til the last minute! makes things so much easier.

Let me clarify about the BYE date process since there seems to be some confusion. You can file a new application after your BYE date (1/8/2025), but you should wait until you've claimed all eligible weeks on your current benefit year first. If you file a new application too early, it could indeed create problems. Regarding the review status: A reopened claim typically takes 5-10 business days to process if there are no issues. Since you only worked for about 2 months since your last claim, they'll need to verify your new employment details with your employer, which is standard procedure. If you need to speak with someone about the status, you might want to try Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they can get you connected to a PA UC representative usually within an hour. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 I used them when my claim was stuck in review for weeks and got it resolved in one phone call.

Thank you for the clear explanation! I'll definitely wait until after my BYE date and after I've claimed all eligible weeks. That service sounds helpful - I'll keep it in mind if my review status doesn't change in the next week.

The PA UC system is RIDICULOUS with these review periods!! Last time I was laid off it took them 6 WEEKS to "review" my claim even though I had all my documentation perfect!!! And good luck trying to call them - I spent HOURS EVERY DAY for THREE WEEKS trying to get through!!! And the BYE date transition is even WORSE!! They DELIBERATELY make it confusing so people mess up and lose benefits. The whole system is designed to prevent people from getting what they're entitled to!!!

I had the opposite experience. My review only took 4 days last time and everyone I talked to was super helpful. Maybe it depends on which office handles your claim?

When you say "reopened" your claim, did you actually use the reopen option or did you file a new claim by mistake? Because if you filed a new claim when you should have reopened, you might get stuck in limbo for weeks while they sort it out. This happened to my husband and it was a NIGHTMARE getting it fixed. And about the BYE date - do you know how many weeks of benefits you have left on your current claim? That makes a big difference in how to handle the transition.

I definitely used the reopen option, not a new claim. I still had the old claim showing in my portal as inactive, and clicked the option to reopen it. I think I have about 8 weeks of benefits left on my current claim, but my BYE date is in about 2 weeks, so I'm confused about whether I'll actually get those remaining weeks.

To clarify on the weeks remaining vs. BYE date question: You can still collect the remaining weeks on your claim AFTER your BYE date passes, as long as you file for those weeks properly. Here's what will happen: 1. Continue filing your weekly certifications as normal, even after your BYE date passes 2. You can collect any remaining benefits from your current benefit year 3. Once you've exhausted those benefits (or if a certain amount of time passes), THEN you'll file a new claim The review status should resolve soon for a reopened claim. They typically prioritize these since they already have most of your information in the system.

this happened to my brother too last year. he kept filing after bye date and got all his remaining weeks no problem.

I had a reopened claim last year and it was super quick. like 3 days and i was approved. but my sister had the same thing and hers took 2.5 weeks. i think it just depends on how backed up they are when you file. january is probably busy bc of all the seasonal layoffs after the holidays.

Update: My claim was approved! Only took 4 business days to go from 'in review' to 'active' status. Thanks everyone for the help. I'll keep filing my weekly claims even after my BYE date until I've used up my remaining weeks, and then file a new claim.

Great news! That's much faster than average. Make sure you keep doing your work search activities and documenting them correctly - they often verify those during the transition between benefit years.

Congrats on getting approved so quickly! That's really encouraging news. I'm in a similar situation right now - just reopened my claim after a brief return to work and it's been in review for 6 days. Seeing that yours only took 4 business days gives me hope mine will move soon too. The timing around BYE dates is so confusing but sounds like you've got a good plan now.
