Missed my NY unemployment interview and benefits stopped - how long to restart?
So I completely forgot about a scheduled interview with the Department of Labor last Thursday. I was busy job hunting and it just slipped my mind. My benefits stopped immediately after that missed appointment. I called them yesterday and finally got through to a representative who was surprisingly understanding. She told me my benefits would be reactivated since I had a valid reason (I was at a job interview that ran long). She said the payments would restart soon but didn't give me any specific timeframe. Has anyone else missed an appointment and then had their benefits restarted? How long did it take before you started receiving payments again? I'm getting really anxious because rent is due next week and I'm counting on this money.

I had the exact same thing happen back in May. I missed the interview because my phone died and I didn't get the notification. It took about 2 weeks for my payments to start again after I explained the situation. Keep certifying each week even though you're not getting paid yet!

•Thanks for the info! Two weeks is a long wait but at least I know what to expect now. Did you have to do anything special to get it restarted or just wait?

•Nope, just had to wait. The system is soooo slow. Make sure you keep certifying every week though!

After struggling for WEEKS to reach someone about my missed interview, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a live agent. Within 10 minutes of talking to them, my benefits were back on. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent and totally worth it to get my benefits flowing again. Check out this video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•This sounds like an ad lol. Does this actually work? I've been trying to reach them for days

•Not an ad I swear 😂 I was super skeptical too but it honestly worked. I tried calling like 30 times before finding this. Talking to the agent got my money flowing again after 3 weeks of nothing

•another one of these 'miracle solutions'... what's the actual catch here? nobody just helps people deal with unemployment out of the goodness of their heart 🤔

•The catch is that it's not free, but talking to a real human who fixed my claim in minutes was worth every penny. Better than losing weeks of benefits because you can't get through!

•100% sure. I was at my wits end after trying for 2 weeks straight. claimyr.com got me through in less than 2 hours.

Took me about 9-10 days to start getting payments again. I think it depends on how backed up they are and if you have a straightforward case. Just keep certifying and be patient.

The DOL is a complete joke. I missed an appointment because THEY scheduled it during my kid's graduation which I told them about twice. Still took 3 weeks to restart my benefits. The system is designed to make people give up.

•THIS!!! They do it on purpose to save $$$. If half the people give up, thats half the money they dont have to pay out 🤡

•Exactly! And try explaining to your landlord that you can't pay rent because some government worker didn't hit the right button yet 🙄

Ok heres my detailed breakdown of what happened when I missed MY interview with NY unemployment: Day 1: Missed interview (my bad, was in the hospital) Day 2-5: Called constantly, couldn't get through Day 6: Finally spoke to someone who said "we'll fix it" Day 10: Still no payment, called again Day 12: Different agent said first agent didn't document anything 🤦♂️ Day 14: They "escalated" my case Day 17: Got a backpay deposit for everything I was owed So for me it was about 2.5 weeks total. The system is broken AF but they will eventually pay you what you're owed. Document EVERYTHING - get names, confirmation numbers, etc.

•No prob! And yeah definitely get the name of everyone you talk to. I write down time, date, name and what they told me every single time now.

This is my THIRD time dealing with this exact situation in the last 6 months. Their notification system is garbage. Here's what you need to know: First, keep certifying every week no matter what - this is CRUCIAL. Even if you're not getting paid, you need to maintain your claim activity. If you miss certification weeks during this problem period, you'll have an even bigger headache. Second, the timeframe varies wildly. I've had it take as little as 4 days and as long as 21 days. It depends on who you talked to, how they documented your case, and pure luck. Third, if it's been more than 10 business days, call them back. When you do, use claimyr.com to avoid the hold times. I spent 3+ hours on hold before discovering this service and it's been a game changer. You'll get an agent who can actually check your claim status. Fourth, ask specifically if there are any "blocks" or "holds" on your account. Sometimes the agent will say everything is fine when there's actually still an issue preventing payment. Fifth, if you're really desperate and it's been over 2 weeks, contact your state representative's office. They can sometimes escalate claims faster than you can through normal channels. Hope this helps! The system is designed to be frustrating but stay persistent.

•Thank you SO much for this detailed advice! I'll definitely try calling again after 10 days if nothing happens. And great tip about asking specifically about blocks - I wouldn't have thought of that.

•It absolutely does work! I got my claim fixed in 3 days after my rep's office called them. Don't be so cynical - some government workers actually do care about helping people.

My roommate had this happen and it took like a month to fix because there was a "system flag" that the first agent didn't clear properly. If it's been more than 2 weeks CALL AGAIN don't just wait.

honestly depends on ur luck with which worker u get. some r super helpful and fix it right away, others dont do jack and ur screwed. i got lucky and mine took 4 days to fix.

•Facts. I've had it both ways. First time, agent fixed it while I was on the phone. Second time it took 3 weeks and multiple calls.

Wait did you already explain to them why you missed it? Because if not, you might need to submit an official excuse or they'll just keep it pending forever.

•Yes, I explained it to the lady on the phone that I was at a job interview. She said that was a valid reason and she would make a note on my account. Should I also submit something in writing?

•If she said it was fine then you're probably good. But I always send an email too just to have a paper trail. Can't hurt to have documentation.

Have you tried logging into your account online? Sometimes the payment status will show a pending date even if the agent doesn't tell you.

I'm in almost the exact same boat right now! Missed my interview last week because I was at a doctor's appointment that ran way over. Finally got through to someone yesterday who said they'd restart my benefits, but like you, no specific timeline. Reading through these comments is both reassuring and terrifying - sounds like it could be anywhere from a few days to a month depending on luck of the draw. Really hoping we both get our payments back soon because this stress is killing me. Keep us posted on how long yours takes!

•Oh wow, we're like twins in this situation! 😅 It's oddly comforting to know I'm not the only one dealing with this stress right now. A doctor's appointment running over is totally valid too - these things happen! I'm definitely going to follow the advice from @CaptainAwesome and keep detailed notes of everyone I talk to. Will for sure update this thread once I hear something. Fingers crossed we both get good news soon! 🤞

I went through this same nightmare about 3 months ago. Missed my interview because of a family emergency and my benefits got cut off immediately. The whole process to get them restarted was incredibly stressful, especially when you're already dealing with financial pressure. In my case, it took exactly 12 days from when I spoke to the representative until I saw the payment hit my account. What really helped me was calling back after a week to confirm they had processed everything correctly - turns out the first agent had made a note but hadn't actually submitted the form to restart my claim! So definitely follow up if you don't see movement within 7-10 days. Also, make sure you're still certifying every week during this period even though you're not getting paid - that was crucial for me to avoid additional delays. Hang in there, the system is frustrating but you will get your back pay once it's resolved.

•Thank you for sharing your experience! 12 days feels like forever when you're waiting for money you desperately need, but it's helpful to have a realistic timeline. The tip about following up after a week is really smart - I never would have thought that the first agent might not have actually submitted the form properly. Definitely going to call back next week if I don't see any movement. It's reassuring to know that others have gotten through this and received their back pay eventually, even though the process is so stressful.

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - missed my interview two weeks ago because I had to rush my mom to the ER. Finally got through to someone last Friday who said they'd reactivate my benefits, but it's been radio silence since then. Reading through everyone's experiences here is both helpful and nerve-wracking! Sounds like the timeline really varies depending on which agent you get and whether they actually process everything correctly the first time. I'm definitely going to follow the advice about calling back after 10 days if nothing happens, and keeping detailed records of every conversation. The stress of not knowing when the money will come through is almost worse than not having it in the first place. Thanks for posting this question @Zoe - it's comforting to know we're not alone in dealing with this broken system!

•I'm so sorry to hear about your mom - I hope she's doing better now! That's definitely a completely valid reason for missing the interview. Two weeks of silence after they said they'd reactivate is really frustrating though. Based on what everyone else is saying here, it might be worth calling them back soon since you're already at the 2-week mark. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of us dealing with this mess right now. It really does help to know we're not the only ones struggling with this system! 🙏

This whole thread is so helpful - I'm in a very similar situation right now! Missed my interview 8 days ago because of a childcare emergency (my babysitter cancelled last minute and I couldn't bring my 3-year-old to the appointment). Finally got through to someone on Monday who seemed understanding and said they'd restart my benefits, but like everyone else here, no specific timeline given. The anxiety of waiting is brutal, especially with bills piling up. Based on what I'm reading here, it sounds like I should expect anywhere from a few more days to potentially 2-3 weeks. I'm definitely going to take the advice about keeping detailed notes and following up if I don't see movement by next week. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences - it helps to know this is a common issue and that people do eventually get their payments restored, even if the system is frustratingly slow!

•Ugh, a childcare emergency is totally understandable - I can't imagine trying to bring a 3-year-old to one of those interviews! 8 days in feels like you're right in that waiting zone where it could go either way. From what I'm seeing in this thread, some people get lucky and see movement around the 7-10 day mark, while others have to wait weeks. The not knowing is definitely the worst part. I'd say if you don't see anything by early next week (around the 2-week mark), definitely call back to make sure they actually processed everything correctly. Seems like that's a common issue based on what others have shared. Hang in there - sounds like most people do eventually get their back pay even if the timeline is unpredictable!

I missed my interview about 6 weeks ago due to a work emergency (I'm a nurse and had to cover an unexpected shift). The whole experience was such a nightmare! It took me 3 weeks to get my benefits restarted, but what made it worse was that I didn't know about keeping up with weekly certifications during the gap. I missed 2 weeks of certifying while waiting for it to get fixed, which created a whole NEW set of problems that took another 2 weeks to resolve. So my biggest advice is what others have said - KEEP CERTIFYING every single week even if you're not getting paid! Also, don't be afraid to call multiple times if it's taking longer than 2 weeks. I talked to 4 different agents and got 4 different answers before finally getting someone who actually knew what they were doing. The system is definitely broken but persistence pays off. You'll get through this! 💪

•Wow, 6 weeks total sounds absolutely exhausting! As a nurse you're literally saving lives and they still give you grief over missing one appointment - the system really doesn't account for essential workers at all. The tip about missing certifications creating a whole separate problem is so important - I almost made that mistake myself thinking "what's the point if I'm not getting paid anyway." Thanks for emphasizing that! It's crazy that you had to talk to 4 different agents to find one who knew what they were doing. Really shows how inconsistent their training must be. Appreciate you sharing your experience and the encouragement - definitely helps to hear from someone who made it through the whole ordeal! 🙏

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! Missed my interview 5 days ago because I had a family emergency (my dad was hospitalized). I managed to get through to someone yesterday who said they understood and would reactivate my benefits, but reading through all these experiences has me both hopeful and anxious. It's wild how much the timeline varies - anywhere from 4 days to a month depending on which agent you get and whether they actually process everything correctly! I'm definitely going to follow the advice here about keeping detailed notes of every conversation and following up if I don't see movement by next week. The stress of not knowing when the money will come through while bills are due is just overwhelming. Thanks for posting this @Zoe - it's really comforting to see I'm not the only one dealing with this mess and that people do eventually get their payments restored, even if the system is frustratingly unpredictable!

•I'm so sorry to hear about your dad being hospitalized - I hope he's recovering well! A family medical emergency is absolutely a valid reason for missing the interview. 5 days in is still pretty early based on what everyone's sharing here, so try not to stress too much yet. It sounds like you did everything right by getting through to someone quickly and explaining the situation. I'd say give it another week or so before following up, but definitely keep certifying in the meantime! The waiting is the absolute worst part, but from what I'm seeing in this thread, most people do get their benefits restored eventually even if the timeline is all over the place. Hang in there! 💙

I'm in almost the exact same situation! Missed my interview last Tuesday because I had to take my elderly neighbor to the emergency room - she didn't have anyone else to help her. Finally got through to someone at the DOL yesterday after calling literally 40+ times over the past few days. The agent was actually really understanding about the situation and said my benefits would be restarted, but like you, didn't give me any specific timeframe. Reading through all these comments is both reassuring and terrifying - sounds like it could be anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on pure luck! I'm definitely going to take everyone's advice here about keeping detailed records and following up if nothing happens by next week. The not knowing when the money will come through while rent and bills are piling up is honestly making me lose sleep. Thanks so much for posting this question - it's such a relief to know I'm not the only one dealing with this stressful situation right now! 🙏

•Oh wow, helping your elderly neighbor get to the ER is such a kind thing to do - that's definitely an emergency situation that anyone would understand! It sounds like you're right at the beginning of this waiting game, so try not to panic yet. Based on all the experiences people are sharing here, it seems like the first 1-2 weeks are the hardest because you just don't know what to expect. I'm in a similar boat (missed mine 3 days ago due to a job interview running long) and reading through everyone's stories is helping me set realistic expectations. The 40+ calls just to get through is absolutely insane though - the whole system really needs to be overhauled! Fingers crossed we both get good news soon. Keep us posted on how it goes! 🤞

I'm dealing with this exact same nightmare right now! Missed my interview 10 days ago because my car broke down on the way there and I couldn't get through to reschedule in time. Finally spoke to an agent 3 days ago who said she'd restart my benefits, but still nothing showing up in my account. The waiting is absolutely killing me - I've got rent due in 5 days and I'm starting to panic. Reading through everyone's experiences here is both helpful and stressful because the timeline seems to be all over the place! Some people get lucky with 4-5 days, others are waiting weeks. I'm definitely going to follow the advice about calling back after 10 business days if nothing happens, and keeping detailed notes of every conversation. Has anyone had success with that Claimyr service mentioned earlier? I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point. Thanks for posting this @Zoe - it's weirdly comforting to know I'm not alone in this bureaucratic hell! 😭
