Why did unemployment rise in NY - NYS Department of Labor claim approved but benefits delayed
Filed my unemployment claim in early December and it was approved within a week, but I'm seeing news about unemployment rates rising and wondering if that's affecting benefit payments? My weekly claims show as processed but payments are taking 5-7 days instead of the usual 2-3. Is NYS Department of Labor dealing with higher claim volumes because of the rising unemployment? Just trying to understand if this is normal or if something's going on with the system.

Rising unemployment rates can definitely impact processing times at NYS Department of Labor. When more people file claims, it creates bottlenecks in the payment system even for already-approved claims. The 5-7 day delay you're seeing is likely related to increased volume. Your benefits should still come through - just takes longer to process the payments.

•Thanks, that makes sense. Just wanted to make sure my claim wasn't getting flagged for review or something.

Same thing happening here! My payments used to hit on Tuesday mornings like clockwork, now they're coming Thursday or Friday. NYS Department of Labor must be swamped. At least we're still getting paid, just have to adjust when I pay bills.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to check on payment status, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an agent when the phone lines were jammed. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really saved me when I needed to verify my payment delay wasn't due to an issue with my claim.

•Interesting, might check that out if my next payment doesn't come through on time. Thanks for sharing!

The whole system is a mess when unemployment spikes. Last time this happened in 2020 people waited months for payments. At least now it's just a few extra days instead of weeks or months.
