Part-time work limits and job search tracking for New York Unemployment?

Just got ny unemployment benefits after 6 days, which is pretty quick. But I'm having trouble finding info on the website about part-time work limits while on unemployment. Can anyone help? Also, where do I track my job search? Is it on the site or should I just keep my own records? I've got a spreadsheet going but not sure if that's enough.

Congrats on getting ur benefits so fast! 🎉 For part-time work, you can earn up to $504 per week without losing benefits. Anything over that, and they'll reduce your benefits dollar-for-dollar. Make sure to report ALL earnings when you certify each week.

Thanks for the info! Do you know if there's a limit on hours, or just the earnings?

It's based on earnings, not hours. So you could work 40 hours at minimum wage and still get some benefits. Just be honest about what you earn each week!

Wait, really? That seems like a lot. Are you sure its not less? I thought it was like $300 or something

Nope, I'm sure. It changed recently. Used to be lower but they upped it to $504. You can check the NYSDOL website for the most up-to-date info.

Hey guys, I found a method to get someone on the phone at ny unemployment. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Sounds sketchy af. You sure this isn't a scam? 🤔

Nah, it's legit. I was skeptical too but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration.

How long did it take to get through? And did you have to give them any personal info?

Took about 45 mins for me. And nope, just my phone number so they could connect the call. They don't ask for any sensitive stuff.

For job search tracking, keep ur own records. The site doesn't have a built-in tracker. I use a Google Sheet with dates, company names, positions, and any follow-ups. Save emails and screenshots of applications too. They might audit you, so better safe than sorry!

Quick question - does volunteering count as a work search activity?

Volunteering can count, but it depends on the nature of the work and how it relates to your job search. Best to check with NYSDOL for specifics on your situation.

Pro tip: set up email alerts for jobs in your field. Counts as a work search activity and makes it easier to apply quickly. Indeed and LinkedIn are good places to start.

Has anyone actually been audited for their job search? I'm curious how thorough they are

Giovanni Martello

I was audited last year. They asked for all my records and even contacted some employers to verify. Keep. Everything.

Yikes, that sounds stressful. How long did the audit process take?

Giovanni Martello

About 3 weeks from when they first contacted me. Not fun, but manageable if you've kept good records.

Friendly reminder to everyone: don't forget to certify every week! Set an alarm on your phone or something. Missing a week can mess up your whole claim.
