NY unemployment monetary determination letter delayed - rep couldn't tell me benefit amount

I finally got through to NY unemployment after trying for days! The rep I spoke with said a new Monetary Determination letter will be sent out either today or tomorrow. So frustrated that they couldn't tell me how much my weekly benefit will be or when the funds will actually be released. The guy couldn't even transfer me to someone who could give me more details. I've been waiting for almost 3 weeks since filing my claim. Anyone else dealing with this? Guess I have no choice but to wait for this letter and then try calling again if I don't get paid soon.

This is totally normal but definitely frustrating. The Monetary Determination letter will show your weekly benefit amount (WBA) based on your base period earnings. Once you receive it, your payments should start within 1-3 business days as long as you've been certifying weekly. The reps on the general line often can't access the specific payment details - that's by design for security reasons.

Thanks for the info. I have been certifying every week. Do you know if they'll backdate the payments to when I first filed, or will I only get paid from when they finally process everything?

welcome to the wonderful world of NY unemployment lol. those determination letters take FOREVER to arrive. mine took almost 2 weeks in the mail even tho the rep said it was sent 'today or tomorrow'. just a heads up.

Ugh, seriously? I was hoping to have some clarity by this weekend. Did your payments start before or after you got the letter?

mine started like 3 days after i got the letter. but my cousin got paid before his letter came so who knows lol

I went through the EXACT same thing last month!!! The waiting is HORRIBLE especially when you have bills due!!! I called literally 67 times and either got hung up on or was told they couldn't help me. My letter finally came but it had the wrong base period earnings so I had to CALL AGAIN to fix it and then wait for ANOTHER letter!!!! The whole system is designed to make you give up I swear!!!

That sounds nightmarish. I really hope mine is correct when it arrives. Did you eventually get it sorted out? How long did the whole process take from start to finish?

It took me FIVE WEEKS total to get my first payment!!! And that was only after I had to call and argue with them about my wages. Check your letter carefully when it comes - they left out one of my jobs completely!

After struggling to get through to NYSDOL for weeks about my missing payments, I tried Claimyr and got through to an agent in 17 minutes. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. I was skeptical but desperate, and it actually worked. The agent I reached was able to tell me exactly why my claim was delayed and how to fix it, which saved me from waiting another 3 weeks for a letter that might have had issues anyway. Their website is claimyr.com if you get tired of the endless busy signals.

I've never heard of that before. Did you have to pay for it? I'm already stressed about money which is why I'm filing for unemployment in the first place.

Yes, there is a fee, but for me it was worth it to get my $800+ in weekly benefits started instead of waiting another month. They just connect you to an actual DOL agent - it's those agents who fix your claim. You're still dealing directly with the unemployment office, just skipping the busy signals and disconnects.

My sister just went thru this last month. She got her monetary letter about a week after they told her it was coming, but then she got paid 2 days after that for all the weeks she had certified. So make sure your certifying every week even while waiting!!

This is important advice. Even if your claim is pending, you must certify every week. You won't receive benefits for weeks you don't certify, even if you were eligible. The system doesn't backdate certifications in most cases.

i filed back in january and had the same issue. when i finally got my determination letter it had an incorrect calculation. i ended up having to submit wage documents through their online system and then wait another 2 weeks for recalculation. just a heads up that you might want to have your wage info ready just in case.

That's a good point. I'll gather my W2s and final paystubs now so I'm prepared if there's an issue. Did you have to call again or were you able to submit everything online?

i did everything thru their website under the 'secure message' section. uploaded pdfs of my stubs and w2. took forever but at least i didnt have to call again

Just to give you some peace of mind: If you've been certifying properly each week, once your monetary determination is finalized, you'll receive all back payments for the weeks you certified. The system will automatically process these, usually within 2-3 business days after your claim is fully approved. The letter will show your weekly benefit amount based on your highest quarter of earnings in your base period. One important thing: when you get the letter, check if your base period wages look correct. If there's a discrepancy, you'll need to request a reconsideration with documentation.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. It definitely helps ease my mind a bit knowing the payments should be backdated. I'll double-check everything on the letter when it arrives.

anybody else notice how they always say 'today or tomorrow' for EVERYTHING? lol when i was on unemployment they told me the same thing about my letter, about my payments, about my interview... its like their script or something

When you receive your Monetary Determination letter, here's what to check: 1. Verify all employers from your base period are listed 2. Confirm the wages shown match your records 3. Check if the weekly benefit amount seems correct (approximately 50% of your average weekly wage up to the maximum of $650) If anything is incorrect, you have 30 days to request a review by submitting a Request for Reconsideration. You can do this through your online account under 'Secure Messages' with supporting documentation like W-2s and pay stubs. The good news is that payments are typically released quickly once the determination is finalized, especially if you've been consistently certifying each week.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! Is the base period the last 4 completed quarters before I filed, or is it different in NY? I had a job change about 8 months ago and want to make sure both employers are counted.

In NY, the standard base period is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed. If you don't qualify using that period, they'll use the alternate base period, which is the last 4 completed quarters. With a job change 8 months ago, both employers should be included in either base period calculation, but double-check the letter to make sure.
