Need phone number for NY unemployment claim completion - they say I must speak to agent

I'm so confused right now. I filed my initial NY unemployment claim last week and got a message saying I need to speak with someone to complete it. They didn't give me a specific number to call, just said I need to talk to an agent. I've tried calling the main unemployment number (888-209-8124) but I'm just stuck in this endless phone tree that never connects me to a real person! Does anyone know if there's a direct number I should be calling to finish my claim? I really need this processed ASAP as I'm already behind on rent for March 2025. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately, there's no 'secret' direct number to reach NYSDOL agents. The main number (888-209-8124) is correct, but you need to navigate their phone system strategically. Call exactly when they open at 8:00 AM Monday-Friday, press the options for 'existing claim' even if yours is new, then when they ask about certification choose the option for 'questions about your benefits.' This sometimes gets you to a queue faster. Be prepared to wait 2-3 hours though, so keep your phone charged!

Thanks for the tips! I tried calling right at 8 AM yesterday but still couldn't get through. It just kept saying 'high call volume' and disconnected me after 20 minutes! I'll try the 'existing claim' route tomorrow though. Do you know if there's a specific day of the week that's better to call?

i had the same problem last month. keep trying diffrent options when u call. sometimes if u say u want info about a 1099-G form they will put u through to a person faster. also try calling at like 3:30pm, sometimes less busy then

Thanks, that's a good idea about trying different menu options. I'll definitely try the 1099-G trick. And I hadn't thought about calling later in the day - I just assumed earlier was better!

I was in the EXACT same situation in January. Tried calling for WEEKS and couldn't get through. It's absolutely RIDICULOUS how impossible it is to reach anyone at NY unemployment!!! The system is DESIGNED to keep people from getting their benefits. I ended up having to use a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE It was the only thing that worked for me after wasting countless hours trying to get through. My claim was finally processed the same day I spoke with the agent.

Does this actually work? Sounds too good to be true honestly. Has anyone else tried this Claimyr thing? I'm skeptical of anything that claims to get you through to NY unemployment when their system is so broken.

My cousin used that Claimyr service last month and said it worked pretty well. I think it's legit. I've been lucky enough not to need unemployment but she was desperate after trying for like 10 days straight to get through.

Thanks for sharing about your cousin's experience! I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point. Two weeks of my claim being in limbo is stressing me out.

Let me clarify some things about NYSDOL phone procedures that might help. When you receive a message saying you need to speak with an agent to complete your claim, this typically means there's an identity verification issue or a discrepancy in your employment history that requires manual review. The main number (888-209-8124) is indeed correct, but there are specific times when staffing is higher. Monday and Tuesday mornings tend to have the highest call volumes, while Thursday afternoons (particularly 2-4 PM) often have shorter wait times. When you call, avoid the automated system as much as possible by pressing: 1. Option 1 (for English) 2. Option 2 (for claim questions) 3. Option 1 (for existing claims) 4. Option 3 (for payment issues) This routing typically leads to agents who can handle most claim completion issues. Be sure to have your NY.gov ID, the last 4 digits of your SSN, and any claim confirmation numbers ready. If your claim has been pending for more than 3 weeks, you should also email them through your NY.gov account messaging center with the subject line "Claim Completion Assistance Required" which flags it for priority review.

This is incredibly helpful! Thank you so much for the detailed instructions. I'll try calling Thursday afternoon with this exact sequence of options. I really appreciate you breaking it down like this - the NYSDOL website isn't clear about any of this stuff!

Has anyone tried DMing them on Twitter? I had a problem with my claim in February and tweeted at @NYSLabor, then they sent me a DM asking for my info and actually helped resolve my issue without having to call. Worth a shot maybe?

i tried that but they just sent me a generic message to call the same number. think it depends on what kind of problem u have

Just checking back - did you ever get through to them? I'm curious if any of these suggestions worked for you.

Yes! I finally got through yesterday! I tried calling on Thursday around 3:15 PM like someone suggested and used the exact menu options that were recommended. Still had to wait about 45 minutes on hold, but eventually got connected to an agent who was actually really helpful. She said there was an issue with my identity verification that needed to be manually reviewed. They fixed it on the spot and said my claim should be processed within 3 business days. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for all your suggestions!

Congrats! Always nice to hear when someone actually gets through the system successfully lol. Fingers crossed your payment comes through quickly!
