Running out of NY unemployment benefits in 3 days - how to reapply?
My unemployment benefits are about to run out in just 3 days! I lost my hotel job back in August 2023 due to downsizing, and I've been searching for work ever since. The job market has been brutal in my area and I'm starting to panic. I've tried reading through the NYSDOL website about what to do when benefits expire but the information isn't clear at all. Has anyone successfully reapplied after exhausting regular benefits? Do I need to fill out a new application completely or is there an extension process? Any help would be seriously appreciated because I can't afford to miss payments on my bills.

Sorry to hear that. When my benefits ran out I had to file a completely new claim. But you might have diffrent options depending on your situation. Try calling the unemployment office directly - they're the only ones who can tell you for sure what to do next. Good luck!

Thanks. Did you have any waiting period between claims? I'm worried there will be a gap and I can't afford that right now.

Yeah there was about a 2 week gap for me which seriously sucked. That's why you should get on the phone with them ASAP before ur current benefits run out.

Getting through on the phone is basically impossible tho. I called 43 times in one day last month and never got through 🤬

After spending DAYS trying to reach ny unemployment by phone with no luck, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that automated the calling process for me. They called repeatedly and then connected me directly to an agent when someone finally picked up. Talking to an actual person got my issue resolved in minutes and my funds started flowing again. Best money I've spent to get my benefits flowing again! Check out this video if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Totally get the skepticism - I felt the same way. But after 2 weeks of getting nowhere on my own, I was desperate enough to try. They just do the automated calling part for you which saved me hours of frustration.

No catch that I found. They just call for you and connect when someone answers. Saved me from the endless hold music hell lol

Does this actually work for NY unemployment? Their phone system is the WORST I've ever dealt with.

Worked for me! I got connected to an agent in about 3 hours versus the two full days I wasted trying to call myself.

It depends on whether you've used all your benefit weeks or if your benefit year is ending. Those are two different situations. If your benefit year isn't over yet but you've used all available weeks, you're unfortunately out of luck until your benefit year ends. If your benefit year is ending, you can file a new claim right away. The system is super confusing on purpose I think 😡

I think my benefit year is still going for another 5 months, but I've used almost all my available weeks. That's terrible news if there's nothing I can do until the year ends.

Yeah, that's the worst position to be in. You basically fall into a gap in the system. Definitely worth calling to confirm tho since sometimes there are special extensions they don't advertise.

OMG the exact same thing happened to me last month!! I panicked too but ended up figuring it out. So listen carefully: You need to wait till your benefit year ends completely before filing a new claim. BUT you should call them now to see if you qualify for any extensions (sometimes they have special programs they don't tell you about on the website). Also make sure you've been properly certifying every week bc missing even one week can mess things up. Took me 6 weeks of back and forth to get my new claim processed but I finally got it!

The whole unemployment system in NY is a nightmare right now. I had a similar situation and spent WEEKS trying to get answers. Here's what I learned: - You can't technically "extend" regular UI benefits once you've used all your weeks - You have to wait until your benefit year ends to file a completely new claim - HOWEVER, you may qualify for additional assistance programs - The website is useless for figuring this out - you NEED to talk to a human I finally got through to someone using claimyr.com after wasting days trying to call myself. Worth every penny to get my issue fixed and money flowing again. Whatever you do, don't wait until your benefits actually run out to try to fix this! Also, make sure you're still certifying every week even if you're not getting paid - this can help with backdating issues later.

What kind of additional assistance programs are there? The site just keeps showing me the same basic info over and over.

There are some training programs that can extend benefits, and depending on your situation there might be other state assistance programs. You won't find much on their website though - it's all hidden behind the customer service wall 🙄

Yeah, it's just a service that does the calling/holding for you. Saved me literal days of my life on hold. Just google claimyr and you'll find it.

WHY IS THE SYSTEM SO COMPLICATED?!? It's like they WANT us to fail. I swear I need a law degree just to understand my own unemployment claim 😩

Preach! 🙌 It's designed to be confusing so people give up. Classic government BS.

For real tho. And then when you finally get someone on the phone they act like you should have known all this obscure info that's nowhere on their website 🤡

You might qualify for Extended Benefits (EB) but it depends on the current unemployment rate in NY. They don't make this clear anywhere on the website, but it's a thing. Call them ASAP to find out. The number to call is on your payment history page.

EB hasnt been available in NY for a while now. The unemployment rate isn't high enough to trigger it anymore.

If your benefits are almost done you NEED to talk to a representative before they run out!!! I waited too long and ended up with no income for almost 2 months while they processed my new claim. Don't be me!

i literally just went through this exact situation last week. Here's what you do: 1. DO NOT submit a new claim online yet 2. Call the unemployment office (i know, impossible) 3. Ask specifically about your "benefit year ending options" 4. Have your employment history for the past 18 months ready After 3 days of trying to get someone on the phone, I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected with an agent in about 2 hours. The agent was able to look at my specific situation and tell me exactly what to do. Turns out I qualified for something they hadn't even told me about, and they helped file it right on the phone. Saved me weeks of stress.

Yeah it worked for me! They just do the calling for you. Like instead of you pressing redial 500 times they have some system that keeps calling and then alerts you when someone picks up.

Do they require you to give them your SSN or any personal info?

No way, I wouldn't have used it if they asked for that. They just call the unemployment office and then forward the call to you once someone answers.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you've used all your regular UI weeks and there are no federal extensions active (which there aren't right now), then you're gonna have a gap until your benefit year ends and you can file a new claim. The system totally sucks. Your best bet is to apply for other assistance like SNAP while you're in this gap.

That's what I was afraid of... any idea how long the new application process takes once my benefit year ends?

When I refiled it took about 3 weeks to get approved, but I've heard others say it can take longer. Start gathering your employment info now so you're ready.

The same thing happened to me and I found out I was eligible for something called Trade Adjustment Assistance because my job was outsourced. Not saying this applies to you but there are sometimes special programs depending on WHY you lost your job. Worth asking about all possible options when you call.

if youre gonna call them (which u should), call right when they open at 8am. i tried for weeks at different times and ONLY got through when i called at exactly 8:00. otherwise prepare to hear "we are experiencing high call volume" for eternity 🤣

This! And have all your info ready - claim ID, SSN, employment history, etc. They'll hang up on you if you're not prepared and then you're back to square one.

not to be that person but have you tried expanding your job search? i was super picky at first but once my benefits were running low i started applying to literally everything and finally found something. not ideal but at least it's income.

I was in your exact shoes 2 months ago with NY unemployment. Here's what I learned: For some reason, getting clear info about what to do when benefits run out is nearly impossible on their website or through the automated systems. The ONLY way to get accurate info about your specific situation is to talk to a live representative. But as we all know, getting through to NY unemployment by phone is like winning the lottery. I spent DAYS trying to get through with no luck. I finally broke down and used claimyr.com which basically automated the calling process for me. They kept dialing until they got through, then connected me to the agent. Once I got an actual human on the phone, they told me exactly what to do for my situation (which turned out to be different than what their website implied). It was worth every penny to finally get clear answers and get my new claim properly filed. Don't waste time trying to figure it out from their website - the info there is vague at best and misleading at worst. Talk to a human ASAP.

Think what you want, but when you've been on hold for 6+ hours over multiple days you might change your mind. Not everyone has unlimited time to waste on hold.
