Will I qualify for a new UI claim in NY if I haven't worked during my unemployment period? Benefit year ending soon
My benefit year is ending soon and I need to reapply for unemployment. I can see my Benefit Year Ending date in my online Payment History. I've been looking at the Reapplication Options section on the NY unemployment website, and I'm concerned about qualifying for a new claim. According to the information, to be eligible for a new UI claim, applicants must: 1. Have worked and earned enough wages in covered employment. 2. Have lost work due to no fault of their own. 3. Be ready, willing, and able to look for and accept work. The problem is I haven't worked since being on unemployment. The website clearly states: "Applicants who received no wages from covered employment during the past five quarters will not be eligible for a new UI claim." I tried using the benefit rate calculator to estimate what my weekly UI rate might be based on earnings, but it's not much help since I don't have recent wages. The calculator only provides an estimate anyway. Does anyone know if I'll qualify for a new claim given that I haven't had any covered employment during the past five quarters? Has anyone been in this situation before? I'm worried about what happens next when my benefit year ends.

Im going through this right now. If you havent worked in the past 5 quarters you wont qualify for a new claim. Its frustrating but thats how it works unfortunately 🤷♀️

Hey I finally got through to someone at unemployment using claimyr.com - they explained everything to me. It costs $20 but saved me days of calling. Check out their youtube video here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

DETAILED ANSWER FOR EVERYONE IN THIS SITUATION: Ok so here's what you need to know about reapplying after your benefit year ends: 1. You MUST have worked and earned wages in covered employment during the past 5 quarters 2. The work loss must be no fault of your own 3. You need to be actively looking for work If you haven't worked at all while collecting benefits, you won't qualify for a new claim. Your best options are: - Start job searching immediately - Look into other assistance programs - Contact ny unemployment directly (use claimyr.com if you cant get through - saved me hours) The system is designed to require new work between claims. They want people to have actually worked before getting new benefits. Keep all your job search records! Hope this helps everyone! 💯
