NYS Department of Labor unemployment benefits when Trump left office - what changed?
I'm trying to understand what happened to my unemployment claim around January 2021 when Trump left office. I was collecting regular UI benefits and suddenly everything got complicated with my weekly claims. The NYS Department of Labor system seemed to change overnight and I'm still confused about what benefits I was supposed to get. Did anyone else have issues with their claims during that transition period? I think I might have missed out on some benefits because I didn't understand the changes.

The transition from Trump to Biden did bring changes to unemployment programs, but your regular NYS Department of Labor UI benefits shouldn't have been affected directly. What you probably experienced was the extension of federal pandemic programs like PEUC and the addition of the $300 weekly supplement. Many people got confused because the NYS Department of Labor had to update their systems to handle these federal changes.

•That makes sense! I remember getting extra money for a while but then it stopped. Was that the $300 supplement you mentioned?

If you're still having issues understanding your claim history from that period, you might want to call the NYS Department of Labor directly. I know it's hard to get through, but I recently used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals when I needed to sort out my adjudication issues.

•How much does that cost? I've been trying to reach NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my overpayment notice.

•I can't remember the exact cost but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of getting hung up on constantly. The regular phone lines are still impossible.

The whole system was a mess during that time. Biden extended a lot of the pandemic programs that were about to expire under Trump, but the NYS Department of Labor took forever to update their systems. A lot of people had gaps in their benefits while they figured it out. You should check your payment history in your online account to see exactly what you received and when.

Ugh this brings back bad memories! I had to reapply for everything and it took months to get straightened out. The NYS Department of Labor really dropped the ball on communication during that transition.

•Same here! I thought I was going crazy because my weekly claim amounts kept changing with no explanation.
