NY unemployment certification confusion - got letter saying I can't get benefits until I follow instructions?
I'm super stressed right now about my NY unemployment certification! I went ahead and certified for my weekly benefits today, but then I talked to a specialist who told me I was supposed to certify tomorrow (Wednesday) instead. Now I'm worried I messed everything up! To make things worse, I just got a letter in the mail saying I must follow specific instructions before any benefits can be issued to me. I'm totally confused about what to do next. Will certifying on the wrong day affect my payment? Do I need to call someone to fix this? Should I still try to certify again tomorrow like the specialist said? Anyone deal with something similar?

•The letter says I need to complete an identity verification through [ID.me](ID.me) within 10 days or my benefits will be suspended. But I'm still confused about the certification thing because the specialist specifically told me Wednesday!

The certification day issue and the letter are two separate things. For the certification, the system usually allows you to certify within your assigned window, but certifying early sometimes triggers a review. For the letter, you absolutely must complete the ID.me verification within the timeframe or your benefits will be suspended. Here's what you should do: 1. Complete the ID.me verification immediately - don't wait 2. DON'T try to certify again tomorrow as that could create a duplicate claim 3. Check your payment history in 3-5 business days to see if your certification was processed If you don't see a payment pending by next Monday, then you'll need to call NYSDOL for assistance.

•Thank you so much! I'll do the ID.me verification today. Should I be worried that the specialist told me to certify tomorrow when I already did it today? I'm afraid I'll get flagged for fraud or something.

•It's unlikely you'll be flagged for fraud over this - it's a common misunderstanding. The specialist was probably looking at your assigned certification day, not realizing you'd already certified. The system should pick up that you've already certified for this week, but do keep an eye on your payment history. If anything seems wrong after 5 business days, then call NYSDOL for clarification.

EVERYONE LISTEN UP!!! The ID.me verification is serious business!!!!! I ignored mine back in February and MY BENEFITS GOT CUT OFF FOR 6 WEEKS!!!!!! Do the verification IMMEDIATELY and take clear photos of your documents!!! They rejected my first attempt because the photo was "too blurry" and it delayed everything even more!!!

•Oh no, that sounds awful! I'm definitely doing the verification today. Did you have to do a video call with someone for the ID.me thing or just upload documents?

To clarify about certification days: The NYSDOL assigns specific certification days to manage system load. While you're supposed to certify on your assigned day, the system technically allows certification throughout the week. However, certifying on the wrong day can sometimes trigger additional review flags. Regarding the ID.me verification - this is part of NYSDOL's 2025 enhanced identity verification program. You'll need: 1. A valid government-issued photo ID 2. Social Security Number 3. Access to your email and phone for verification codes 4. Possibly a video selfie or live video chat Complete this ASAP as there's often a processing delay even after verification is complete. If you encounter any technical issues with ID.me, you can contact their support directly rather than waiting for NYSDOL.

•This is really helpful! I didn't realize I might need to do a video selfie or chat. Will have to make myself presentable first lol. Do you know how long the processing delay usually is after verification?

•Processing times vary, but typically it takes 2-3 business days for ID.me to verify your identity and communicate that to NYSDOL. Then NYSDOL needs 1-2 additional business days to update your claim status. So about 3-5 business days total in most cases, though it can take longer during peak periods.

•Thanks! I'm hoping it's just a weird system thing and not a bigger problem.

I went through the exact same thing in January! The certification confusion AND the ID.me verification letter all at once. Try not to stress too much about the certification - I certified on Monday instead of Thursday and still got paid, just a day later than usual. For the ID.me verification, I struggled for hours trying to get through their system. Their website kept crashing during the facial recognition step. After trying for THREE DAYS, I was so frustrated I couldn't get anyone on the phone at NYSDOL. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent. They got me connected in about 20 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own. The agent was able to put a note on my account about the ID.me technical issues and give me a direct number for ID.me support. Check out their video demo if you're curious how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Hope this helps! Don't let the verification deadline pass - that's the most important thing right now.

•Thanks for sharing your experience! It's good to hear someone went through the same thing and it worked out. I'm going to try the ID.me process now, but if I run into issues I might try that Claimyr service you mentioned. Did you have to do a video call with ID.me or just the facial recognition?

•I ended up having to do both! First the facial recognition where you move your head around, and then because something flagged in their system (probably because I was using an older phone), I had to do a video call with a representative. They just asked me to show my ID and confirm some information. The video call was actually pretty quick - about 5 minutes - once I finally got connected. The wait time was about 40 minutes though.

When I had to do ID.me last year, it was actualy kinda easy. But my sister couldnt get it to work at all on her phone, she had to use a laptop. So maybe try different device if it gets stuck?? Also they asked for my electric bill as proof of address so maybe have some bills ready just in case.

•That's good advice about trying a different device! I'll start with my phone but have my laptop ready as backup. And I'll grab a recent utility bill too. Thanks!

Just to follow up on the certification issue - the NYSDOL online system has been updated in 2025 to be more flexible about certification days, but the guidance documents and some representatives haven't fully caught up with these changes. This is likely why you received conflicting information. If you certified online and received a confirmation number, you should be fine. The system will record your certification for the correct benefit week regardless of which day you certified.

•I did get a confirmation number, so that's reassuring! I just completed the ID.me verification too - it took about 30 minutes total but seems to have gone through. Now I guess I just wait for everything to process. Thanks for all your help!
