What are the benefits of unemployment insurance through NYS Department of Labor?
I just lost my job after working for 8 years at a manufacturing company and I'm wondering what kind of benefits I can actually get through NYS Department of Labor unemployment. I know there's the weekly payment but are there other programs or services included? My cousin mentioned something about job training assistance and I heard there might be help with health insurance too but I'm not sure what's real vs what people just assume. Has anyone been through this recently and can tell me what the actual benefits are beyond just the money?

Unemployment insurance through NYS Department of Labor provides several key benefits. The main one is weekly monetary payments - currently up to $504 per week depending on your previous earnings. You also get access to job search resources through the state's career centers, reemployment services, and sometimes training programs. The payments can last up to 26 weeks in regular circumstances. You'll need to file weekly claims and meet job search requirements though.

•Thanks! Do I need to prove I'm looking for work every week? What kind of documentation do they want?

The job search requirement is 3 work search activities per week. This can include applying for jobs, attending interviews, going to job fairs, or networking events. You need to keep a log with details about each activity - employer name, date, type of contact. NYS Department of Labor can audit your records so keep everything documented.

•ugh the paperwork is so annoying but yeah you definitely need to track everything or they'll cut your benefits

The main benefit is obviously your weekly unemployment insurance payment which is calculated based on your highest earning quarter. For 2025 the maximum weekly benefit is $504. But NYS Department of Labor also provides access to job search resources through their career centers, reemployment services, and you might qualify for training programs if your job was eliminated due to trade or technology. You'll also get continued access to the job bank and career counseling services.

•Thanks! Do you know if there's any help with COBRA or health insurance costs while you're collecting?

Don't forget about the career services! I used their resume workshop and job placement assistance when I was on unemployment last year. They also have partnerships with employers for direct hiring events. The monetary benefit is obvious but the career support actually helped me find better work than I had before.

•Wait really? I had no idea there were workshops. Where do you find out about those? My local career center never mentioned anything like that when I signed up.

The system is so broken though... sure there are 'benefits' but try actually getting through to someone at NYS Department of Labor when you have problems. I've been calling for weeks about an adjudication issue and just get hung up on every time. The phone system is a nightmare.

•Have you tried calling early in the morning? I know it's frustrating but the phone lines are usually less busy around 8am. You can also try using Claimyr at claimyr.com - they help people get through to NYS Department of Labor agents. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out if you keep getting disconnected.

I went through this last year and the reemployment services were actually pretty helpful. They have workshops on resume writing and interview skills. The job training depends on your situation - if you were laid off due to trade issues you might qualify for WIOA programs that can pay for certification courses or even college. As for health insurance, unemployment itself doesn't provide coverage but you might be eligible for reduced-cost plans through NY State of Health marketplace since your income is lower.

•Wait, can they really pay for college courses? I thought that was only for specific trade programs.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about these programs, I had success using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Was way easier than sitting on hold for hours trying to get answers about what benefits I qualified for.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call for days and keep getting disconnected.

The extended benefits depend on what happened with your job too. If it was a mass layoff or plant closure there are additional WARN Act protections and rapid response services. NYS Department of Labor will coordinate with local workforce development boards to provide specialized assistance. Also if you've been working steadily for years like you mentioned, you'll probably qualify for the full 26 weeks of benefits.

benefits are benefits i guess but the system is so broken, took me 6 weeks just to get my first payment and they never explained half the programs you're talking about. good luck getting straight answers from anyone there

•The initial delays are frustrating but once you're in the system the benefits do provide a safety net while you're job searching.
