What does the NYS Department of Labor unemployment office actually do besides process claims?
I've been dealing with unemployment for the first time and honestly I'm confused about what the unemployment office actually does beyond just sending out checks. Like I know they process claims but what else? Do they help with job searching? Are they supposed to provide training? I keep seeing references to different services but nobody explains what they actually offer. My cousin mentioned something about Workforce One but I have no idea what that is. Can someone break down what services are actually available through NYS Department of Labor?

The NYS Department of Labor unemployment office handles way more than just benefit payments. They process initial claims, conduct adjudication when there are issues, manage job search requirements, provide career counseling services, offer skills training programs, and maintain job placement resources. They also handle appeals, overpayment collections, and coordinate with employers for verification. Workforce One is their career center program that provides job search assistance, resume help, and training opportunities.

•Thanks! So if I need help with my resume or finding training programs, I should contact them directly? How do I access these services?

•The job search requirements are federal mandates, not something NYS Department of Labor created to annoy you. You need to log 3 work search activities per week to maintain eligibility. They do offer legitimate job placement services if you actually use them.

I had no idea they offered training programs! I've been struggling to get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor to ask about this stuff. The phone lines are always busy and when I do get through they just hang up on me. Has anyone found a better way to reach them?

•I had the same problem for weeks trying to get information about their services. Then I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps you get through to actual NYS Department of Labor agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was able to speak with someone within a few hours and got all my questions answered about their career services.

•That sounds too good to be true but I'm desperate at this point. Did they actually help you connect or is it just another scam?

•No it's legit. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Much better than spending hours on hold just to get disconnected.

Beyond claims processing, they maintain the state job bank, conduct labor market research, investigate benefit fraud, provide employer services for hiring, and manage federal grant programs for workforce development. They're also responsible for UI tax collection from employers and maintaining employment statistics.
