PA UC check rejected at bank - urgent help needed
My boyfriend finally got his unemployment benefits through a paper check yesterday after waiting 5 weeks. He was so relieved but when he tried to cash it at PNC bank this morning, they said they couldn't accept it! No explanation given except something about 'verification issues.' Has this happened to anyone else with PA UC checks? The teller suggested trying Walmart but we're worried it'll get rejected there too. He needs this money for rent by Monday and we're panicking. Called the UC number like 30 times today but can't get through to anyone. Any advice would be REALLY appreciated!

•Thanks! The check says Treasury on it but doesn't list a specific bank. Do you know which bank handles PA Treasury checks?

OMG I had this EXACT problem in January!!! The issue might be that he needs to endorse it properly. PA UC checks now require you to write your full SSN under your signature when you endorse - did he do that? The cashier at my bank was super unhelpful and didn't even tell me this was the problem until I asked like 5 times what was wrong. Also bring his ID and maybe even the UC award letter if you have it.

•I don't think he wrote his SSN! Just signed it. That might be it!! Thank you so much, we'll try again tomorrow with the proper endorsement.

There are a few potential reasons for this situation: 1. Improper endorsement - as mentioned, you need full signature plus SSN 2. ID verification issues - he'll need photo ID that matches the name exactly 3. The bank's policy on government checks (some have limits) 4. Possible stop payment or verification hold (rare but happens) Your best options are: 1. Try cashing at a PA Treasury-approved check cashing location (list on their website) 2. Your boyfriend's own bank will be more likely to cash it if he has an account 3. Try grocery stores with check cashing services (Giant Eagle often handles these) Also, for future payments, consider switching to direct deposit in your UC portal - much more reliable than paper checks.

•Thank you for all the detailed info! He doesn't have a bank account right now (long story) which is why we got the paper check. Definitely going to try those check cashing places you mentioned.

I helped many people with this same issue. One thing nobody mentioned yet is that PA Treasury checks have security features that some banks aren't familiar with. The micro-printing and watermarks look different from regular checks. If the bank teller is inexperienced, they might reject it thinking it's suspicious. Also, there's been a new verification process since January 2025 where some checks require a phone verification before cashing. The UC office is supposed to call or text before sending the check, but they often don't. If you need to speak with someone at UC to resolve this, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). They helped me get through to an actual human at PA UC when I couldn't get past the busy signals for weeks. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. It saved me so much frustration when I had a similar issue with my benefits.

•is claimyr legit? seems weird that u have to pay to talk to unemployment when its our tax money paying for the system anyway lol

@TiredOfTheSystem It's definitely legit - I was skeptical too but when you've been trying to reach someone for weeks and your bills are due, it becomes worth it. I see it as paying to save hours of frustration. But totally get your point about it being a shame we need to pay to access a government service!

•Thank you for suggesting this. I'm going to try the endorsement fix and check cashing places first, but if those don't work we might try that service. At this point we're desperate enough to try anything.

EVERYBODY LISTEN UP!! The PA unemployment system is BROKEN and this is just another example!!!! I had 4 different checks last year that I couldn't cash and had to jump through hoops to get resolved. The state knows this is happening and doesn't fix it. They WANT it to be difficult so people give up. Call your state rep's office - seriously, that's the only thing that worked for me. The UC office magically fixed my issue 2 days after my rep called them.

•this sounds like good advice actually. my cousin works for a state rep and she says they help with UC problems all the time

Something nobody mentioned - check the date on the check! PA UC checks expire after 180 days (unlike regular checks that are good for a year). Also, sometimes they date them for a future date by mistake (I know, makes no sense). If the date is wrong or it's more than 6 months old, that could be why it was rejected.

•Just checked - the date is fine, it's from last week. But good to know about the 180 day expiration, I had no idea they expired faster than regular checks!

•Update! We went to Money Services at the Giant Eagle and it worked!! He had to endorse with his SSN like you suggested, plus pay a $5 fee, but we have the money now. SUCH a relief! Thanks everyone for your help!! For anyone with this issue in the future: try grocery store check cashing services!

So glad you got it resolved!! That's awesome news. I've been dealing with PA UC issues for months and this thread is honestly the most helpful info I've seen anywhere. Definitely saving this for future reference. The Giant Eagle tip is gold - never would have thought to try there. Hope your boyfriend can get direct deposit set up for future payments so you don't have to go through this stress again!

•This whole thread has been incredibly helpful! As someone new to dealing with PA unemployment, I had no idea about things like the SSN endorsement requirement or the 180-day expiration. It's frustrating that the system is so confusing and the UC office is so hard to reach, but at least we have communities like this to help each other out. Definitely going to bookmark this for future reference too. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and solutions!

This is such a great success story and really shows how helpful this community can be! I'm dealing with my first UC claim right now and honestly had no idea about most of these requirements - the SSN endorsement thing especially seems like something they should tell you upfront. It's crazy that we have to figure this stuff out through trial and error and community help. Really appreciate everyone sharing their knowledge here. Going to make sure I have all this info ready if I ever need to cash a paper check. The Giant Eagle solution is brilliant - who knew grocery stores were better at handling government checks than actual banks sometimes!
