Missed certifying UI benefits due to depression/ADHD. How to backdate claims?
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle and could use some advice. I've been dealing with depression and ADHD, which made it really hard for me to consistently certify for unemployment benefits. The thing is, I was still actively looking for work during this time, but I missed claiming some weeks. Now I'm trying to figure out how to backdate my claims for those missing weeks. Has anyone been in a similar situation or know how to approach this with the unemployment office? I'm worried they won't understand my mental health struggles.

I feel you, OP. Mental health issues can really throw a wrench in the works when it comes to dealing with bureaucracy. Have you tried calling the unemployment office to explain your situation? They might be more understanding than you think.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm honestly kinda nervous about calling them. Any tips on what exactly I should say?

Just be honest about your situation. Explain that you were dealing with depression and ADHD, which made it difficult to keep up with the certifications. Emphasize that you were still actively job searching during this time. They might ask for some documentation, so be prepared for that.

Yeah, honesty is the best policy here. I've found that most of the people working at the unemployment office are pretty understanding if you explain your situation clearly.

Ugh, the unemployment system is such a mess. It's like they don't even consider that people might be dealing with mental health issues. 🙄 Good luck, OP. You're gonna need it.

I was in a similar boat last year. Depression hit me hard and I missed a few weeks of certifying. Here's what worked for me: 1. I called the unemployment office and explained my situation 2. They asked me to provide a letter from my therapist confirming my diagnosis and treatment 3. I had to fill out some backdating request forms 4. It took a few weeks, but they eventually approved my backdated claims Just be persistent and don't give up! It's your money and you deserve it.

Wow, thank you so much for sharing your experience! This is really helpful. Did you have any trouble getting the letter from your therapist?

Not at all! My therapist was happy to help. Just make sure to give them a heads up about what you need the letter for, so they can include all the relevant info.

have you tried using the online portal to backdate your claims? sometimes its easier than dealing with a person on the phone

I didn't even know that was an option! I'll definitely look into it. Thanks for the tip!

Be careful with the online portal tho. I tried using it and it glitched out on me. Ended up having to call anyway 🙄

Listen up, because I've been through this rodeo before and I know how to get it done. Here's the deal: 1. Document everything. Write down the dates you missed and why. 2. Get a letter from your doctor or therapist explaining your condition and how it affected your ability to certify. 3. Call the unemployment office early in the morning - like right when they open. You'll have better luck getting through. 4. Be polite but firm. Explain your situation clearly and ask about the process for backdating claims. 5. If the first person you talk to isn't helpful, don't be afraid to call back and try again. Sometimes you just need to get the right person. 6. Follow up regularly. These things can take time, so stay on top of it. 7. If all else fails, contact your local state representative's office. They can sometimes help push things through. Remember, you're not alone in this. The system is tough, but you've got this! 💪

Hey guys, I found a method to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Check out this video for more info: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Sounds kinda sketchy. Is it legit?

Totally legit! I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

How exactly does it work? Do you have to give them your personal info?

Nah, you just put in your phone number and they call you when they get an agent on the line. Super simple and secure.

unpopular opinion: maybe if you cant even handle filing for unemployment regularly, you're not ready to have a job? 🤷♂️

Dude, that's harsh. Mental health struggles are real and don't necessarily mean someone can't work. Have some compassion.

Has anyone else noticed that the unemployment website is always down for "maintenance" when you actually need to use it? 🙄 It's like they're trying to make this as difficult as possible.

omg yes! I swear they do it on purpose to discourage people from claiming 🤬

Pro tip: try accessing the site late at night or early in the morning. It's usually less busy then.
