New York Unemployment Part Time Work Rules - Can I Work While Collecting?
Just got approved for unemployment benefits in NY state. Looking to pick up some part time work while job hunting in tech. Anyone know the rules about working part time? Also confused about job search requirements - do I need to log these on the website or can I keep my own records? Currently tracking everything in a spreadsheet but want to make sure im doing this right.

been dealing with this for months now. You can work up to 7 days part-time, but anything over 10 hours reduces your weekly benefit amount. Once you hit 30 hours or make more than your benefit rate, you get zero for that week. Keep claiming tho - it doesnt mess up future weeks as long as you report honestly.

•facts 💯 just make sure you report ALL income. They audit this stuff and its not worth the headache if you mess up

Hey everyone! I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at unemployment to answer these questions. Used this site called claimyr.com - it costs $20 but they dial through the phone menu and wait on hold, then connect you when a real person picks up. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

For job search tracking - KEEP YOUR SPREADSHEET! You only need to submit if they audit you. I document everything: company name, position, date applied, contact info, and any responses. Been doing this for 3 months now and its worked fine.

IMPORTANT INFO FOR EVERYONE: Here's everything you need to know about part-time work and UI benefits in NY: First, understand the hours-based system: - Less than 10 hours = full benefit amount - 10-20 hours = 75% of benefit - 21-30 hours = 50% of benefit - Over 30 hours = no benefits You MUST report any income earned, even if its just a few hours. The system calculates your reduced benefit automatically. For job searches, you need 3 work-search activities per week minimum. Keep detailed records - they can audit up to a year back. If youre having trouble getting answers, use claimyr.com to get through to an agent. Its worth the $20 to actually talk to someone. Source: been through this whole process twice and learned the hard way

Thanks everyone for the detailed info! As someone new to this whole unemployment system, this thread is incredibly helpful. @Dmitry Ivanov that breakdown is exactly what I needed - gonna screenshot that for reference. Quick follow up question: when you report part-time income, do you report gross or net earnings? And does freelance/contract work count the same as regular part-time employment? I do some web dev consulting on the side and want to make sure I'm reporting everything correctly.

•Welcome to the community! For your questions: you report GROSS earnings (before taxes) and yes, freelance/contract work absolutely counts the same as regular part-time work. The system doesn't distinguish between W2 vs 1099 income - all earnings need to be reported. Make sure to keep records of all your consulting work including invoices and payments received. Better to over-document than get caught in an audit later!
