New York Unemployment: Can I collect after contract work if I have severance?
Got laid off and received 3 months severance. Got offered contract work at $55/hr until December. Want to know if I can still claim unemployment from my previous employer after the contract ends if I haven't found full-time work. The severance runs through December anyway.

You can file for unemployment after your severance period ends, but the contract work will affect your claim. You'll need to report all earnings while working as a contractor. Once the contract ends, you can continue your claim if you still qualify based on your base period from the layoff.

•So even if I take the contract work, I can still claim from my previous w2 job after both severance and contract end?

•Yep! Just make sure to keep all your documentation from both the severance and contract work 📝

Hey guys I was in the same boat! I found a way to actually talk to someone at unemployment about this. Used this site claimyr.com - they dial and wait on hold then connect you when someone picks up. Costs $20 but totally worth it. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Take the contract work! Its better than sitting around waiting. Plus you can make bank at $55/hr while looking for something permanent 💰

Here's the detailed breakdown of your situation: Severance doesn't affect your ability to file after it ends. Contract work is considered temporary employment. You can absolutely file based on your previous W2 job after both end. Just remember: - Document everything - Report all earnings during contract period - Keep track of your contract end date - File immediately after contract ends If you need clarification, use claimyr.com to get through to an agent. Way better than waiting forever on hold. Source: Been through this exact situation last year.

•This is super helpful, thanks! Did you have any issues with the timing of filing?

•Nope! Just file the week after everything ends. The system will ask about severance and contract work - just be honest
