NYS Department of Labor unemployment eligibility status - what does this actually mean?

I'm looking at my my.ny.gov account and it shows 'unemployment eligibility status' but I have no idea what this means or how to interpret it. Is this different from my claim status? My weekly claim went through fine last week but now I'm seeing this eligibility thing and I'm worried something changed. Does anyone know what the different eligibility statuses mean and if I should be concerned?

The unemployment eligibility status refers to whether you meet the basic requirements to receive UI benefits. It's separate from your weekly claim status. Common statuses include 'eligible', 'pending review', or 'under investigation'. If your weekly claims are processing normally, you're probably fine, but the eligibility review could be related to job search requirements or work refusal issues.

Thanks! Mine just says 'under review' but my payments have been coming through. Should I be worried about back payments or something?

same thing happened to me and it turned out they were just verifying my job search log from like 2 months ago, took forever to clear up

I had a similar situation where my eligibility status showed 'pending' for weeks. Turns out NYS Department of Labor was reviewing whether I properly reported some part-time work from months earlier. The key is that if your weekly claims are still being paid, the eligibility review is likely routine verification. However, if you're having trouble reaching someone at NYS Department of Labor to get clarification, I found claimyr.com really helpful - they can actually get you through to speak with an agent without waiting on hold for hours. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works.

Yeah it worked for me. Much easier than the regular phone system and you don't have to give them any personal info upfront.

The eligibility status thing is just another way for NYS Department of Labor to stress us out honestly. Mine said 'review in progress' for like 6 weeks and then just disappeared without any explanation. Meanwhile I'm having panic attacks thinking they're gonna take back all my payments.

For what it's worth, eligibility status reviews are pretty common. They check things like whether you're able and available for work, meeting job search requirements, or if there were any issues with previous employers. As long as you've been following all the rules and your weekly certifications are honest, you should be fine. The review process just takes time because NYS Department of Labor is understaffed.
