PA UC payment sent to closed bank account - how long for paper check to arrive?

I'm seriously stressing out about my unemployment benefits right now. PA UC just processed my payment but sent it to my old PNC account that I closed 2 months ago! I tried setting up direct deposit to my Chime account, but when I called the UC service center, they told me Chime is on some 'fraud prevention list' so they couldn't deposit to it (nobody mentioned this when I entered the info online!). I went to PNC today and they confirmed the deposit was rejected and said it would be sent back to Treasury by end of business today. Then I called Treasury who said once they receive the returned funds, they'll mail a paper check tomorrow. Has anyone gone through this mess before? How long did it take to get your paper check after the direct deposit was returned? I've got rent due next week and I'm getting really anxious about the timing. Does PA actually mail checks quickly or should I expect another 2-week wait?

This happened to me back in January. The check took about 7 business days to arrive after the bank returned the funds. The Treasury dept is actually pretty good about getting these out quickly once they get the money back. Make sure you have your correct mailing address on file with UC though - double check it on your dashboard!

Thanks for the info! Just checked my address and it's correct. Did Treasury send you any kind of notification when they mailed the check or did it just show up?

Yes, PA UC has been blocking several online banks for direct deposit. Chime, Cash App, and a few others are on their list. They don't advertise this anywhere which is super frustrating. Best to use a traditional bank account if you have one.

They ALWAYS do this!!!! The system is DESIGNED to delay payments and make life IMPOSSIBLE for people who actually need the money. My payment got sent to my closed Wells Fargo account last year even though I SPECIFICALLY updated my banking info three times!!! When I finally got the check it was for the WRONG AMOUNT and I had to spend 6 WEEKS getting it fixed!!!! The UC system is broken and nobody cares about fixing it!!!!

That sounds awful! Did you ever figure out why they kept ignoring your updated banking info? I'm worried they might do the same thing with my next payment.

I went through exactly this in February. Paper check took 9 days total from when the bank rejected the deposit. One thing to know - your UC payment history will still show the payment as "paid" with the original date even though you haven't received it yet. This freaked me out because I thought maybe someone else got my money! But that's just how their system works. The check will come eventually. Also, have you tried setting up the PA ReliaCard instead of direct deposit? That's what I switched to after the bank account mess, and it's been working smoothly. The card arrives in about 7-10 days, and then all payments go directly on there.

Yep ReliaCard was what saved me too. Stupid fees on it tho

I had something similar with my benefits going to a TD account I closed. Took forever to sort out! Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to someone at UC? I was stuck on hold for days before I found their service at claimyr.com - got me through to a real person who could actually see what was happening with my returned payment. They have a video of how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 Totally worth it because the rep was able to put notes on my account to expedite the check once the funds were returned.

I haven't heard of Claimyr before. I'll check it out if my check doesn't arrive soon. Did they give you any tracking info for the paper check or just expedite it?

When a direct deposit is returned to the PA Treasury from a closed account, they typically process the paper check within 1-2 business days of receiving the returned funds. The mailing time is usually 3-5 business days depending on your location in the state. In total, most people receive their checks within 5-8 business days from when the bank rejects the deposit. A few tips to speed things up: 1. Call Treasury (not UC) every few days to check if they've processed the check 2. Make sure your mailing address is current in both the Treasury system and UC system (they're separate) 3. For future payments, consider the PA ReliaCard option instead of direct deposit 4. If you absolutely need direct deposit, use only traditional banks - PNC, Wells Fargo, Citizens, etc. The restriction on online banks like Chime is unfortunate but has been in place since early 2023 due to increased fraud targeting those institutions.

This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't realize Treasury and UC have separate address systems. I'll definitely call Treasury in a few days if I don't see anything by then. Do you know if there's a way to check the status of the check online, or is calling the only option?

wait so u cant use ANY online banks for PA UC??? what about Ally?

It's not all online banks. It's specifically banks that have had high fraud rates with unemployment benefits. Ally should work fine for direct deposit. Chime, Current, and a few others are the main ones with restrictions.

One more thing I forgot to mention - when you do get your check, take a photo of it before depositing just in case there are any issues. I had a problem where my bank put a 10-day hold on my UC check (apparently they do this with government checks sometimes), and having that photo helped when I needed to follow up.

That's a really good idea, I wouldn't have thought of that. I'll definitely take photos of everything going forward.

My brother had this EXACT situation in March and is STILL fighting with them about it!!! They claim they mailed the check but he never got it, and now they're saying it was cashed by someone else and he has to file a fraud claim with Treasury!!! The whole system is a nightmare!!!

That sounds like mail theft, which has been happening a lot with government checks. Tell your brother to file a report with the postal inspector too - they take mail theft of government checks very seriously.

I'm dealing with something similar right now - had my payment sent to a closed Chase account about 2 weeks ago. The bank returned it pretty quickly, but I'm still waiting for the paper check to arrive. I called Treasury yesterday and they said it was mailed 5 days ago, so hopefully it shows up soon. One thing I learned is that you can call Treasury directly at 717-787-7400 and they can tell you the exact date they mailed your check. The UC customer service reps don't have access to that info, which is why they just give you general timelines. Also, make sure to check with your local post office if it doesn't arrive when expected - sometimes these government checks get held up there for extra verification. Good luck with your rent situation! The waiting is definitely stressful when you have bills due.

Thanks for that Treasury phone number! I didn't know they could give you the exact mailing date - that's way more helpful than the vague timelines UC gives. I'll definitely call them if my check doesn't show up by early next week. The post office tip is good too, I hadn't thought about them holding government checks for verification. Really hoping this all gets sorted before my rent is due!

Just went through this exact situation last month! My payment got sent to a closed Bank of America account and I was panicking about my bills too. The paper check took exactly 8 business days from when the bank rejected the deposit. A couple things that helped me stay sane during the wait: First, I set up informed delivery with USPS so I could see when the check was coming in my daily mail preview. Second, I called Treasury (not UC) on day 6 to confirm it had been mailed - they were super helpful and gave me the exact date it went out. For your rent situation, if you're cutting it close, consider reaching out to your landlord to explain the delay. Mine was understanding when I showed them the UC payment confirmation showing the money was processed, just delayed due to the bank issue. Hang in there - the check will come! And definitely switch to ReliaCard or a traditional bank for future payments to avoid this headache again.

This is really reassuring to hear! I just signed up for informed delivery after reading your suggestion - that's such a smart idea to track when it's actually coming. I'm definitely going to call Treasury if I don't see it by early next week. And you're right about talking to my landlord - I should probably give them a heads up now rather than wait until the last minute. Thanks for sharing your experience, it really helps to know the 8 business day timeline from someone who actually went through this!

I went through this exact same nightmare about 6 months ago with a closed Wells Fargo account! The stress is real when you have bills coming up. In my case, it took 9 business days total from when the bank returned the funds to when I got the paper check in my mailbox. What really helped me was calling Treasury directly (not UC) after about a week to confirm they had processed the check. They were able to tell me the exact date it was mailed, which gave me peace of mind. Also, definitely set up USPS Informed Delivery if you haven't already - you'll get an email every morning showing what mail is coming that day, so you'll know when to expect the check. For future payments, I switched to the ReliaCard after that mess and it's been smooth sailing ever since. Yes, there are some fees, but it's way better than dealing with returned deposits and paper check delays. Hang in there - your check is coming!
