How to reapply for unemployment in California EDD after a claim expires
So my benefit year ended last month and I still haven't found stable work. I was collecting UI for a while but my claim just ran out and I honestly have no idea what happens next. Do I have to start completely over and reapply for unemployment from scratch? Will California EDD look at my old employer or my most recent work history when calculating my new weekly benefit amount? I've been doing some part-time gigs here and there but nothing full-time. I'm kind of panicking because I don't want to go weeks without any income while they process everything again. Has anyone gone through reapplying after a benefit year ends? What should I expect?

Yes, you do need to file a completely new claim when your benefit year expires. You can't just reopen the old one. Go to UI Online on the California EDD website and look for the option to file a new claim. The system will walk you through it step by step. Your new weekly benefit amount will be recalculated based on your base period earnings, which is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. If you worked any part-time hours during your benefit year, those wages might factor into your new claim depending on when you earned them.

AuthorOk so I go through the whole application process again? Like I have to re-enter all my employment history and everything? That's going to take forever.

it really doesnt take that long honestly maybe 20-30 min if you have your employment info ready

Yes you do re-enter your employment history but you only need to go back 18 months or so. Have your employer names, addresses, and approximate dates of employment ready and it goes faster than you'd think.

One thing people don't realize is that when you reapply for unemployment you might actually qualify for a higher weekly benefit amount if your wages increased during the benefit year. California EDD recalculates everything fresh. Also make sure you file your new claim as soon as your old one expires - don't wait because you cannot backdate claims and every week you delay is potentially lost money.

AuthorWait really?? I had no idea the benefit amount could go up. That's actually really helpful to know. I've been putting off reapplying because I was dreading it.

this is true, happened to me my second claim was like $40 more per week than my first one

When I had to reapply last year I was so stressed about the phone situation. I needed to talk to someone at California EDD to ask about my specific situation with gig work before I filed, and I could NOT get through on the phone for days. A friend told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) which basically holds your place in the California EDD phone queue for you. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that explains how it works. I finally got through to an actual EDD rep who walked me through exactly how my part-time earnings would affect my new claim eligibility. Saved me so much confusion.

AuthorOmg I've been trying to call EDD for two days straight and keep getting the 'we cannot take your call' recording. I'll check that out, thanks.

does that actually work?? i've been calling for a week and a half

Yes it worked for me, I was skeptical too but I got a callback within a few hours and actually talked to a real person at California EDD

gonna look into this, the phone situation with EDD is absolutely maddening

wait are you talking about reapplying after your benefit year ends or reapplying after you got disqualified those are totally different things and the process is different
0 coins
Ava Thompson
AuthorMine ended because the benefit year just expired, not a disqualification. Does that change anything?
0 coins
Amina Diop
oh ok yeah then you just file a new claim online, if it was a disqualification youd have to appeal or wait out the penalty weeks first

Miguel Herrera
Good clarification. If it's just a natural expiration of the benefit year there's no penalty period and you can file immediately. Disqualification situations are handled differently and sometimes require additional steps before you can collect again.

The actual steps for how to reapply for unemployment through California EDD: First log into UI Online at edd.ca.gov. Then look for 'File a New Claim' - it should be visible on your dashboard. You'll go through a series of questions about your employment situation, reason for separation from your most recent employer, and your availability to work. After submitting you'll get a confirmation number. Then you wait for EDD to process it - usually takes 3-4 weeks for the first payment on a new claim. While you're waiting you still need to certify for benefits every two weeks even before approval comes through, otherwise you could miss out on those weeks of benefits.

AuthorThis is really clear thank you. So I should start certifying right away even before I know if I'm approved?
0 coins
Oliver Schmidt
Exactly. File the claim, then start certifying on your normal schedule even while it's pending. If approved they'll pay all the certified weeks back to when you filed.

I reapplied back in March and honestly the hardest part was the job search requirements. When you reapply you're back to the full three job search activities per week requirement unless you're on an approved standby status. After being on UI for a while I had kind of let my job search records get sloppy so that was a wake up call lol

Ava Thompson
AuthorUgh good reminder, I have not been keeping the best records of my job search activities

Javier Torres
Keep a spreadsheet or use the CalJOBS website to log them, EDD can ask for your records at any time and if you can't show proof you could end up with an overpayment issue

CalJOBS is actually really useful for this, you can log job search activities right on the site and it syncs with your EDD stuff

I'm going through something similar right now and honestly the system is SO frustrating. I reapplied two weeks ago and my claim just says 'pending' with no explanation and no estimated wait time. I've been trying to call EVERY DAY and cannot get through. How are people supposed to survive financially while California EDD takes their sweet time processing claims?? This is a broken system.

Zainab Ali
pending usually just means they're processing it, it doesn't mean anything is wrong necessarily

Paolo Romano
That's what everyone says but I have BILLS due now not in three weeks when they finally get around to it

The pending status on a new claim is normal for the first 2-3 weeks. Keep certifying and try not to panic unless it goes past 4 weeks without movement or any notices from EDD.

something i didn't know when i reapplied was that you have to register with CalJOBS within 21 days of filing your new claim or EDD can hold up your payments. they send a notice about it but i almost missed it
0 coins
Ava Thompson
AuthorI did NOT know this, thank you! Is that for everyone or just certain claimants?
0 coins
QuantumLeap
I think it's for most people unless you're on an approved standby status through your union or something like that

Miguel Herrera
This is correct. CalJOBS registration is required for most UI claimants in California. You can do it online at caljobs.ca.gov and it just takes a few minutes. Don't skip this step.

my situation when i reapplied was complicated bc i had done some freelance stuff during my benefit year and i wasnt sure if that counted as wages for my new base period. ended up that it did matter but only the stuff i paid taxes on. the cash jobs didnt count
0 coins
Ava Thompson
AuthorI have the exact same issue with some freelance stuff. So if it was reported to the IRS it counts?
0 coins
Yara Nassar
yeah basically if you got a 1099 for it and reported it those wages go into your base period calculation
0 coins
Oliver Schmidt
To be precise - EDD calculates your base period using wages reported to them by employers via payroll taxes. Self-employment/1099 income handled differently and in some cases you may need to provide documentation. Worth calling EDD specifically about this if your situation is complicated.

I spent THREE WEEKS trying to get someone at EDD on the phone when I was reapplying because my old claim had an overpayment flag and I wasn't sure if that would affect my new claim. Three weeks! I finally tried Claimyr after seeing it mentioned in another thread and I got through to an EDD agent the same day. She confirmed my new claim wouldn't be held up but they would start collecting the overpayment from my new benefits. At least I knew what was happening instead of just panicking.

an overpayment from an old claim affects your new claim?? this is news to me
0 coins
Keisha Jackson
They can take a percentage of your weekly benefits to repay the overpayment but they don't just stop your claim entirely. The EDD agent explained it really clearly once I actually got through

Ava Thompson
AuthorGood to know about Claimyr, I'm definitely going to try it. And also hoping I don't have any overpayment issues lol

does anyone know if there's a waiting week when you reapply?? I thought California got rid of the waiting week
0 coins
Miguel Herrera
California eliminated the one-week unpaid waiting period, so you should be able to get paid for the first week of your new claim without serving a waiting week. This changed a few years ago.

Malik Johnson
oh thank god, that's one less thing to worry about

yeah no waiting week anymore, that's correct

Just went through reapplying last month and wanted to share my timeline so people know what to expect. Filed new claim on a Monday, got confirmation email same day. Certified for first two weeks on the scheduled date. Received approval notice at week 3. Payment hit my Bank of America EDD debit card at week 3.5. Total time from filing to first payment was about 24 days which felt like forever but was apparently normal based on this forum lol

Ava Thompson
AuthorThis is exactly what I needed to see, an actual real-world timeline. Thank you so much

Paolo Romano
24 days is a long time when you have zero income coming in though

100% agree it's brutal but at least it was back-paid to my original filing date so I didn't lose those weeks

Zainab Ali
one thing i'll add is make sure your contact info is updated in UI Online before you reapply because if EDD sends notices to a wrong address or old email you could miss something important and end up in adjudication

Ava Thompson
AuthorGood call, I moved earlier this year and need to double check that my address is current
0 coins
Zainab Ali
yeah do that first before you even file the new claim
0 coins
Natasha Volkov
also make sure your bank account info is current if you changed banks or got a new account number
0 coins
Natasha Volkov
I don't understand why California EDD makes reapplying so confusing. You'd think after being in the system already they could just pull your info and renew your claim automatically. Instead you have to go through the whole thing again from scratch like you never existed to them. The system is designed to make people give up.
0 coins
Javier Torres
I mean I get the frustration but they need to verify your current situation bc your employment status might have changed
0 coins
Natasha Volkov
sure but they could at least pre-fill the stuff that doesn't change like your name and social security number lol
0 coins
Connor Murphy
UI Online does actually pre-fill some information from your previous claim. Not everything but it does remember some of your prior employer info which speeds things up a bit.

totally off topic but has anyone noticed EDD seems to process claims faster now than a few years ago? my 2022 claim took like 8 weeks to get anything, this new one in 2025 has been much faster

yes definitely better than the COVID era nightmare, still not perfect but way more functional

For anyone still struggling to get through to California EDD on the phone about their reapplication, I want to reiterate that Claimyr at claimyr.com really does work. The video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows exactly what the process looks like. I know people are skeptical but when you literally cannot get answers any other way it's worth trying.

To summarize the key steps for how to reapply for unemployment in California for anyone finding this thread later: 1) Log into UI Online and select 'File a New Claim' 2) Complete all questions about your employment and separation reason 3) Register or re-register with CalJOBS within 21 days 4) Begin certifying for benefits on your scheduled certification dates immediately 5) Continue your job search activities (3 per week) and document them 6) Watch for any mail or email notices from EDD in case they need additional information. The whole process typically takes 3-4 weeks from filing to first payment.

AuthorPinning this in my brain forever, this is the clearest breakdown of the whole process. Thank you everyone in this thread, I went from totally panicking to feeling like I actually know what to do next.

Good luck! The process really isn't as scary as it seems once you've done it before. The main thing is just don't delay filing and keep up with your certifications throughout.
