New York Unemployment - Do I need to notify before traveling abroad for a week?
Need to travel outside US for a week. Called the unemployment number and heard automated message about not certifying from abroad. Not sure if I need to actually talk to someone or just send a message about my travel plans. Anyone know the right process?

You absolutely need to tell them before leaving! Send a secure message through the portal AND try to speak with someone. If you certify from outside the US its fraud and they will find out trust me 😬

I used claimyr.com to get through to someone. Its $20 but they call and wait on hold then connect you to an agent. Totally worth it for peace of mind before traveling. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

When I went to Mexico I just skipped certifying that week. Easier than dealing with all the red tape tbh

Heres what you need to do: 1. Document your travel dates 2. Try reaching an agent BEFORE you leave (use claimyr.com if you cant get through) 3. Send secure message with dates 4. Don't certify while abroad 5. When back, call them to certify for that week 6. Keep all travel docs in case they need proof Better safe than sorry with unemployment. They've gotten super strict about this stuff lately.

Had a similar situation last month. Definitely notify them beforehand - I sent a secure message through the NY.gov portal explaining my travel dates and reasons. Also made sure to NOT certify while I was out of the country. When I got back, I called to handle that week's certification. The rep said as long as you're transparent about it upfront, they're usually understanding. Just don't try to certify from abroad or they'll flag your account for sure.

•This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience. Did you have any issues when you called back to certify for that week? Like did they ask for proof of travel or anything?

•@Rachel Clark did they give you any trouble about the gap in certification? I m'worried they might think I m'gaming the system even if I m'being upfront about it

•@Rachel Clark How long did it take to get through when you called back? I m'planning a similar trip and wondering if I should budget extra time to deal with the phone system when I return.

•@Rachel Clark This is super helpful! I m'in a similar boat - need to visit family overseas for a week. Did you send the secure message right before you left or did you give them more advance notice? And when you called back to certify, did they make you wait until your regular certification day or could you do it as soon as you returned?

•@Rachel Clark This gives me some hope! I ve'been stressed about this whole thing. Quick question - when you sent the secure message, did you include your planned return date or just that you d'be traveling? Want to make sure I include all the right info when I reach out to them.

•@Rachel Clark Really appreciate you sharing this! I m'dealing with the exact same situation right now. One more question - did you mention the specific reason for your travel in the secure message, or did you just say you d'be out of the country? Trying to figure out how detailed I need to be when I contact them.
