New York Unemployment benefits expiring soon, told I can't reapply until 2024. What are my options?
My unemployment benefits are about to run out after being laid off last November. I've been applying for jobs since getting my separation agreement, but still no luck. I called to ask about what to do next, and the agent was super dismissive. She just said I'm not eligible to reapply until November 2024. Does this mean I'll have no income for over a year if I don't find work soon? What can I do? Any advice would be great.

Ugh, that sucks man. The system is so broken. I've been dealing with similar bs for months now. Have you looked into any other assistance programs?

Not yet, feeling pretty overwhelmed tbh. Any specific programs you'd recommend?

Check out SNAP for food assistance and see if you qualify for Medicaid. Also, some cities have rent assistance programs. It's not much, but it might help a bit while you're job hunting.

Hey, I was in a similar situation last year and found a way to actually get someone helpful on the phone. I used this site called claimyr.com - it's a calling tool that dials through the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Sounds too good to be true. How does it actually work? Is it legit?

It's totally legit! You pay, give them your phone #, and they call you when they get an agent. Saved me like 3 hours of hold time.

I get the skepticism, but it's just a time-saving service. They don't access your info or anything. Just connects the call. For me, it was worth it to actually get answers.

The 2024 thing doesn't sound right. Are you sure you understood correctly? Maybe try calling again and speaking to a different agent. Sometimes they give conflicting info.

Bruh, ny unemployment is a joke. I swear they hire the rudest people on purpose 🙄 Keep pushing and don't let them brush you off!

Have you considered gig work or temping while you look for something permanent? It might help bridge the gap and keep some income coming in.

That's not a bad idea. Any suggestions on where to start with gig work?

Try apps like Uber, DoorDash, or TaskRabbit. Also check out local temp agencies. It's not ideal, but it can help pay the bills while you're job hunting.

I've been through this rodeo before, and here's what I've learned about dealing with NY Unemployment and maximizing your options: 1. Don't take the first answer as gospel. Different agents often give different info. Keep calling until you get consistent answers. 2. Check if you're eligible for an extension. Sometimes there are programs available that the first-line agents don't mention. 3. Look into other assistance programs like SNAP, HEAP for utility assistance, and local rent help programs. 4. Consider part-time or gig work. It might affect your benefits, but it's better than no income. 5. Keep detailed records of all your job search activities. This can help if you need to appeal any decisions. 6. Use resources like the NY Department of Labor website and their social media for updates. Sometimes they post important info there first. 7. If you're having trouble getting through on the phone, try using claimyr.com. It's a service that waits on hold for you and connects you when an agent is available. Costs a bit, but can save hours of frustration. 8. Don't give up! The system can be a maze, but persistence usually pays off. Hang in there, OP. It's tough, but you've got this! 💪

Have you tried reaching out to your local state representative? Sometimes they can help cut through the red tape.
