PA UC claim stuck in review for 4 weeks despite submitting termination letter - what else is needed?

I was let go from my restaurant management job last month and filed for unemployment right away. It's been nearly 4 weeks now and my claim is still showing 'under review' even though my dashboard says I'm eligible for $580/week. I uploaded my termination letter right after filing and registered with PA CareerLink as required (even uploaded my resume there). The wait is making me super anxious because rent is coming due again! Has anyone experienced this long review period? Is there something else I'm supposed to be doing that I missed? I've been filing my weekly claims but nothing has been paid out yet. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks for responding! That's reassuring to hear you eventually got approved. Did you have to do anything special to push it along? I'm getting really worried about making ends meet while waiting.

Have you checked your dashboard for any 'open issues' that might be holding up your claim? Sometimes there are specific items they need clarification on, but they don't always communicate this clearly. Also, make sure you're completing the work search activities each week (applying to at least 2 jobs and doing 1 work search activity). Those need to be documented when you file your weekly claims or you could be disqualified.

I checked and there's nothing labeled as an 'open issue' on my dashboard. And yes, I've been doing the required job searches each week (actually more than the minimum) and documenting them with my weekly claims. It just seems to be stuck in this review limbo for some reason.

OMG I'm going through THE EXACT SAME THING right now!!! Been waiting 5 weeks already!!! Did they send you an eligibility determination letter in the mail yet?? I got one saying I'm eligible but still no money and online it still says under review?!? This is so confusing and I'm freaking out because I have bills due TOMORROW and can't get through to anyone on the phone!!!! 😫

That's actually normal. The monetary eligibility determination just means you have enough qualifying wages to receive benefits. They still need to review the reason for separation (termination in this case) before releasing payments. If you have a non-fault separation, you should eventually be approved.

The PA UC system is DESIGNED to make you give up! They hope you'll just stop filing and go away. That's why they make everything so complicated and take forever to process claims. I had to wait 8 weeks last year before mine was approved, and I know people who waited even longer. The whole system is a joke.

This!!!! 💯 They count on people giving up. NEVER stop filing your weekly claims no matter how long it takes!!!

After dealing with exactly this situation last year, I finally found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual human at PA UC. I was stuck in review for 5 weeks with no explanation, and getting through on the phone was impossible. Claimyr got me connected with an agent who found that there was an employer response issue that needed to be resolved. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 Their website is claimyr.com - it saved me weeks of waiting because the agent was able to expedite my claim once I explained the financial hardship.

Thank you for suggesting this! I've been trying to call for days and just get busy signals or disconnected. I'll check out that video demo. At this point, I just need to speak to someone who can tell me what's going on with my claim.

I'm always skeptical of these "services" but honestly anything is better than the PA UC phone system. I spent THREE DAYS hitting redial before I got through last time.

In cases of termination, PA UC typically contacts your former employer to verify the reason for separation. This step often causes delays, especially if: 1. Your employer is slow to respond or disputes the termination reason 2. There are discrepancies between your stated reason and employer's response 3. They need additional documentation about circumstances You mentioned you provided a termination letter, which is good. However, if your employer contests anything or classifies it as misconduct rather than a layoff, that can trigger a longer review process. My recommendation is to: 1. Continue filing weekly claims 2. Try contacting your local state representative's office - they often have direct lines to UC and can help 3. Check your mail and email frequently for any requests for additional information 4. If you can reach UC by phone, request a status update and ask if there's any additional information they need The system is unfortunately backlogged, but claims involving termination almost always take longer than straightforward layoffs.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation! I didn't realize my former employer's response could be holding things up. I left on good terms (they eliminated my position due to budget cuts), but who knows if they've even responded to UC yet. I'll try contacting my state rep's office tomorrow - that's a great suggestion I hadn't thought of.

Back in January my claim was under review for 5 weeks and then suddenly got approved without me doing anything special. But my brother-in-law had his stuck for 9 weeks and finally had to contact his state representative to get it fixed. Turns out his employer never responded to UC's inquiry about his termination, and the rep's office was able to expedite things. So might be worth a try if you're getting desperate!

That's really helpful to know! I'm going to give it another week and then contact my rep if nothing changes. It's so frustrating that there's no status update other than just 'under review' with no explanation of what's being reviewed or what's causing the delay.

One more thing to check - have you completed the ID.me verification process? Starting in 2025, PA UC requires this additional identity verification step for all claimants. If you haven't done this yet, your payments will be held up regardless of eligibility. You should have received an email about this, but sometimes they go to spam folders.

Yes, I did complete the ID.me verification when I first filed. It was actually one of the first things they had me do before I could even submit my initial claim. That part seemed to go through without any issues.

Good! Then it sounds like you've done everything correctly on your end. Unfortunately, these delays are just part of the PA UC process, especially with termination cases where they need to verify details with the employer. Keep filing those weekly claims and hopefully you'll see movement soon.
