Who tracks unemployment benefits in NY - confused about which agency handles what
I'm getting mixed up about who actually tracks unemployment in New York. I know I file my weekly claims through the NYS Department of Labor website, but then I see references to other agencies and I'm not sure who's responsible for what. Like when I look at my claim history, is that all tracked by NYS Department of Labor? And if I have issues with my benefits, who am I supposed to contact? I've been getting conflicting information and just want to make sure I'm dealing with the right people for my UI claim.

The NYS Department of Labor is the main agency that handles all unemployment insurance in New York State. They track your claim status, weekly certifications, job search requirements, and benefit payments. When you file online at my.ny.gov, that's going directly to NYS Department of Labor systems. If you need to contact someone about your claim, it's always going to be NYS Department of Labor.

•Thanks! So if I'm having trouble with my weekly claim not showing up, that's definitely a NYS Department of Labor issue then?

yeah its all NYS Department of Labor, they keep track of everything - your work history, how much you earned, when you file your weekly claims, all of it. the confusion might be because some other agencies help with job placement stuff but for the actual unemployment benefits its just NYS Department of Labor

I was confused about this too when I first started filing. NYS Department of Labor maintains your entire unemployment record - from when you first apply through every weekly certification you submit. They also track your job search activities if you're required to do those. The only time other agencies might get involved is if you're in special programs, but for regular UI it's all NYS Department of Labor tracking.

•What do you mean by special programs? I'm on regular unemployment but wondering if there's other stuff I should know about.

Just dealt with this exact question last month! I couldn't get through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone to check who was tracking my claim status. After days of busy signals, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to a real NYS Department of Labor agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me so much time and frustration - was able to confirm that yes, NYS Department of Labor tracks everything related to your unemployment claim.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Did they actually get you through to someone who could answer questions about claim tracking?

•Yeah, they connected me to an actual NYS Department of Labor representative who confirmed my claim was being tracked properly and explained exactly what information they maintain in their system.

The whole tracking system is SO confusing when you're new to this. I kept thinking maybe the federal government was involved too but nope, it's just NYS Department of Labor handling everything for New York unemployment claims. They track your eligibility, your weekly certifications, your benefit amounts, EVERYTHING.
