Won my ny unemployment case but payments sent to debit card instead of direct deposit - how long to get card?

Finally got my unemployment case resolved after a 14 week battle with my previous employer. I had requested direct deposit when I filed my claim in August, but I just found out that all my payments (almost $5,800) were sent to a debit card instead of my bank account. I called the ny unemployment office yesterday and the rep told me the card was mailed out on November 17th. It's been over two weeks and I still haven't received anything in the mail. Getting really anxious because that's a lot of money floating around somewhere. Has anyone else had this happen? How long did it take for your card to arrive?

Mine took about 8 days to arrive but that was back in July. I've heard the mail has been really slow lately. If it doesn't show up in another week, definitely call again and ask them to cancel that card and issue a new one. Also check that they have your correct mailing address on file!

Thanks for the info. I double checked my address with them and it's correct. I'm just nervous because its almost $6k and I've been waiting so long already 😩

They can definitely cancel and reissue. I had to do this when mine never showed up. Just be prepared to wait on hold for like 3 hours lol

After months of not being able to get through to anyone at unemployment, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me talking to a real person at ny unemployment in less than an hour. Told them about my missing card and they expedited a new one to me that arrived in 3 days. Best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly. They have a tutorial video too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? I've been trying to get through for weeks about my missing payments

100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but was desperate after calling 60+ times myself. The service just connects you with an actual agent instead of waiting on hold forever.

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this besides this random account? 🤔

I tried it last month when my claim was stuck in pending. Got through to someone who fixed it on the spot. Better than wasting hours redailing.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol... though tbh anything's better than the NYSDOL phone tree hell

My card took exactly 10 days to arrive but I think it depends on where you live. I'm in Buffalo so it may be different if ur in the city or somewhere else. Def worth calling again if it doesn't show up soon.

The same thing happened to me! I specifically selected direct deposit and they still sent me a card. When I called they said there was a "glitch in the system" that defaulted some accounts back to debit cards. It took 12 days for mine to come and then another 5 days to transfer the $ to my actual bank. So annoying.

Exactly what they told me! Something about a system update that reset preferences. So frustrating

me three! happened back in september. i swear they do this on purpose to delay paying us 🙄

U should call and report it missing if its been more than 7-10 business days. They can put a rush on a replacement. Also when u get it make sure u transfer all the money off right away because those cards have fees if u leave the money sitting there too long.

I've been through this whole process 3 times now (thanks seasonal work 🙃). Here's what you need to know: First, yes it takes 7-10 business days usually for the card to arrive, but sometimes longer during busy periods. If it's been more than 14 calendar days, definitely call to check status. Second, when you DO get the card, activate it immediately and check the balance to make sure all your backpay is there. Take screenshots of everything. Third, you have options once you get the card: you can use it like a regular debit card (there are NO fees for purchases), you can withdraw cash at certain ATMs with no fee (check their website for locations), OR you can transfer the entire balance to your bank account. For fastest service when calling about missing cards, try early morning (7:30am) or late afternoon (4:00pm) calls. And if you can't get through, seriously consider using claimyr.com - I wasted 3 days trying to get through myself before using them, and got connected in 45 minutes. Good luck!

Do you know if there's a limit to how much you can transfer to your bank at once? I have about 9k in backpay coming.

I think there's a daily limit of $5k for transfers, but you can just do it over two days. Just make sure you set up the transfer through the card website, not through your bank's pull system.

Thank you so much for all this info. Super helpful!

bruh the NY unemployment system is such a joke. they make everything complicated on purpose i swear 🤦‍♂️

0 coins

For real! And then they wonder why people get frustrated and give up. The whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

facts. took me 11 weeks to get my first payment and then when I finally got paid they only gave me half of what I was owed 🤡

honestly tho, I worked for a state agency (not unemployment) and their systems are so ancient they literally can't handle modern processes. some of their software is from like 1992 no joke

Check ur informed delivery from USPS if u have that set up. Sometimes u can see if the card is coming that day.

My card was supposedly mailed on Oct 12 and never arrived. I waited 3 weeks then called. They canceled it and sent a new one which came in 8 days. I would definitely call again and report it as never received at this point.

0 coins

Thanks, I'm definitely calling tomorrow. Did they charge you any fee for replacing the card?

0 coins

Nope, no charge for the first replacement. They said they only charge if it happens multiple times.

There's been a TON of mail theft lately especially with those unemployment cards because thieves know there's money on them. If you don't get it soon call and report it stolen not just missing.

I got tired of trying to reach ny unemployment for two weeks and used claimyr.com to connect with an agent. Had my issue resolved in minutes and my card was expedited. Got it in 2 business days after that.

Hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

0 coins

They don't actually handle your claim or anything - they just connect you with the actual unemployment office. It's like paying someone to wait on hold for you then they call you when an agent is on the line.

0 coins

I used them too a few weeks ago! My back payments were stuck in pending for months and a five minute convo with an agent fixed everything. Wish I'd known about it sooner tbh

Side note - when you DO get the card be careful when activating it. Make sure your on the official KeyBank site (should start with key.com). There are scam sites that look identical.

Mine never came and i found out someone stole it from my mailbox and drained it 😭 Had to file a police report and everything. Took 2 months to get my money back.

0 coins

Omg that's my worst nightmare right now! Did they eventually replace all the funds?

0 coins

Yes after filing police report and tons of paperwork they refunded everything. But it was a huge headache and I was broke meanwhile.

This happened to my neighbor too! Now I get everything direct deposited or I use a PO Box.

congrats on winning ur case! 14 weeks is crazy long. my employer tried to fight my claim too saying i quit but i had proof i was laid off. keybank cards usually take 7-10 business days but can be slower around holidays
